About this listing

Just a 7-minute drive from Ubud's restaurant and retail district, this luxury family villa is nestled in the jungle overlooking the Petanu River. Perfect for 2 families or up to 4 couples. A nature retreat complete with a beautiful breakfast service and a basic farm-to-table fresh dinner menu.

The space

A stunning antique style home perched above Bali's Petanu River and just minutes from central Ubud. In Robinson Caruso fashion, the structure floats atop a jungle setting, affording views of a rare variety of native flora, fauna and rare indigenous trees. A nature sanctuary, the villa gains its inspiration from the traditional Javanese joglo architecture, incorporating natural tree trunk pillars and luxurious solid wood floors. The Master Bedroom stands apart from the two-storey open-air main house, as does the companion rustic French style kitchen. Moving down the embankment and toward the river, the property boasts a magnificent free-form pool complete with waterfalls, reflection pools, and an absolutely unique cliff-side dwelling in the form of a rustic cottage - the perfect get-away...

Best of all, our home features a team of people who will tantalize your taste buds with epicurean delights from around the world. Our "house best" is our Indonesian meal!

Guest access

With the exception of the owner's office, the entire villa and grounds are made available to our guests, all cared for and attended by our full-time staff. Meals can be prepared to your liking and an on-call masseuse is on call for a nominal additional fee.

Other things to note

For the love of Bali, we try very hard to be "off the grid" as much as possible. While each room has an air con, the rooms catch every possible daytime breeze and are all bathed in ambient sunlight. We use eco friendly soaps and cleaners and your food is almost 100% farm to table. We compost everything and recycle all trash.

We had a great time at Villa Anam Cara and Ayu and her team have been extremely kind and helpful, always going the extra mile and ensuring that everything was going well on our side. The villa is literally into the jungle, so very quiet although there is other houses nearby in the neighborhood. So a perfect place to relax and enjoy the space (and pool!) that the house has to offer. We really felt like we were at home and the villa has something very authentic and calm that you notice straight away and that makes you feel at ease immediately. Also, Ubud centre is only 20 minutes driving so easy to get there. Oka, the driver that the villa recommended us was very reliable and kind and we used his services a couple of time to do half/full day excursions or simply go to Ubud for lunch or sightseeing. He made some very good recommendations to us and took us to very nice restaurants so I would highly recommend him as well. The only comment I would make is the security/access of the house. It is built on a gorge so very sloppy and in some areas there is almost no barriers that can prevent from falling down. We came with our 2 year old boy and there was a constant fear that he would hurt himself so I wouldn't recommend to come if you have small kids (or otherwise, you will need to constantly watch them). Not only for kids but also for adults it can be pretty dangerous - the outside space of the pool is an example. So just something to bear in mind! Somehow we got used to and our son behaved well but an accident could have easily happened. It would be great to get this fixed as clearly it is the only negative thing we have to say about the villa, everything else was just perfect.

We highly recommend Anam Cara! What a delightful place in the jungle. It was exactly what we were looking for in our vacation to Bali. The house is so quiet and the only thing you hear is drumming off in the distance from the nearby temples. What a treat that was! The staff will go above and beyond to make your stay great, and will always ask how you are. Be upfront if there is something you really want, like a cooler full of drinks, cake, a driver for certain days and they will happily get it for you. Our family really loved our stay and the staff made that possible to escape our normal busy life. We had massages one day, and the lady came directly to the house and did them there. Highly recommend that! Ben the cat, the sweetest little guy was an added bonus. Be kind to the staff, and they will do the same to you. If you are looking for a quiet place to regroup your thoughts and spend good family qualtiy time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Anam Cara is the place for you. Every detail, down to the paintings and trinkets were so fun to explore too. Highly recommend Putra as a driver for your days out exploring. Not only is he an incredibly kinf man, he is also a tour guide and each place he takes you too, he explains it so you can understand the culture a bit better. He helped us and our children put on sarongs too so we could go into the temples. Great family photgrapher too!

I agree with all the other reviews, Villa Anam Cara is amazing and the Staff lead by Ayu was attentive and very welcoming! All the children in the group(5 years old) love the house, especially the staff, the house cat Ben, 2nd floor and the pool. My wife and I love the fact the owner had put a lot of thought and time into making this their home, starting from all the intricate details of the wood carving, decorations, to how the path leads down to the stream at its base! Simply an Oasis!

What can I say other than simply stunning! Ayu and staff were Extremely welcoming even though our arrival was delayed by a couple of hours. As we were being Shown through the house the whole family were stunned by the beauty of the place and surrounds! I don't think I've heard so many "great choice mum" ever! The tropical rain was an added bonus. Massage lady waiting for us patiently to settle in with drink and nibbles before she started on us! And then a wonderful meal afterwards. What a magic holy place this is. The bestest main bedroom had stunning views and was standalone to the rest of the house. The pool area was a bit tricky for me to get down due to rain and slippery steps and a few rotted rails but the kids helped! The pool was stunning and my dip refreshing until I had to go up again! And NYE for my 60th celebratory dinner was magic with a yummy chocolate cake! We stayed in and bought fireworks and had a blast with the staff! Mosquitoes were only a small problem and we knew that before coming so we brought lots of repellant and kept the ceiling fans on. The breakfasts were lovely and having dinners there was special but a bit pricey compared to restaurants we ate at. As it is remote there is not a lot to do other than totally relax which for Peter and I was fine. the kids wanted to do more but we didn't want to commit to what we wanted to do until that day and unfortunately in the end the recommended driver seemed frustrated with us and also we thought his price was steep. Ayu was happy to make calls to book restaurants and call the driver, I'd recommend buying a SIM card so besides Ayu calling you can call when she's not there. We came in Wet season so it was extremely humid which we expected (but it WAS so humid) and the rain was a welcome relief, mainly at night. The wildlife noises were amazing as was seeing them. And any issues that cropped up was immediately dealt with. Highly recommend this place - staff are fantastic no English except for the wonderful Ayu always willing and smiling. could be more stunning and better in high season rather than wet season but hey I can't do anything about the day I was born!

Response from Ayu:
Thank you Polly and again so glad that you enjoyed your stay and loved the Villa. It is stunning. As for mozzies, yes in rainy season we have some. otherwise we seem not to. And re driver, we will take this into consideration and have a list of available drivers. We're also happy to help all guests with planning as Ubud is a hopping place now and there's much to do and see and we have the best connections to those adventures! Always eager to please and make guests stays among their best holidays ever....we try!!!

And we agree re distance and need for driver but people often don't want us to arrange this. Will leave driver numbers w staff and they can arrange for guests. Thank you and safe travels home!!

This is a very unique villa well outside of the Ubud area in a small village. The villa (all main living areas/bathrooms/dining/kitchen) is completely open to the surrounding jungle (AC only in the bedrooms; and lots of mosquitos) so if you are at all squeamish about being immersed in nature, think twice about staying here. While it is cooler in Ubud at night, I did not want to leave the bedrooms open because of constant mosquito activity. The owners have decorated the space with beautiful artwork and things collected from their travels, making it seem like a real home which distinguishes it from the many generic villas in Bali. The staff here were lovely, especially Komang and Ayu; both went out of their way to make our stay more pleasant. There is a resident cat named Ben that we adored; he adopted us for the entire week. Getting into Ubud is a little inconvenient. If you are not comfortable riding a motorbike in Bali, then you will need a driver every time you want to go into town. The road leading to the village is very busy and congested, leaving even an experienced motorcycle driver apprehensive about driving back and forth. The pool was only used once during our stay as it's down many steep, stone steps and receives very little sun. My kids were not inclined to swim in it due to the temperature of the water, lack of sun, and too many insects in the pool. It's unlikely that I would stay here again as it's a little far from Ubud, the pool not ideal, the layout of the villa did not work for our family, and the inability to get away from mosquitos was really uncomfortable. My daughter described this place as creepy and claustrophobic; my son couldn't wait to leave because of the mosquitos (by the time we left, he had over 20 bites on his back and chest). However, for many people, this place could be a magical, peaceful place to stay while in Bali. So while it was not the right fit for us, those looking for a quiet place in nature would find it ideal. The host, Anne, was prompt in her replies and tried to address issues that arose in a timely fashion.
