Charming old Hawaiian farming village. From the house you can walk on a winding jungle road to the water falls at Kolekole Beach Park. The town gathers every Tuesday for our farmers market(3:30-5:00pm) Listen to bluegrass music while discovering some delicious local food.
Great house. We visited with our two daughter, 16 and 12. The bedroom has a great bed and the hide away bed in the living room was comfortable for my daughters. At night the frogs start singing so be aware this is as close to nature as you can get. However we loved the sounds, the rain and the scenery. The fridge is small so don't bring too much food up and it has only a small stove. It was enough for us since we were out all day. Overall a great experience.
Beautiful home. Difficult to find the first time (ask for closest landmarks for GPS). No cell reception. We were supposed to stay in the rear area of the house, but the power was out. We couldn't reach the owner, but Morgan (housekeeper/maid) came and let us into the front area of the house. After that, it was a good experience. The house is located just a short, beautiful drive from Hilo.
My husband and I booked this accommodation back in June of 2014. It was under a different owner at the time and the pictures looked amazing. We were a little confused when ownership changed hands before our visit but Teresa, the new owner did reply to our email and we established contact. We received directions from our host to the house a day or two before our arrival. We arrived in the dark and Teresa was not there to meet us. It was not a good start. If it had not been for the kindness of the vacationers in the main house, we probably would have spent the night in a hotel in Hilo. Although there is WiFi there is no cell service at the property and no land line. We could not make contact with our host that evening although we tried sending emails from the property, texts and phone calls by driving back toward Hilo to cell phone range. None of these were answered that night. It took us some time with the help of the vacationers in the main house to find out that the accommodation was at the back of the property with a key in the door. Check in instructions, which would have been most helpful, did not arrive until the next day along with the host’s new home number. The accommodation itself is charming and we enjoyed so many things about it. The beds were certainly adequate with lovely clean linens when we first arrived. The furnishings are bright and comfortable. We enjoyed having our coffee on the covered patio in the mornings, watching colorful birds, and listening to the lovely jungle noises around us. There are bananas, limes, and lemons growing right in the yard. At night the frogs get quite loud but you get used to the noise. It is a good base from which to explore the Big Islands many amazing attractions. However, there were a number of things that made our stay difficult to say the least. The linens and towels were never changed. We were provided with 3 fresh bath towels, left on the patio table, in the middle of our two week stay. The accommodation was not as clean as it could have been. We sent a number of emails and tried to call, asking about this and cleaning of the accommodation. There was no cleaning supplies at all. We received no reply. We finally had to buy toilet paper out of necessity, as well as paper towels, dish sponge for washing dishes, garbage bags, cleaning cloths, cleaning solution, and a broom and dustpan. We were provided with minimal towels at the beginning of our stay. We laundered them ourselves at the Laundromat. Airbnb did offer to compensate us for these out of pocket expenses and also tried to communicate with this host. We tried several times to reach out to Teresa to solve these issues. At one point, we asked to meet. She told us we could...
My fiancé and I stayed here for two nights. I would highly recommend this place. Adorable house, great location, quiet at night and convenient to Akaka Falls. It was close enough to Hilo that we could drive in for any supplies that we needed. Best of all, Teresa was incredibly helpful, and she promptly replied to all of our inquiries.
Place is quaint and cute. Spent 2 nights there with my wife and 1 and a half yr old. Like the other reviews have mentioned, the place looks older than the pictures indicates. And the kitchen is VERY small and simple so dont' expect to go to the market and get groceries to cook.
Also, this is not for folks who do not like the outdoors. The place is in a remote area outside of Hilo, surround by trees and nature. So be ready to be greeted by bugs. But at the same time, you are not paying Four Seasons prices so all is fair.
A little confusing when checking in due to new ownership of the main house. However, the place was nice, clean, spacious and very tropical. Walking down the road a few hundred yards either way, is like walking back in time...yet Hilo is only a 20 minute drive away. I would stay here again.
