Fantastic artist building in Pilsen, directly next door to the National Museum of Mexican Art, and Harrison Park!
The vibe of the Pilsen Art House is similar to a hostel, but with ONLY private rooms! You will have the opportunity to meet other travelers if you desire, or have as much privacy as you desire.
*** PLEASE NOTE: Lorie and Mike do not live here full time, but we have live in hosts and provide lots of helpful info and we provide mountains of advice on what to see and do in the city. **
**THE Pilsen Art House is an OLD building, with lots of quirks/(we call character and charm), but is wonderfully welcoming, safe and fun.
This listing is for a SINGLE PRIVATE ROOM, NOT the entire apartment. The common areas are shared: living room/eating area, kitchen and bathroom.
We call it the "Backpacker Special" because it's for travelers who have little luggage, and are content in a small space! This room is prices accordingly, and is suited for a single traveler. It is a VERY small space, with comfortable small bed for one, side table, lamp, and storage under the bed for your backpack. There are no windows and is wonderful for catching up on your sleep.
Its the rear bedroom on the first floor unit in an artist apartment building in Pilsen! Beautifully painted room, with tree mural, rug, side table and comfy bed.
Rich cotton linens, comforters, pillows, fluffy towels are all included in your stay.
Lightning fast internet too! woooot!
Old Czech style buidling, typical of the area from years back when the now mostly Hispanic neighborhood, was primarily Czech. The very high ceilings gives the apt a lofted appearance, large windows, small, basic kitchen and color, color, color abounds in the Pilsen Art House.
NOTE ON KEY RETURN: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RETURN KEYS....we have a deposit now on rooms to ensure that keys are returned. PLEASE do your absolute best to give the keys to a host. If keys are not returned, $10 will be deducted from the deposit held by airbnb. THANK YOU!!
Please note: this is an OLD building, which can be slightly drafty, and not having the newest amenities, however, we feel that adds to the character of the place, and it common in this older neighborhood.
We offer three floors of private rooms in the Pilsen Art House. Each floor houses an apt with three bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen/eating area and living room.
There are 9 private rooms available for rent in Pilsen Art House, accomodating single, couple, or group travelers. Each room is colorful, cozy, inviting, and very comfortable and private. Murals painted on all the walls make it fun, whimsical, and good conversation piece.
The kitchen is fully equipped with microwave, coffee maker, blender, kettle, pots, pans, dishes, etc. As our guest, you are invited to use anything you need.
The neighborhood of Pilsen, is directly west of downtown Chicago, accessible via Pink line, which is two short blocks away. It will take you to all the attractions of downtown Chicago in less than 10 minutes! Pilsen itself is an interesting, dynamic, and magnetic neighborhood in it's own rite...full of artists, murals painted on sides of buildings, coffee houses, galleries, bakeries, vintage stores, mexican candy shops, and the National Museum of Mexican Art is right next door and FREE!!!
Pilsen Art House is a short walk to 15 restaurants, (including one directly across the street, you can see if from the front window!), video store (yes, they still have them around here), Harrison Park with indoor pool, baseball field, soccer field and basketball courts,
Free wifi, easy/free parking, and two blocks to pink line!
Mike and I are very familiar with the city, and are happy to give you suggestions/advise on how to be a savvy visitor in Chicago with tips on cheap (but delicious) eats, discount days at museums, free festivals in the summer, etc.
***PLEASE NOTE: THERE ARE NO PETS AT THIS LOCATION** . We have lots of reviews for our Oak Park home that does have pets, but not in the Pilsen Art House.
The hosts very very friendly and attentive. Easy to reach from downtown. I would stay here again!
Great space, and very lovely and welcoming hosts! Perfect for the budgeted backpacker!
Above all, Nice & Hospitable Hosts welcomed me. Even though my room I chose is small, all facilities are well eqipped in this house. Its location is close to subway station 18th & Damen on Pink Line of CTA. Thus, I don't feel any inconvenience. Furthernore, they provides the room in quite a reasonable price. It will be quite helpful for the budget of travellers.
I stayed in the Backpacker-room for two nights and for the purpose of "only sleeping" the room is perfect. It is really small, but the house features a nice, colorful living-room as well as a big kitchen. Lorie was really nice and helpful. I got a lot of good tips. The neighborhood is amazing and the house is only some minutes away from the metro, that brings you downtown in 20 minutes. Overall, I can recommend to stay with Lorie. I had a really good time in the Pilsen Art House !!!
This is one of the coolest play you can stay in Chicago, with really nice hosts and people. The room is exactly as it's been described. And price is so reasonable. I recommend everyone to meet these great people
This is a wonderful, extremely inexpensive place in a poor but safe part of Chicago's South Side. The people are very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. You really feel at home. It's a young crowd, and there were a couple of problems with this particular room, which is TINY. It is also underneath the stairwell, so I had trouble getting to sleep with other guests tromping upstairs - perhaps it would be wise to go for one of their larger and more expensive rooms.
Thank you Lorie, Flow and Jay for your fine welcome and the opportunity to meet other young travelers in the communal kitchen. Again, unfortunately as my room was right off the kitchen, the party Friday night did keep me up when I had an important presentation to give Saturday morning... but no matter, it is still a really great place and I give it full marks.
An artistic experience that is definitely worth the money. I'm 6'2" and slept soundly on the bed, and Flow was very friendly and a great host.
Everything was perfect, room was as described, I would stay here again!
The room: small but nicely done up and furnished with heater and power sockets. the bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean. might feel claustrophobic at first but once you get used to it, can be quite cozy
The building: feels a bit old and worn but has an amazing character of its own! wall paintings adorn the place and it is generally clean and tidy.
The neighbourhood: i had some of the best mexican food ever! be sure to try the restaurants along W18th street (tacos, carnitas...). a short walk brings you to the pink line, from which it is merely 15 minutes to downtown chicago.
overall a good experience. if you're travelling alone on a budget and would like to meet people, explore interesting neighbourhoods. this is the place for you!
Reserved the room for a visitor from out of town, so I am passing along his comments. The room is small and without a window, but Lorie was very clear about this and it worked well for my friend's needs. The amenities are basic, but the location is good--the museum next door got rave reviews from my friend. Lorie was great coordinating the arrival time with my friend and communicating with me. Really helpful and flexible given somewhat difficult international communication. Thanks Lorie!
