About this listing
Welcome to our ranch style home in SE Portland just South of Mt. Tabor. This is a 1400 sq ft basement space. It's ideal for summer time, since it always stays cool. There's lots of space but it's a unique mix of form and function, not traditional.
Welcome to a sanctuary during your travels.
This is a large (1400 sq ft) basement space.
There are 2 huge bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom. No living room or dining room.
You are renting one of the 2 bedrooms. It is actually 2 rooms: the bedroom is 12'x12'. It has a pillow topped full size bed, and a closet for clothes.
Adjacent to it is a private study (12'x16'), with a carpeted floor, and a zen table with zafus (cushions) for sitting. If you need more traditional sitting let us know, and we can put a Western style desk and chair in the space.
The home is on a quiet tree lined street just South of Mt. Tabor, with a beautiful huge Blue Sequoia tree, a pear tree, and a gingko tree in the backyard.
Super high speed Internet (up to 30 mbps) allows you to stay in touch with friends and check your email. Or conduct business.
Bus lines to downtown Portland are just minutes away. The buses run every 15 minutes. It's about 30 minutes to downtown.
Beautiful Mt. Tabor Park is 2 minutes away by car. It's a 40 minute walk from the house to the top of Mt. Tabor and back at a moderate pace.
There are gorgeous views of Mt. Hood and the city. The park is laced with beautiful reservoirs.
There are free summer concerts on Tuesday nights. There's a picnic area, bicycling, and a playground. As well as a few dog parks.
The design of the home is Asian influenced, with statuary from Bali, India, and Vietnam.
The house has 5 bedrooms. There are 3 upstairs, and2 downstairs.
There is a small office in the basement where the owner runs his business. From 9:30 am to 2 pm Monday through Friday, there are one to 3 other people either in the office and/or the garage.
Non smoking household. If you want to listen to loud music or have a party-like atmosphere, this is not the setting for you.
This is a daylight basement. The good news is that it is always cool during the summer. The bad news is that it only has a daylight basement window. It is well lit, and we have SAD lights available on request.
The hot tub that may appear in the backyard photos is not working as of July 2014.
Yoga mats available.
There are plenty of places for running nearby, on school tracks, jogging trails and in the parks.
Bicycling is popular in Portland. Maps of bike streets available are in your room. There's a carport to put your bike(s) in while you are here. There are stores where you can rent bikes by the hour, day, or week.
Owner is a Massage Therapist, massages available on premises upon request if there are openings in his schedule. $65 an hour.
John also has a lot of discount coupons available, including savings of up to 60% in over 64 restaurants nearby. Just ask.
You have the 2 rooms in the suite, access to the kitchenette, and a shared bathroom.
Interaction with Guests
I love to chat, but I don't have a lot of extended time to go places.
Beautiful tree lined street, 40 minute walk to the top of Mt. Tabor and back.
Local restaurants within walking distance, from pizza to Thai to Pho. There's a sports bar nearby.
Buses on Division and Powell, run every 15 minutes.
Bicycle paths all over.
We have car2go in Portland, which is a car share program that works great. There is also zipcar, a similar system.
Other Things to Note
There are two cats that live on the premises. They come and go through the basement.
Please read the welcome sheet in the kitchen when you arrive. You should also receive and email with directions and how to get in the house and the contact person.
Non Smoking House. No shoes. If you use the kitchen, you have to leave it clean, ie, everything put away and all dishes washed and at least in the dish rack.
Quiet house, so if you use a cell phone or computer programs or anything that produces noise, please have a head set. When you leave, please put all linens, towels, anything that needs to be cleaned at the foot of the bed.
If you have any concerns, make sure you communicate them to the person listed on the welcome sheet.
Doing laundry- just leave $10 per load. That includes detergent.
John was getting new photos of the basement room taken for airbnb while I was there, but don't let that fool you. This place is pretty bad. It smells like cat pee. The shower is either cold with water pressure or hot with no pressure. The basement room is fine and very dark but there is clutter everywhere else (watermelon/toolbox/dishes in hallway and food storage on top of laundry machine). Upstairs house is also rented out separately, so be prepared to hear footsteps overhead. It is not a good place to get work done because there is only a low coffee table. Also the hot tub shown in the home photos doesn't work and hasn't for quite some time. And all the patio chairs are falling apart. And if you use more than one appliance at the same time the circuit blows out. I guess you get what you pay for, but this was by far the worst airbnb place I've stayed.
Wow, thanks for being so forthright. You certainly had me fooled. I thought everything was going fine. I'm amazed at how pleasant and friendly you can be and not let me know how things are going for you. Especially since i went out of my way to check in with you regularly.
I just had 2 of my office staff go in to those rooms and they don't smell anything. And they were both shocked at your review. You seemed so pleasant and content the whole time you were here.
I've had dozens of folks stay in that space and be very happy. Since you've only stayed in about 3 airbnb places, i have a feeling you may be spoiled. I've been on airbnb since they opened, staying at dozens of places around the world. I know what bad and worse looks like. And it's nothing like here.
i'm really concerned about the cat pee smell. I wish you would have said something. I will have a professional cleaner come in, even though none of us notice any cat pee odors. I have to think you have an acute awareness of odors that we don't possess.
i bought cushions for all the patio furniture while you were here. The seats have very firm supports so there shouldn't be any issues.
It clearly states in the description that there is no hot tub. I'm sorry you didn't see that.
Your arrival after midnight was something i gladly arranged my night around, thank you. You broke the rules by having someone stay here; I was very easygoing about that, even though your friend left dishes in the sink and was here for 2 days. I'm glad that your friend appreciated his stay and you were so happy to have him around.
I appreciate your feedback on the clutter. You were here for an extended stay, i wish you would have said something when i asked how things were going. The clutter could have easily been moved. The room you were in is huge, very clean and plenty of space. The description clearly states it's a zen room. i will make sure i make that more clear. That table and the zafus (pillows) are all very expensive and of the highest quality available. We do have regular office chairs available and i will think about putting a regular desk in there. I will make sure to ask each guest. So far, most folks like having extra space.
I'm glad you got to take advantage of the plush yoga mat and the foam roller that i made available to you at no charge. i'm glad you had space in your room to be able to do those practices.
As for footsteps upstairs, the upstairs is a no shoes space. But yes, it is sometimes a drag hearing footsteps. That comes with being downstairs.
I replaced the shower head with an expensive new one as soon as you mentioned the problem. I stopped everything and attended to that before you returned that evening. And as i told you, i made an appointment with the plumber to come out and see if anything else can be done. Thank you for appreciating how i take my hosting responsibilities very seriously.
I just had that kitchen put in downstairs. Congratulations on figuring a way to use so many items that the circuit blew. No one else has managed to accomplish that feat.
Thank you so much for your feedback. It would have been better put in a message directly to me. As anyone can see from my reviews, i have a fantastic reputation and have been commended by other hosts who have visited her; see my reviews. I take all feedback seriously, and anyone reading this can be assured that all these issues were addressed immediately.
If anyone has the same issues and lets me know and i don't fix them within 24 hours, your stay is free.
John is a wonderful host. Fully attentive and fun! I attended a bbq potluck the night of my stay and his friends are a delight: musicians, dancers, interesting conversation. The house is welcoming and accommodating and I loved the binder full of suggestions and helpful tips around Portland, something I look forward to adding to my listings. Thank you, John!
The host is a really fine person, but the experience differed greatly from what we were led to expect by both the description and photos. It's a very dark bedroom and studio room in a cluttered basement. The comfort, privacy and noise levels are more akin to a hostel situation.
John was nice as well as flexible even for my late arrival. The basement room was spacious and comfortable.
We had some trouble getting to Portland, but once we did, John had left a note for us to call him. He left keys for us and gave me a phone tour of the house. Our basement room was clean and spacious, but I would have preferred a room with windows and fresh air for the cost. John seems like a gracious host. His backyard is lovely and is located in the great SE neighborhood of PDX.
John's house is in a lovely neighborhood. His space is comfortable and private. He is a warm and efficient host.
Stayed in the basement room, wow, super conductive to sleeping, dark and very quiet. Close to Mount Tabor park which is great for hill running. While a bit "off the path" still easy to reach lots of the SE neighborhoods especially along Division and Powell. Bathroom is clean and very private.
