About This Listing
3-bed modern well-insulated family home on 1/2acre, 20 miles Letterkenny through spectacular mountain scenery and Glenveagh National Park, famed for wild deer and golden eagles. 5 minutes from the bustling market town & golden sandy Atlantic beaches.
The sun room has a round window, double patio doors, high vaulted ceiling, solid fuel stove, and commanding views of the Derryveagh mountain range.
Poised between the mountains and the sea, this splendid area of the Donegal Gaeltacht is a 15 minute drive from Glenveagh National Park with it's castle and golden eagle colony, or under 10 minutes the other direction brings you to the spectacular Atlantic beaches of Falcarragh's Five Mile Strand and the Tory Island ferry departing from Magheroarty. Don't worry, we couldn't pronounce these names at first either!
All rooms and outbuildings apart from the office and attic which we will use as a store whilst away. Garden, swings, poly tunnel (it's nice to sit in even if you don't grow anything during your stay). Freeview TV, DVD and WiFi. There is a dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer, and stair gates can be fitted, just let me know.
Interaction with Guests
You will be welcomed whether arriving by car or plane and full information and a contact number provided. We may not be at the property during your stay but will be available to contact. We'd encourage you to share your experiences on social media during your stay and after you go, and we provide wifi in the house for your convenience.
The Gaeltacht or Irish-speaking culture flourishes here, with regular traditional music sessions in local bars, and live music entertainment at weekends. Nearby Meenaleck, Crolly, is the home to Clannad and Enya's father Leo Brennan, and the pub, Tabhairne Leo, there holds regular music sessions. Further on down the coast, The Viking House is Daniel O'Donnell's former home and centre for visitors
Buses are surprisingly good in this area although remote, with daily services to Derry, Dublin, Belfast, and Galway departing from the town. There is a card with all this info on and local taxi services. There are newly designated cycle paths surrounding the townland of Dunmore. A car is a must for longer trips out but you could stay all week and not use it. Carrickfinn airport operates Dublin and Glasgow services and transport to and fro the airport can be arranged if you wish to arrive that way.
Other Things to Note
The heating in the house is an eco-friendly solid fuel and solar system which can take a little getting used to at first but will keep you roasting warm winter and summer. There is an electric shower downstairs for convenience (updated since the pictures!) and full instructions are left together with a well-stocked fuel shed. During the summer months a little fire in the evenings will be all you need, as the solar panels will heat up the water before you even wake up.
Pets are fine except in the bedrooms and on furniture. There is half an acre of wild garden which can be closed off with gates for kids to play in away from the road. Garden use is at the guests' own responsibility.

About the Host, Alan
I'm a photographer / writer / director, trying to cut down on the number of forward slashes in my life. I love travel: I think it's so important to pass on that gift to the kids too. I've shot for Harper Collins in Kenya before, and my photography has taken me places I would otherwise have seen only on postcards. My first short film won Award of Merit in Best Shorts 2012, La Jolla, CA, and this year, 2014, I'm in pre-production for my next. I'm also studying Java programming, Databases and Systems for a postgraduate degree in Computer Science, and have a well-proportioned and secluded country house in Donegal that sleeps 9 that can be rented during the summer hols. It's set on half an acre with mountain and sea views, solid fuel and solar heating, a poly tunnel, and WiFi (of course!). Like home, because it is! Experience the wilds of Donegal and its flourishing Irish Gaeltacht culture, with all the comfort and space of home with bags of space for the kids to run wild - ours do!
