Croaghacullion is a traditional Donegal coastal cottage that enjoys a remarkable secluded position overlooking Lougheraherk (lake) in this, the most traditional and picturesque part of Ireland. You get the whole cottage, in 3/4 acre of land overlooking a lake. Glencolmcille village (shops, great pubs with traditional music, Folk Museum, cafes, is a 13 minute drive).

The cottage sits in the heart of the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht in what is probably the most traditional area of Ireland. You can walk down to the beach from the cottage and you're unlikely to see another tourist, maybe just a lobster fisherman or one of the friendly, farmer neighbours. See more photos of this Donegal cottage. Just sitting on the bench in front can be lovely - you can usually hear the waves from the other side of the mountain.

Stay here to discover one of the most remarkable and beautiful landscapes in Ireland - we doubt you'll ever find better beaches than can be found locally, friendlier people, or such a sense of wilderness. These photos show the walk down to Port beach from the cottage, which feels like the very edge of Europe (9 times out of 10 you'll have the whole bay to yourself), or sit at home and enjoy the views over 'your' lough (lake).

Pets welcome - ask they are never allowed on sofas or beds please. Great place for dogs - enlcosed garden and miles of open mountain walking from the door, with fabulous beaches near.

Guest Access

The Neighborhood

  • Greg's cottage is a special place located in one of the most beautiful areas in Ireland. The cottage itself is so intriguing that it makes it hard to leave it. It is furnished beautifully and quiet comfortable. The landscape is spectacular with many great places to walk, bike or drive to close by. Thank you Greg for sharing your cottage and I can't wait to return.

glad you enjoyed! Mary was delighted with the chocolates you left her - such a kind touch - many thanks! come back soon. Greg

  • Amazing cottage in a beautiful location. We enjoyed relaxing in the cottage but there are many great walks to do in the area as well. Mary the housekeeper is a wonderful woman who we had a couple of nice chats with and Greg was a pleasure to deal with all the way through. All up this is a highly recommended place to stay for an authentic rural Ireland cottage stay and we would love to stay again.

  • My girlfriend and I had an great weekend in Greg’s cottage at the end of March. Its cozy with a great atmosphere and a well equipped kitchen.

The area is stunning, you have the wilderness you are going there for but with the comforts of the Cottage. We had mixed weather over our weekend, sunny periods for outdoorsy activities. Then retreated to the cottage and battened down the hatches when a storm came in. This did not put a dampener on things as we just stoked up the peat fire and opened the wine.

Had a couple of nice chats with Mary who gave us the low down on the area. Mary bless her contacted us on our drive home. After my girlfriend left her laptop and bag in the cottage, so we had one last farewell from Mary.

Over 5hrs drive from Dublin so we left early Friday afternoon, stopped at Asda in Enniskillen for the weekend shop. You can buy basics in Ardara but not fancy things city types like.

We took Monday off work so didn’t have to rush back on Sunday, we both decided that was a good decision.

    Recommend visiting:-

Port: stunning bay we had the place to ourselves got some great snaps.
Slieve League: very impressive cliffs. Were keen to do a boat tour but to early in the year :(
Maghera Beach: really impressive beach, met a local in a cave up on the cliffs who told us ghoulish stories about the history of the caves.
Nancy's Bar Ardara: Crab claws/ Guinness chocolate cake washed down with a Guinness or two…..slurp

We want to visit again in the summer/autumn.

  • This is a lovely cottage in an amazing setting. Not the easiest to find, but that is the beauty of a place like this. Very quaint but a wonderful place to stay. Would recommend to anyone looking to really get away from it all. Make sure to bring all your provisions before arriving as the nearest grocer is about an hour away.

For those who want to know about shops - you've two in Glencolmcille (15 mins), supermarkets in Ardara (20 mins) and also Killybegs. There's also a small shop over at he petrol station (with bar) by the fish factory (about 10 mins).

  • We had a very good stay in the cottage. It is a very special landscape. The cottage is well equipped, especially the kitchen!
Belfast and Dublin are doable for a day trip (one way 3,5 hours). The owner of the Cottage (Greg) is very fast responsing on the email.

    Response from Greg:

Glad you enjoyed your stay - you'll always be welcome in Donegal - MAry the housekeeper loved meeting you both :)

  • We have just returned yesterday from 4 wonderful days at Greg's cottage. The setting and atmosphere could not be better, the cottage has been tastefully restored and furnished in keeping with the traditional property (loved the collection of Swedish clocks!). The scenery in the surrounding area is simply breath-taking - unfortunately it snowed whilst we were there so we were indoors quite a bit but the cottage itself is lovely and cosy and there is plenty of great reading material to keep you occupied! Mary the housekeeper is an absolute gem, she lives just at the bottom of the lane and was so friendly and helpful, we were sad to say goodbye to her, but promised we would come back in the better weather. If you are thinking of booking this cottage don't hesitate - it is a perfect getaway for a couple looking to relax or equally would suit active holidaymakers as there are plenty of marked hiking/walking routes in the area. The roads are also very quiet - you won't see much in the way of traffic (apart from sheep - lol!). Another bonus is that the cottage is pet friendly - being able to bring our 2 dogs was great and it was a holiday for them as well! We will definitely be back. Thanks Greg for sharing your cottage!

  • Fabulous stay in a very dramatic location. Greg's cottage is comfortable, attractively furnished and well-equipped. January weather conditions in the Glengesh valley changed very rapidly and at times were not for the faint-hearted! The walk down by Port beach on a rough day is bracing to say the least. Housekeeper Mary and husband Columba very friendly. Much recommended.

  • Absolutely delightful cottage in a truly splendid spot. The kitchen is well equipped for baking & the fire is lovely to return to after a day in the marvellous countryside.

This didn't bother me, but suffice to say the doorways aren't tall-person friendly - just a note!
