Phoenix in the Dunes perches on a wooded dune 700 feet from a deeded private Lake Michigan beach shared by just ten houses. A perfect vacation house: rustic charm and all modern amenities. It's part of the historic Castle Park Association. A terrific spring, summer, or fall getaway!

The space
NOTE FOR SUMMER 2021: Phoenix in the Dunes is on the market, and we're happy to supply details to anyone who wants to use their Airbnb stay as a "test drive" for a possible purchase. Followers of western Michigan real estate may recognize the house from our for-sale listing on the usual sites. We will not be doing formal showings in the summer, and we will close any sale after the season is over, so our guests can book with confidence.

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day the Phoenix is available for full weeks, Saturday to Saturday. We think we've fixed our settings so Airbnb won't allow you to book in units of less than a full week or starting on any other day, but we apologize in advance for any glitches.

Phoenix in the Dunes is a great place for large families to gather without being right on top of each other all the time. The Phoenix is also a great choice for staying away from the outside world: once your essential shopping is done, there is no need to get closer than several hundred feet to anyone not in your group, and our Internet service is very reliable for those Zoom encounters!

Gather at the big farm table for dinner (prepared in the adjoining gourmet kitchen, which has plenty of room for everyone to help!), then head to the living room for TV or video games, to the upstairs window seat with a book, or outside to lounge in a hammock or watch birds from the back deck that overlooks a wooded ravine. We have books, games, and puzzles galore, plus a highly playable Charles Walter console piano for sing-alongs or an impromptu concert.

Holland, Michigan, United States

Castle Park has eight green-clay tennis courts that offer the finest playing in Western Michigan. Bring smooth-soled tennis shoes and your racquet. The association swimming pool is open from mid-June through mid-September. We have an assortment of pool noodles, sand toys, boogie boards, and beach chairs. Bring your bike--there's great biking on the back roads around Holland and Saugatuck. If you have a kayak, you can launch it off our beach, or explore Lake Macatawa and the Kalamazoo River at several public launching places. Beach walkers can go for miles from our beach south to Saugatuck or north to Macatawa and the Big Red Lighthouse.

Our family has had a house on the site of Phoenix in the Dunes since 1960, and has ties to Castle Park dating back to the 1920s. Our original house, quaint but highly flammable, burned to the ground in 2003 due to carelessness by a power company work crew. The Phoenix that rose from the ashes, completed in 2006, is one of our favorite places in the world! Our busy lives in the Chicago area don't allow us to get there very often, and we we think the house is much happier when it's occupied, especially with people relaxing and enjoying all the fun things that Castle Park and the Holland area have to offer. As travelers we use Airbnb whenever we can and haven't been disappointed yet!
