Perfect getaway for two, private entrance, no shared walls, and street parking. Four miles to downtown, super-close to CapMetro bus lines. Backyard lounging encouraged with propane grill and propane accessories.
Your private entrance to your little South Austin getaway. Relax or dine outside at little private cafe table.
If you've ever been a fan of the animated "King of the Hill" series by Mike Judge, well, welcome to the zip code that was the inspiration for so many episodes: 78745. We are only two blocks from the more hip and trendy 78704 neighborhood you've heard so much about - but hey! Our location is fantastic, especially if you're trying to use public transportation - we're only a four minute walk to the South Congress Transit Center, where you can take a Capital Metro bus to many popular areas around Austin, and just a two minute walk to the #10 bus line that will take you downtown. Our backyard is large, and you are welcome to have friends over and lounge. There's a little "table for two" set up just outside your door, and a larger table under the tree. Move the chairs about freely - and there are more folding chairs available if you need them.
The actual space itself is perfect for two - although with the king-size bed and depending on how friendly you're feeling, it could accommodate three. No lack of hot water here with a 50 gallon water heater. Kitchen comes completely furnished, with small stove/oven, small refrigerator, microwave and toaster.
Feel the need to stretch your legs? We're within easy walking distance of a few inexpensive little eateries, a coffee house and a couple of bars. And that's not even mentioning all the places you can discover by riding Cap Metro's #10 line into downtown on South First Street (just one block away) or getting to all points of the city via the CapMetro South Congress Transit Center located two and a half blocks away.
We have two cats AND a dog! You should be animal-friendly, as the resident dog and cats are very people-friendly (also, because we're already animal abundant, we can't have any more, so please don't bring your own). The dog and cats are never allowed inside your place (and if one of the cats does come in, say "No!" and she'll run out. They KNOW your space is off-limits). BUT - if you're afraid of cats and a dog - or if you're super allergy sensitive and can't be around animals in an open air setting like a back yard, we're not the place for you.
(Note: this Airbnb rental is a registered business with the City of Austin and the State of Texas, and the rate includes the required 15% Hotel Tax.)
Our property is at the corner of Normandy Street and Richland Street. If you have a car, pull up and park on the RICHLAND STREET and enter through the side gate (you'll see a green tarp showing where it is). Motorcycles and scooters can pull up into the backyard, if you prefer.
DIRECTIONS FROM THE AIRPORT:
A cab should run you about $30-$35 with tip from the airport, and should take about 20 minutes max. A bus will cost you $2-$3 for an all-day fare and will take about an hour-and-a-half to two hours. Here are the directions to the place from the airport for you or your cabbie:
Coming from the airport (east), heading west on 71, you will pass under IH-35. When you do this, you will see an exit for South Congress Avenue. Get ready, because you are going to exit on South First Street.
Exit on South First Street, and make a LEFT, crossing over the bridge. You are going to get ready to make another LEFT turn, this time on NORMANDY STREET, which is the second street once you've cleared the major intersection. It is also the street right before the ugly yellow and red gas station called "Mucho's Imports / Major Gas Brand."
Turn LEFT on NORMANDY STREET. Our house, 415 Normandy Street, is on the right, and the first house on the second block. It is white with black shutters, and has a raked roof, with a blue fire hydrant in the corner by the street sign. We are exactly at the corner of Normandy Street and Richland Street.
Your garage apartment is on the RICHLAND STREET side. It would be easiest for you to have the cab driver make a right on Richland, and park on Richland. Enter through the side gate located under the fig tree next to the garage. Say hello to the barking dog and you can call her by name to make her stop barking (her name is Jayda, and she doesn't bite). Walk to your right along the side of the garage, and voila! There's the door, and if it is not open already, the key will be under the Welcome mat.
There's a washer and dryer inside the main house - if you'd like to wash your dainty duds while you're here, let me know - I don't mind providing a little laundry service, if you can give me a little notice.
Interaction with Guests
As for me, I work a day job, and when home in the "main house" will see you as little or as much as you like. You're welcome to stop by and say "howdy" - and I'm generally available to answer any questions you might have, but will give you as much privacy as you desire.
If you're trying to get around Austin on a budget, or if you don't want to deal with the parking downtown, remember, our location is super convenient to the Capital Metro bus lines. You can even ride the 486 Night Owl back after the bars close until the wee hours (do be sure to check the schedule first, though to know the exact pick up points).
Please, please, please - remember to keep the gate to the yard closed. Our dog, Jayda, loves to roam around the neighborhood. She's not the brightest thing. As we say here, it's a good thing she's pretty. Jayda and the cats (Lily, CT and Cabiria) are indoor/outdoor pets, and are allowed in the "big house" and the back yard. The cats know they are not supposed to be in your "little house," so you can tell them "No!" and they'll run out. Jayda won't enter without your permission and a lot of coaxing (unless, of course, you offer her food - then she'll do anything.)
Also, please be sure to turn OFF the air conditioner and lights when you leave for the day (or, if it's triple digit heat, set the thermostat at 80 degrees) The electric bills here are outrageous, so your help in keeping them under control so I can keep my rates lower is much appreciated.
Honestly, the photos of this adorable casita do not do it justice. The furniture and style within are so much lovelier in person -- adorable bathroom with quaint tiling, huge comfy carved bed, lovely wardrobe and desk. It's even better than the photos show. Jackie was the best host I've encountered. She even offered to pick me up from the airport (which should not be expected but made me feel very at home)! She literally welcomes you into her home (the big house in front of the casita) if you need anything at all. There were snacks and ingredients for cooking, making it a perfect spot if you're visiting for a longer stay and want to make some meals. But there are plenty of great taco spots and bar down the street with a great burger (even a great veggie burger). I stayed for a week long class, and it was an easy walk away, and such a relaxing place to crash at night. I'll definitely be back. Thanks for everything, Jackie!
Jackie was a wonderful host during our weekend in Austin. Just a few miles from downtown, the location was very convenient, and Jackie also provided many helpful suggestions for things to do within walking distance. The garage apartment itself was very comfortable, with several thoughtful amenities that made our stay more enjoyable. I would recommend Jackie's place to anyone looking for a convenient and cozy place to stay in Austin, TX.
Jackie was such a personable and warm host. She immediately made you feel like you were an old friend or member of the family. Her place was nice and private and felt like a nice little home. She had everything to make your stay feel comfortable. Really recommend her place if you want nice place for your own, including a small well stocked kitchen. Great for extended stays.
Jackie was very welcoming and the room was fantastic! The room was as advertised and was furnished with very cool tile designs for the counters. The bed was incredibly comfortable (I remember not wanting to leave it in the morning) and the kitchen had everything you will need to make a meal. Jackie also went out of her way to give me great and detailed recommendations on some of the best local places to eat. The neighbourhood was quiet, but also close enough to local restaurants and stores that walking was not a problem.
Jackie was fantastic! She was very helpful and alert knowledgeable about everything around us and around Austin. The place was very cozy and perfect for our weekend getaway. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for somewhere very comfortable and convenient!
Jackie made us feel very welcome, we had everything we might have ever needed in our awesome back house: beach towels, bags, snacks, you name it! It was really incredible. The house was such an awesome hideaway with great access to a bus line that takes you straight to downtown as well as the great restaurants on South 1st. We had such an amazing time here!!
The apartment is located in a quiet neighborhood close to major highways. We found the location perfect to travel further south in central texas, while still being within minutes drive of downtown. Jackie provided a lot of snacks and basic items like oils and seasonings. The entire place is well stocked throughout, including toiletry items just in case you've forgotten anything.
We spent a few rare freezing nights in austin but in this cozy spot, Jackie made sure the space stayed warm and comfortable with plenty of heaters. The bed is a luscious king-sized mattress with heavy bedding that we had trouble leaving in the morning.
We met Jackie a few times, and she gave us helpful recommendations on where to go for a bite to eat and also did our laundry at one point. She was always available if we needed anything, and we felt extremely taken care of.
Also, we couldn't help but mention Jackie's pets. Jayda, the dog, was our pal when we'd have lazy-start mornings, sitting in the sun on the patio, the cats would also join us cozying up on our laps when invited. The animals are all really friendly and extremely well-behaved, they don't come into your space without an invite so you can interact with them as much or as little as you want.
We felt very comfortable and at home and Jackie couldn't do enough for us. We will definitely look to stay here again next time we're in the area.
