Location

Katanning, Western Australia, Australia

Katanning is in the middle of everywhere. In town the Premier Mill Hotel and the dome Café attached is a must see. It just got 3 of the 7 WA Heritage awards and has been nominated for an UNESCO world Heritage Site. The Cordial Bar downstairs there is pretty special too. The architecture of the town shows the boom days of agriculture in the first half of the last century.
If you want a nice drive there are a few options.
The Stirling Range is a bit over an hour away. Climbing bluff Knoll is a few hours to do but worth it. Take a picnic lunch to have at the peak. (It's an easy climb, just an uphill stroll for the most part).
Kojonup is 40km west and has the "Kodja Place" showing the local indigenous Noongar Heritage. Then either southwest to Frankland or south to Mt Barker and you are in some wonderful vineyards with some very magic local wines.
Or drive east. Start north to Lake Dumbleyung, then head to lake Grace and visit the Mission Hospital there and see the extensive (dry) lakes. Then south to Pingrup and look at the silo art. Then west, through Nyabing, stopping off at the new community hub for a bit to eat and a drink to wash the dust out of your throat. 60km further west and you are back in Katanning.

As much as I like travelling, I love being home in my country town. I like being able to see the stars at night.
