Bookeen Hall is a 200 year old church about 20 minutes from Galway City and within easy reach of the Cliffs of Moher, The Burren and Connemara.

We offer a private room (with a king size bed and a single bed) with a private bathroom. For larger groups we can make a second room available (with a king size bed), so can accommodate up to 5. We live here with our dog and look forward to meeting you!

We recommend having a rental car. The nearest train station is 8 miles away in Athenry!

The space

A protected building and national monument, Bookeen Hall is a former Church of Ireland Chapel built in 1820. Part of the Dunsandle estate, the church was used for services by the estate’s Church of Ireland congregation. Built in stone, the rectangular hall with its large gothic windows and solid bell-tower can be seen across fields and woodland, making it a distinctive and well known local landmark.

It was deconsecrated in 1920 and 200 years after it was built it was given a new lease of life and converted into a two bedroom home.

Inside the interiors are bright, open and contemporary. The church is comprised of a large open plan living/dining room and two bedrooms. The guest bedroom available to visitors has access to its own bell tower/reading room with great views of the surrounding countryside and private bathroom complete with claw-foot bathtub. The guest room has a king size bed and a single bed and can accommodate three people.

Bookeen Hall is situated on the edge of Dunsandle wood which has some great walking and running routes, which your hosts, both keen runners, would be happy to show you. Quiet and peaceful, it is surrounded by woodland, and fields full of cattle and sheep.

Easily accessible by car, Bookeen Hall is just 2 mins from the Dublin / Galway motorway (Dublin airport is 2 hours away); about 1 hour from Shannon airport; a 20 min drive from beautiful Galway city; and located just a 10 min drive from the neighbouring towns of Athenry and Loughrea, both of which have a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and bars, and good public transport links. The church is ideally located for day trips to Connemara and the Cliffs of Moher and Burren region.

Enjoy our home baking with tea/coffee when you arrive and a continental breakfast each morning.

What to expect: a restored church – with a light, bright and homey feel to it. It’s also home to a greyhound called Mouse who can’t wait to meet you!

The Old Restored Church is absolutely beautiful and Chris is very kind and helpful (he helped recommend a route to take to get the best views that we would have missed if we had listened to our GPS)! We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend that anyone stay there if there are in the area.

Wonderful location! This was easily one of our favorite places we stayed at during vacation. The hosts were incredibly gracious and accommodating. Their dog was also a highlight! An absolute must if you're staying in County Galway.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay in Chris and Orla's place. The church is in a quiet spot but very accessible from the motorway. Chris was extremely helpful in getting us there and was very gracious and accommodating when we arrived. He spoke to us about various attractions around Galway (which is a short drive away) and even printed out maps with the spots he had referred to on them. Mouse, their rescue greyhound, is an absolute sweetheart and was one of the highlights. We missed our dogs back home and spending quality time with him was perfect! The room we slept in had stair access to the tower of the church; which was incredible. The bed was very comfortable and both of us got a much needed solid sleep in. We met Orla in the morning and she prepared a delicious breakfast with assorted breads, jams, fruits, cereals, granola, and fantastic coffee. It was delicious! Chris and Orla did a phenomenal job hosting us and we will certainly stay there again when we make another trip. Thank you guys! Give Mouse a pet for us :)
