The space

Named in the Sunday Times (Travel) as one of 'Top 20 Places for the Summer in UK or Ireland' 2012!

Note - this listing has 'live' and correct availability - you can book instantly - no need to enquire if there is availability - the calendar is correct :)

Croaghacullion is a traditional Donegal coastal cottage that enjoys a remarkable secluded position overlooking Lougheraherk (lake) in this, the most traditional and picturesque part of Ireland. You get the whole cottage, in 3/4 acre of land overlooking a lake. Glencolmcille village (shops, great pubs with traditional music, Folk Museum, cafes, is a 13 minute drive).

The cottage sits in the heart of the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht in what is probably the most traditional area of Ireland. You can walk down to the beach from the cottage and you're unlikely to see another tourist, maybe just a lobster fisherman or one of the friendly, farmer neighbours. See more photos of this Donegal cottage. Just sitting on the bench in front can be lovely - you can usually hear the waves from the other side of the mountain.

Stay here to discover one of the most remarkable and beautiful landscapes in Ireland - we doubt you'll ever find better beaches than can be found locally, friendlier people, or such a sense of wilderness. These photos show the walk down to Port beach from the cottage, which feels like the very edge of Europe (9 times out of 10 you'll have the whole bay to yourself), or sit at home and enjoy the views over 'your' lough (lake).

Pets welcome - ask they are never allowed on sofas or beds please. Great place for dogs - enlcosed garden and miles of open mountain walking from the door, with fabulous beaches near.

Guest access

A detached lakeside cottage and about an acre of land, with direct access to open-mountain walking.

Interaction with guests

You'll meet my lovely housekeeper, Mary, who lives in the neighbouring house on the track on the way to the cottage.

Pets - we welcome well behaved pets and a maximum of 2, there is a surcharge of €20 for 1 dog, €30 total for 2 - payable after arrival.

It is VERY important that pets are kept on leads when they are not in the garden, there are loose sheep on the roads and mountainside. I have a dog myself and I know from experience that most dog owners are very careful - thank you!

Thank you for leaving the cottage tidy. I don't expect you to clean but do wash up etc and leave in a reasonable state for Mary, thanks. Great if you can strip the bedsheets to help her after, thanks.

We stayed here for the 2nd week of our wedding anniversary. A comfortable base in which to explore the immediate surroundings: cycling down the return 10kms single track road to the nearby harbour at Port before breakfast. The 12kms clockwise walking over the cliffs at Slieve League in the rain. Cycling other peninsular routes north & south at Portnoo & Muckross head at Kilcar. Good idea to stock up on essentials before arrival, as the nearest shops are 10kms away. Rosemary & Andrew Hewett.

This is the most magical place in all of Ireland. The stay here changed me. For the better of course. Do not hesitate in booking it will be the best stay of your life.

Staying at this cottage was absolutely sublime - our favourite Air BnB experience by far (and we've had many wonderful stays!). The cottage is remote, but the directions Greg provided were clear and easy to follow - and when we did get lost headed to town the view never disappointed! We hope to return!!

We had a reall wonderful stay at Croaghacullion. The location was ideal if you want to get away from it all for a while - beautiful countryside and views, lovely and quiet- the only sounds were sheep and birds! The house itself has everything you could need or want and it has been refurbished in a way that preserves the authentic Donegal cottage style and feel. Everything worked perfectly; heating, hot water, kitchen appliances. here were lots of books to read and blankets to snuggle up with plus two stoves. It was also really lovely to chat with Mary. We toured around quite a bit of the Donegal coastline from the cottage but would like to explore more of the immediate surroundings next time. We did spend several hours at An Port one day and would definitely recommend it. Stunning views, beautiful secluded beach with waterfalls and coastal path to walk on. The only downside to our stay was that it was too short. We only had four nights but there's always next time! Thank you Greg, Yvonne and Mary. Debbie & Greg

This cottage is fantastic. You will feel as though you are living in a painting everyday. The views from the cottage are gorgeous. We used it as a home base for two out of our three week Holiday in Ireland. Mary was so incredibly welcoming to us and it was joy popping in to speak with her and visit for a few minutes most days. On our last day she even took us to meet some orphaned lambs that they were bottle feeding - so adorable! If you have the time follow the nearby Wild Atlantic Way which will lead you to several beautiful locations that will take your breath away. Also, don't miss out on the beautiful beaches and waterfalls all within a 30 minute drive. Thank you Mary, Greg & Yvonne!!! Our stay was LOVELY!
