About this listing
Bookeen Hall is a 200 year old restored church located approximately 20 minutes from Galway City and within easy reach of the Cliffs of Moher, The Burren and Connemara. We look forward to meeting you!
A protected building and national monument, Bookeen Hall is a former Church of Ireland Chapel built in 1820. Part of the Dunsandle estate, the church was used for services by the estate’s Church of Ireland congregation. Built in stone, the rectangular hall with its large gothic windows and solid bell-tower can be seen across fields and woodland, making it a distinctive and well known local landmark.
It was deconsecrated in 1920 and 200 years after it was built it was given a new lease of life and converted into a two bedroom home.
Inside the interiors are bright, open and contemporary. The church is comprised of a large open plan living /dining room and two bedrooms. The guest bedroom available to visitors has access to its own bell tower/reading room with great views of the surrounding countryside and private bathroom complete with claw-foot bathtub.
Bookeen Hall is situated on the edge of Dunsandle wood which has some great walking and running routes, which your hosts, both keen runners, would be happy to show you. Quiet and peaceful, it is surrounded by woodland, and fields full of cattle and sheep.
Easily accessible by car, Bookeen Hall is just 2 mins from the Dublin / Galway motorway (Dublin airport is 2 hours away); about 1 hour from Shannon airport; a 20 min drive from beautiful Galway city; and located just a 10 min drive from the neighbouring towns of Athenry and Loughrea, both of which have a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and bars, and good public transport links. The church is ideally located for day trips to Connemara and the Cliffs of Moher and Burren region.
Enjoy our home baking with tea/coffee when you arrive and a continental breakfast each morning.
What to expect: a restored church – with a light, bright and homey feel to it. It’s also home to two dogs that can’t wait to meet you!
No smoking inside.
Although we were unable to meet Chris and Orla in person (which was pre known) we had a wonderful stay at this beautiful property. Chris and Orla ensured we had everything we needed and even kindly left some home made breakfast treats for us. Staying in this restored church was a great experience and We thank-you both so much for welcoming us into your home. We hope to be able to return again some day!
The whole experience of staying at Bookeen Hall was both comfortable and magical. Everything was perfect from the beautifully restored old Church turned into a lovely home to the delicious and artfully prepared breakfast every morning. We loved the dogs and the décor and Chris and Orla were so warm and friendly, it was like visiting our own kids and relatives.
My husband is a runner, as are Chris and Orla, and they pointed him to good places to run and also had great advice about places to eat and things to see in the area. We had never stayed at B&B before, but this was so much more homey than any hotel. There were so many nice little touched, the bottle of water with mint in our room, the artwork all over, the happy spirit of the ancient church retained in modern style and comfort. The breakfast every day was superb, something to look forward to, the bed was comfortable with lovely linens, and the whole stay was a joy.
We would love to come back again, and would highly recommend Bookeen Hall to anyone traveling in the Galway area.
Chris welcomed us to his beautifully restored church home and since we were famished obtained a real at a fabulous restaurant, Taste Matters, in Loughrea. The home is so tastefully decorated and the bedroom was roomy and beds were comfortable. The clawfoot tub was a delight. Orla served a scrumptous breakfast of eggs, yogurt, cereals and delicious pastries. Chris even tracked us down when my husband left his glasses. A truly welcoming and unique experience.
My husband and I had a GREAT time at Chris and Orla's home. They were kind, thoughtful, and accommodating. The breakfast they prepared was perfect, and their home is out in the country but close enough to Galway, the Burren, Connemara, and other nice areas. (They had some great recommendations.) They also know how to do a mean renovation - we were in constant awe of the talent, care and attention to detail, and impressive design that was put into Bookeen Hall. It was truly an unforgettable experience to stay in their home. Highly recommended to anyone wanting to visit the Galway area.
We had a wonderful time staying with Chris and Orla. They are really fun people and the work they've done to make the historic church building feel cozy and welcoming is incredible.
What a fabulous stay we had! Chris and Orla are great hosts. They provided everything we needed from tea when we arrived and delicious breakfast, to perfect recommendations for a day of sightseeing (even graciously offering a personal map so we could take the best route). My husband and I both loved their friendly pups too! The church is such a lovely building and they've refashioned it to be such a cozy home. It's the perfect quiet spot for an Irish holiday, a 20 minute drive to Galway, and very close to the beautiful parks in Connemara and the Burren. I would heartily recommend staying here!! I wish we could've stayed longer!
My husband and I stayed for one night at Bookeen Hall, which was definitely one of the highlights of my first trip to Ireland. Not only were our hosts very welcoming, but I also appreciated that Chris was very prompt in responding to messages (and proactive about sending information our way regarding our stay.)
Missing our own dogs, I was eager to get some snuggle time in with Mouse and Monkey. Let's just say they did not disappoint. These dogs are absolutely beautiful and so well behaved. Our hosts were definitely careful about making sure we were comfortable with the dogs and did not just "let them loose," which was above and beyond necessary since we were guests in their home.
Do not second guess your decision to stay here. This is an absolutely beautiful, one-of-a-kind location you will not regret. I will recommend it to any family and friends who plan to visit Ireland in the future.
Also, let's talk food: Be sure to trust Chris on his dinner recommendations. Also, the breakfast that was prepared by our hosts was a "lovely" surprise...and delicious!
