The Space

Named in the Sunday Times (Travel) as one of 'Top 20 Places for the Summer in UK or Ireland' 2012!

Croaghacullion is a traditional Donegal coastal cottage that enjoys a remarkable secluded position overlooking Lougheraherk (lake) in this, the most traditional and picturesque part of Ireland. You get the whole cottage, in 3/4 acre of land overlooking a lake. Glencolmcille village (shops, great pubs with traditional music, Folk Museum, cafes, is a 13 minute drive).

The cottage sits in the heart of the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht in what is probably the most traditional area of Ireland. You can walk down to the beach from the cottage and you're unlikely to see another tourist, maybe just a lobster fisherman or one of the friendly, farmer neighbours. See more photos of this Donegal cottage. Just sitting on the bench in front can be lovely - you can usually hear the waves from the other side of the mountain.

Stay here to discover one of the most remarkable and beautiful landscapes in Ireland - we doubt you'll ever find better beaches than can be found locally, friendlier people, or such a sense of wilderness. These photos show the walk down to Port beach from the cottage, which feels like the very edge of Europe (9 times out of 10 you'll have the whole bay to yourself), or sit at home and enjoy the views over 'your' lough (lake).

Pets welcome - ask they are never allowed on sofas or beds please. Great place for dogs - enlcosed garden and miles of open mountain walking from the door, with fabulous beaches near.

Guest Access

A detached lakeside cottage and about an acre of land, with direct access to open-mountain walking.

The Neighborhood

Getting around

You'll probably need a car.

  • Had a fantastic 3 days at the cottage. Really beautiful location down a long and winding Donegal road. Felt like we were so far away from everywhere . Just what we wanted. The cottage is well kitted out and having internet was a bonus. Greg responds right away with any queries and Mary is available just down the road if you need anything else. Will hopefully be back.

  • Fantastic cottage in the countryside! It was exactly what we had hoped for! Beautiful little home with nothing but sheep and gorgeous irish countryside to look at. Mary was so welcoming and we will miss her! Thanks so much Greg for opening your home to us. It was wonderful to be able to spend part of our honeymoon there.

  • If you're looking for a remote cottage in a gorgeous part of the country, don't look any further, as you probably won't find better.

My boyfriend is a landscape photographer from Canada and we were touring the west of Ireland in search of rugged coastlines and remote scenic locations. We fell in love with the northern part of Donegal, but we were told that the area near Glenculmcille is really special and spiritual, so we decided to look for a weekend retreat there. Well, Greg's cottage is everything you could ask for and more. It is clear that he chose this place very carefully, as it's a truly special place. The cottage is in a very remote and beautiful location at the end of the road. Behind it is a hill, in front of it is a lake, and lots of cute sheep with their little lambs roam around everywhere. The road leading to the cottage is beautiful, and just a few minutes drive from this cottage, you'll find a rocky horseshoe-shaped beach with lots of huge rocks in the sea with trails leading off from it on both sides. The place is simply called 'Port' and it's one of the most beautiful and exciting places we've seen in the country. We only had one weekend there, so we didn't see much besides Port and a bit of Glenculmcille - where we went for groceries.

The cottage is really quaint and very tastefully decorated with period furniture. Greg knows what he's doing when it comes to interior design, so you're likely to spend some time just admiring the furniture and making notes for your own future dream cottage:) The kitchen is really well equipped (which is not always the case in cottages like this), so we cooked ourselves some nice dinners while there. The central heating is a big plus - so you don't have to make a fire to be warm, again unlike in other places. Greg has a nice DVD collection for a range of different movie tastes and we enjoyed watching a film from his collection on a rainy evening. Make sure you have a laptop with you as there is no device to view the DVDs on. There is also a nice collection of coffee table books and novels to read and browse. Finally, the availability of Wifi was very helpful for us, as we couldn't leave our work behind.

We made our reservation at the last minute and Greg replied to us immediately. Mary, the housekeeper, lives very nearby and is a very sweet and lovely woman. Everyone was a pleasure to deal with and we're looking forward to coming back to the cottage in the future.

We also went to Silver Strand beach in Malin Beg and found a message in a bottle! So look out for yours when you're there.

    Thank you Greg!

  • Greg's cottage is perfectly situated for a tranquil getaway in a beautiful part of Donegal. Greg has put a lot of thought and effort into furnishing this traditional cottage. We had great weather and our 4 year old loved running around the grounds and trying to play with the lambs.

  • Greg's cottage is a special place located in one of the most beautiful areas in Ireland. The cottage itself is so intriguing that it makes it hard to leave it. It is furnished beautifully and quiet comfortable. The landscape is spectacular with many great places to walk, bike or drive to close by. Thank you Greg for sharing your cottage and I can't wait to return.

  • Amazing cottage in a beautiful location. We enjoyed relaxing in the cottage but there are many great walks to do in the area as well. Mary the housekeeper is a wonderful woman who we had a couple of nice chats with and Greg was a pleasure to deal with all the way through. All up this is a highly recommended place to stay for an authentic rural Ireland cottage stay and we would love to stay again.
