About this listing

Bookeen Hall is a 200 year old church about 20 minutes from Galway City and within easy reach of the Cliffs of Moher, The Burren and Connemara.

We offer a private room (with a king size bed and a single bed) with a private bathroom. For larger groups we can make a second room available (with a king size bed), so can accommodate up to 5. We live here with our dog and look forward to meeting you!

We recommend having a rental car. The nearest train station is 8 miles away in Athenry!

The space

A protected building and national monument, Bookeen Hall is a former Church of Ireland Chapel built in 1820. Part of the Dunsandle estate, the church was used for services by the estate’s Church of Ireland congregation. Built in stone, the rectangular hall with its large gothic windows and solid bell-tower can be seen across fields and woodland, making it a distinctive and well known local landmark.

It was deconsecrated in 1920 and 200 years after it was built it was given a new lease of life and converted into a two bedroom home.

Inside the interiors are bright, open and contemporary. The church is comprised of a large open plan living/dining room and two bedrooms. The guest bedroom available to visitors has access to its own bell tower/reading room with great views of the surrounding countryside and private bathroom complete with claw-foot bathtub. The guest room has a king size bed and a single bed and can accommodate three people.

Bookeen Hall is situated on the edge of Dunsandle wood which has some great walking and running routes, which your hosts, both keen runners, would be happy to show you. Quiet and peaceful, it is surrounded by woodland, and fields full of cattle and sheep.

Easily accessible by car, Bookeen Hall is just 2 mins from the Dublin / Galway motorway (Dublin airport is 2 hours away); about 1 hour from Shannon airport; a 20 min drive from beautiful Galway city; and located just a 10 min drive from the neighbouring towns of Athenry and Loughrea, both of which have a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and bars, and good public transport links. The church is ideally located for day trips to Connemara and the Cliffs of Moher and Burren region.

Enjoy our home baking with tea/coffee when you arrive and a continental breakfast each morning.

What to expect: a restored church – with a light, bright and homey feel to it. It’s also home to a greyhound called Mouse who can’t wait to meet you!

Chris and olnas 200 yr old restored church was amazing. The place was impeccably clean and beautifully decorated. Chris gave us great advice about places to visit and olnas breakfast set up was delicious. The spot was secluded but close to the freeway and therefore everywhere else at the aame time. If youve got your own car i highly recommend this place

Absolutely perfect down to each detail. From the outstanding breakfast to the hidden adventure advice, everything was exceptional. Both Chris and Orla was warm, welcoming, and helpful. Mouse (their dog) was the icing on the cake for three girls who dearly missed their pets. Orla even did our laundry for us. A+ You won't be disappointed!

Chris & Orla's renovated church is just beautiful. The bedroom is roomy & has comfy beds. The bathroom has a great shower & a bath if you feel like relaxing in a tub. Wonderful breakfast selection & Orla's baked scones & cakes are super yummy! Both Chris & Orla are friendly & welcoming & wonderful hosts. A great place to stay out of Galway.

Cannot say enough great things about Chris and his home! Very accommodating to our check-in with very helpful directions to find his place. His home is stunning and unique, very clean, and our room was exactly as pictured. Galway is an easy 25min drive from his home, which was perfect for us since we wanted to visit Galway but not stay the night there. Chris was incredibly friendly and helpful during our stay, and made a delicious breakfast the next morning. Highly recommended!

I stayed for one night with two friends and absolutely loved it! It's an extra drive outside of Galway but very worth it. The room was cozy and comfortable, we were treated to hot tea and homemade cake when we arrived. Our hosts provided lots of helpful information about touring the area as well as assistance with a flat tire! Breakfast in the morning was incredible; pastries, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal and tea and coffee. Highly recommended to anyone coming through Galway.

Go! Pack your bags and go here. It was our first time staying in a home with others, and it could not have been better. It was an easy drive from Dublin, and a great jumping off point to explore the western coast. The location is easy to find, but beautiful and secluded. Chris told us how to take a walk in the woods to find a castle we never would have seen on our own, they welcomed us with coffee, helped us plan our driving routes, and were generally so welcoming and lovely. The home was comfortable and nice, even better than it looks. Everything down to the linens on the beds was just perfect. It felt very private, but it was also great to talk with them a bit. We LOVED getting to meet Mouse, the sweetest, calmest dog. We came downstairs in the morning to the most beautiful breakfast feast and could not stop ooh and aah-ing. Only wish we could've stayed longer! Truly could not recommend it more, probably my favorite airbnb experience.
