If you are a nature lover who is also interested in a cultural experience, this is for you!
We offer our cabina and new studio apartment, both hand-crafted with care and creativity, nestled against the forest above the creek. We hope that you enjoy the tranquility of our tiny neighborhood just outside of town and revel in its rich natural and cultural diversity. Your closest neighbors will include mostly the furred and feathered type. Right from bed, you can be dazzled by the presence of frequent visitors at your window--our resident sloth, long-tailed manakin, squirrel cuckoo, blue-crowned motmot and more! If you forget your alarm clock, don't fret! Our resident rooster will give you a wake-up call at the perfect moment for a birding walk in our back forest.
If you are interested in human interaction, you could also learn about traditional Costa Rican agriculture from our neighbor Rodolfo,or visit with any or all of the members of our bilingual family across the yard. We are passionate about sharing our love for our community and the magic of our natural setting. Beth can provide a special perspective as a Canadian teacher who found her true home here, and Manolo offers the life-long connection as well as guided naturalist tours of the surrounding areas. Nati and Amaro, at 14 and 10, round out the picture as they gracefully dance between worlds.
Both homes are completely furnished with the major appliances, hot water, internet access and the extra bonus of artistic features like hand-painted tiles, hardwood floors, and local artwork.
Santa Elena/Monteverde includes a wide range of smaller communites that lie along the border between the provinces of Puntarenas and Guanacaste. We are situated on the top of a mountain in the Tilaran mountain range with views of Arenal Volcano from afar. It is about a 3 hour drive as you wind your way up from the international highway, with spectacular views of the San Luis valley below along the route. You can travel here through Las Juntas or Sardinal. Escape the heat of the lowlands as you climb into our green mountain home!
Monteverde is most famous for its cloud forest, left as a watershed by the original Costa Rican and Quaker residents. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of attractions, including much for the ecologically minded tourist with options for both education and adventure. Enjoy a guided day or night tour of many trail systems with a local naturalist, visit the Butterfly Garden, Bat Museum, or Frog Pond, whiz through a zipline canopy tour, or search out local artists at their galleries. . Music lovers can choose from the weekly concerts of the Monteverde Music Festival that enhance the ambiance for a 2 month period starting in January with professional Costa Rican musicians, or the Saturday night square dance at the Friends school and latin dancing in Santa Elena which are year-round events. . Monteverde is the perfect site both for nature lovers and those interested in rich cultural diversity.

Interaction with Guests
We leave this up to our guests--some people like to weave themselves right into our family rhythms and others prefer more privacy and independence. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone who has stayed with us, no matter their style of being.
We live in a rural neighborhood--Costa Rican neighbors on one side and forest/creek on the other. We offer an off the beaten track feel, but not too far out of town and access to tourist attractions. Great birding right outside your door!

Other Things to Note
To confirm, the cabina can fit up to 6 people, but for extra space and comfort, we recommend combining the apartment and the cabina for large groups! For a couple, check out our listing for the apartment alone--Monteverde Forest Hideaway--Casa Libelula.
No smoking, no inside pets, no parties. We offer and appreciate a family atmosphere
We had a lovely time at Beth's and Manolo's Hideaway. Beth was incredibly welcoming and resourceful and knew everything about the area. She even spotted a sloth just outside of our place at night for us. The place has everything one could want and everything worked well. All in all a very pleasurable and relaxing stay. Highly recommended.
The home was lovely and exceeded our expectations. Beth and Manolo went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. We learned about the cloud forest, the ecology -- but were extremely pleased to hear from Manolo about what life was like in Montverde as a child -- and from Beth about the early settlement of the area by the Quakers. Beth checked in with us morning and night, offered tips and suggestions about things to do and see and where to shop and what to buy. There was a freshly baked cake in the oven waiting for us when we arrived. This was our first international trip with our two boys, aged 11 and 13 -- and she made all of us feel comfortable.
We hired Manolo to guide us through the cloud forest and we saw much more, and learned much more, than we ever would have done on our own -- including a pair of Quetzals! We saw Toucans and a sloth from our balcony.
When we rated our trip, our stay with Beth consistently rates near the top of the list. Thank you Beth and Manolo!
I couldn't recommend staying at Beth's Forest Hideaway more! Her and her husband are such kind and fun people. There was fresh bread, fruit and juice waiting for us upon arrival. The home was built by her husband and the pictures don't quite do it justice. I stayed with two other friends here, and they loved the butterfly tiles in the bathroom. Beth and her husband Manolo were wonderful hosts. They helped us set up nearly every activity we did. We even did a couple tours with Manolo who is so knowledgeable and passionate about Monteverde. We came back being able to share so much more about Costa Rica with our friends, and we were able to see so much more by having Manolo as a guide! And by the end of our stay I felt like I would really miss these people. There is a sloth who can sometimes be spotted right from the bedroom or patio windows. The home feels very safe and secure. We walked into town everyday. The first time in feels like a bit of a hike, but the route seemed faster each time. I loved having my coffee in the hammock chair, soaking in the beauty of the area. A nice spot to self reflect. The home is equipped with everything you'd need, we made a few meals here, but I do recommend bringing headlamps if you enjoy walking home at night vs a taxi.
Our hosts both made us feel incredibly welcome, from the warm bread in the oven, to the warm hugs from Beth. They were so helpful with answering our questions to Manolo's guides through the Cloud Forest and a lovely night tour where we saw birds, tarantula tucked in his nest, and an armadillo! We loved our stay and the welcoming sloth in the tree out our window!
My girlfriend and I had an absolutely superb time at Beth and Manolo's Monteverde Forest Hideaway. It is the perfect combination of retreating to nature, "getting away from it all," yet still having all of the basic necessities of practical and comfortable living right at your fingertips (and for an astonishingly good price!). The beds are comfy, the kitchen, dining area, and bathrooms, are perfect sized and very charming (with all the necessary appliances), and the view from our room was spectacular. Nature lovers especially will enjoy this wonderful opportunity. To put the fantastic wildlife and nature aspects into perspective, we didn't have to walk more than 10 feet out of our door to see emerald toucanets, magneta-throated woodstar hummingbirds, numerous species of butterfly, great-tailed grackles, great kiskadees, white-fronted parrots, orioles, and even a mother two-toed sloth and her still-nursing baby right in our front yard! Beth is friendly, helpful, and is there for you if you want guidance and also knows how to give you your independence so that you can carve out your own adventure. By the way, DEFINITELY take Manolo up on his offers for his guided tours of the marvelous Cloud Forest Reserve and the equally thrilling nocturnal hikes in the montane transitional forest nearby. Staying at this location made us want to return to Costa Rica, but it's hard to imagine a better place to stay than Beth's Monteverde Forest Hideaway. If you're after excellent accommodations, seclusion, adventure, comfort, helpfulness, value, and nature, this place is a must. Five stars all around. It's the best AirBnB option in the entire country.
Beth and Manolo were exceptional hosts. We were welcomed with homemade pumpkin bread, a bowl of fruit and juice. They were generous with their time: in helping us plan our itinerary, arranging tours, including a private tour of the CiriCancha Reserve where we had a rare sighting of the resplendent queztal. They gave us lifts to town and even managed to have the artist drop off signed original works before we left at 7 in the morning! We loved every magical moment in Monteverde.

We are a bi-cultural family who is passionate about sharing the magic of the place we call home. We strive to live as naturally and locally based as possible. Nati and Beth love music and Amaro and Manolo live for soccer. We all love to eat, though we don't always agree on what should be on the menu.
