The Space

Enjoy this truly stunning and romantic home. Built in 1885, the mansion has 9 working fireplaces with impressive original mantels in mahogany, cherry, lace and birch wood. Also features eight stunning stained glass windows and beautiful architectural details. The Dearing Mansion is a splendid place to relax and discover. Guests may enjoy the main floor living room, music parlor with grand piano, reading room, dining room, kitchen, outdoor deck with downtown views and relaxing sauna.

Guest Access

Conveniently located 5 minutes from downtown Saint Paul and a 10 minute drive from the airport, Dearing Mansion in West Saint Paul is just over the High Street Bridge across the Mississippi River.

Interaction with Guests

I enjoy interacting with guests and I respect people's privacy. This home has a variety of room options available and as such, operates much like a traditional bed and breakfast with shared common spaces. There may be several guests at one time, providing an opportunity to meet a variety of people. The home is quite large with many beautiful spaces for all to enjoy on the main floor. Private bedrooms with either shared or private bath (master suite) are located on the 2nd floor. I ask that guests be respectful of each other at Dearing Mansion. Because of the historic nature of the home and the shared aspect, it is well suited for adults (older children may be considered).

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is friendly and safe. There are beautiful parks and great trails nearby for walking and bicycling. Great coffee shops and bakeries are within walking or driving distance along with antique shops and other shopping 5-10 minutes away by car. Historic Summit Avenue as well as Grand Avenue, known for shopping, fine restaurants and eateries, are just 5 minutes by car. I am happy to provide restaurant and entertainment recommendations. Also close to Xcel Energy Center, Fitzgerald Theatre, local colleges and universities including: Macalester, St. Thomas, St. Kates. Come visit and enjoy. And like many of our guests, come back again!

Getting around

Downtown is just a 5 minute drive across the Mississippi River. City bus a block away.

  • My second stay at Dearing Mansion while in St Paul for a weekend workshop. Scott is a great host. He was easy to contact and made arrival and departure smooth. A quiet, comfortable place to return to after a long day. Unbeatable view and architectural detail to marvel at.

  • Scott is fantastic and this home is amazing. The work he has put into restoring this beautiful historic home will take your breath away. Gorgeous views, fabulous experience!!

  • Dearing Mansion has a soft, welcoming, harmonious flow through the rooms that speak to its past--preserved, renovated woodwork & ceilings--but call the visitor into more recent times. John Lennon's image by the piano, Led Zeppelin album cover framed, artwork from Asia and Africa in the breathe-easy kitchen bring the visitor up to date. I didn't meet Scott, but true to the Dearing Mansion's name, his friends Lisa and Terry were responsive and ENDEARING.

  • The Dearing Mansion is one of those AirBnB scores -- an absolute gem of a destination. I can't fathom why one would stay at a hotel after such an experience. My friend and I had a most extraordinary stay, and we only wish we could have stayed longer. Scott was an incredibly kind, warm, generous and informative host. He was available to answer all of our questions promptly (via phone, e-mail and in-person) and offer great recommendations for things to do in the area, but he also provided us with the space to have our own experience. The Mansion is Museum in its own right. Every room is fascinating and worth at least one slow, engaged stroll-through (which Scott absolutely encourages!). It houses gorgeous artifacts from all over the world, past and present: I played the piano in one room, browsed great books in another, viewed masks and Egyptian artwork in yet another, and sipped tea and had a wonderful breakfast in the nothing-shy-of-epic kitchen (and epically stocked and shared as well!). The view from the bedroom was an incredible panoramic of downtown -- hard to pull away from, both in daylight and by night. Again, a real gem. I now regard St. Paul in an even higher light because it houses such an extraordinary hidden destination. This one met and exceeded all expectations. Thanks again, Scott!

  • My grand-daughter and I stayed at the Dearing Mansion
after seeing THE WIZARD OF OZ.
It was a special night for us. The Room with a View
of St. Paul was just as I expected.
Scott was a wonderful host and the mansion has been
    beautifully restored.
I hope to return. It would be a wonderful place to hold a family
reunion next summer during The Minnesota State Fair.

  • Scott's home is a historical work of art. His welcome was pleasant and we appreciated him sharing the history of the mansion with us. The views of St. Paul were spectacular from The Room With A View and the heated bathroom floor was a treat! Would highly recommend to our friends and family!

  • Our trip to St. Louis was topped off by our stay here. The Dearing Mansion is a beautiful and history piece of mis-western culture. Scott has done an amazing job revitalizing the property and it shows. Check out the history of property by reading the newspaper clippings and photos Scott has collect. Excellent host and gorgeous house. We look forward to staying here again if we are in the area.

  • Scott was a great host. Room was very comfortable and exactly what it was reported to be. House is amazing. I was in town for family business and Scott was accomodating to my crazy schedule. I particularly enjoyed sitting on his back deck with he and friends sharing a nice fire and our personal histories and interests.

About
I am a residential remodeling contractor specializing in older homes. I live in this home part time with my 19 year old son until late August. My 21 year old other son is back from college for the summer also living with me part time. You may or may not see them. I love sharing my historic home with guests either during gala events or for a cup of coffee or tea in the kitchen or living room in front of a fire. The house is truly a treasure. It is one of the most unique homes in St. Paul. The back deck has wonderful views of St. Paul which is a 5 minute drive from Downtown St. Paul. In my spare time I love to travel, sea kayak, and lindyhop swing dance. I'm always game for a canoe trip, a great single malt scotch, a Broadway show, a home improvement project around the house involving hanging any kind of art or a good conversation. As a guest you will be welcomed, given the tour and assisted in any way I can. Photos of bedroom coming soon.
