A protected building and national monument, Bookeen Hall is a former Church of Ireland Chapel built in 1808. Part of the Dunsandle estate, the church was used for services by the estate’s Church of Ireland congregation. Built in stone, the rectangular hall with its large gothic windows and solid bell-tower can be seen across fields and woodland, making it a distinctive and well known local landmark.
It was deconsecrated in 1920 and exactly 200 years after it was built it was given a new lease of life and converted into a two bedroom home.
Inside the interiors are bright, open and contemporary. The church is comprised of a large open plan living /dining room and two bedrooms. The guest bedroom available to visitors has access to its own bell tower/reading room with great views of the surrounding countryside and private bathroom complete with claw-foot bathtub.
Bookeen Hall is situated on the edge of Dunsandle wood which has some great walking and running routes, which your hosts, both keen runners, would be happy to show you. Quiet and peaceful, it is surrounded by woodland, and fields full of cattle and sheep.
Easily accessible by car, Bookeen Hall is just 2 mins from the Dublin / Galway motorway (Dublin airport is 2 hours away); about 1 hour from Shannon airport; a 20 min drive from beautiful Galway city; and located just a 10 min drive from the neighbouring towns of Athenry and Loughrea, both of which have a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and bars, and good public transport links.
Enjoy our home baking with tea/coffee when you arrive and a continental breakfast each morning.
What to expect: a restored church – with a light, bright and homey feel to it. It’s also home to two dogs that can’t wait to meet you!
No smoking inside.
Chris and Orla were extremely friendly and welcoming, as were the 2 lovely dogs! They both went out of their way to make our trip a great one, including dropping us to a great little restaurant they recommended. Be advised it is quite remote, having a car to get around is a necessity. Also due to the style of the building can be noisy.
Overall a beautiful home and a really unique space to spend some time in.
Chris and Orla were amazing hosts and their restored church enchanting. They graciously welcomed us in the evening and offered yes and treats & tea right away. Chris kindly helped with our luggage. The room was large and perfect for the 3 adults in our party. We went to the top of the bell tower and admired the amazing restoration from top to bottom. Breakfast was unbelievable - breads, yogurt, varieties of cereal, eggs, fresh fruit, coffee, tea, juices and more! We felt so spoiled! We loved these hosts and their impeccable home. Thank you sincerely Chris and Orla! 3
We had such a nice time we stayed again on our way back to Dublin! We needed some rest and quiet at the end of our busy trip, and Chris and Orla's was the perfect place to get it.
Our stay with Chris and Orla was fantastic. Their home is amazing- tasteful and cosy, and clearly the result of a lot of care and hard work. They are very welcoming and easy-going, and the dogs are great fun as well. We truly felt at ease and relaxed during our stay.
We had a lovely stay at Chris and Orla's beautiful church conversion. Really easily accessible from the M6 (although don't ask anyone in Athenry where Bookeen is - no clue!) which makes day trips really simple. The room was gorgeous as was our bathroom and the breakfast was so delicious with every possible option catered for! We loved the dogs, missing them already. We would definitely recommend staying with Chris and Orla. Thank you very much!
Great hosts, beautiful house, lovely breakfast....there is nothing more to add! We had a wonderful time. We can highly recommended to anyone.
It was just amazing! We had a lovely time here. Chris and Orla were fab and their dogs are so much fun :) The place has a superb atmosphere and it couldn't be in a better location, just a stone's throw away from Galway!
