Bookeen Hall is a 200 year old restored church located approximately 20 minutes from Galway City and within easy reach of the Cliffs of Moher, The Burren and Connemara. Your room has its own private tower. We look forward to meeting you!
A protected building and national monument, Bookeen Hall is a former Church of Ireland Chapel built in 1820. Part of the Dunsandle estate, the church was used for services by the estate’s Church of Ireland congregation. Built in stone, the rectangular hall with its large gothic windows and solid bell-tower can be seen across fields and woodland, making it a distinctive and well known local landmark.
It was deconsecrated in 1920 and 200 years after it was built it was given a new lease of life and converted into a two bedroom home.
Inside the interiors are bright, open and contemporary. The church is comprised of a large open plan living /dining room and two bedrooms. The guest bedroom available to visitors has access to its own bell tower/reading room with great views of the surrounding countryside and private bathroom complete with claw-foot bathtub.
Bookeen Hall is situated on the edge of Dunsandle wood which has some great walking and running routes, which your hosts, both keen runners, would be happy to show you. Quiet and peaceful, it is surrounded by woodland, and fields full of cattle and sheep.
Easily accessible by car, Bookeen Hall is just 2 mins from the Dublin / Galway motorway (Dublin airport is 2 hours away); about 1 hour from Shannon airport; a 20 min drive from beautiful Galway city; and located just a 10 min drive from the neighbouring towns of Athenry and Loughrea, both of which have a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and bars, and good public transport links. The church is ideally located for day trips to Connemara and the Cliffs of Moher and Burren region.
Enjoy our home baking with tea/coffee when you arrive and a continental breakfast each morning.
What to expect: a restored church – with a light, bright and homey feel to it. It’s also home to two dogs that can’t wait to meet you!
No smoking inside.
Myself and Jamie had a lovely time thanks to you Chris & Ola. Your accommodation is very impressive and you were very welcoming, courteouse (cant spell!), informative, attentive and accommodating - bless you both. Breckies was very yummy with really, loads to chose from!!. I just missed a little rasher that all to wrap the boiled egg, that's all. I'm good all year so don't mind a little saturated fat on me hols. Hopefully we will stay again, next time with Eileen and if I come across any other pics or details I think are of vague interest, I will surely sent them on. King Regards and hope Nanoo Nanoo liked to see the oldish pics. Jim & Jamie. Thanks for that chaps email address Chris.
What a wonderful place to say. Chris and Orla are the most gorgeous hosts. Their house is so warm and cosy and the room we stayed in was so roomy. We even had access to the church steeple from our room. Breakfast was yummy with home made treats served to us. Right down to a delicious chocolate cupcake with tiny eggs on top as we were there Easter Sunday morning. Would definatly recommend to anyone who are thinking of staying there.

Chris and Orla made us feel like we were the most amazing and interesting guests they ever had (of course that's not true!) Their church home is spotless, beautiful, warm and cozy. The breakfast was beautifully presented and so relaxing. The bedroom was large and oh the bed was so comfortable! We are so glad we got to stay here. And we got to laugh at and love their dogs, Mouse and Monkey! Thanks for an unforgettable stay!
What an amazing visit! This was stop 3 on our 12 day Ireland honeymoon roadtrip and we really wanted to stay longer!!! The church is absolutely beautiful and comfortable. Orla made us the most wonderful breakfasts in the mornings and Chris was great about giving us recommendations and directions. Galway was our favorite city that we visited on this trip and it was nice to be so close but still feel the privacy and peacefulness of the country. We really loved talking to both of them and spending time with their dogs. We didn't just stay in a super cool old church - we also made some great friends (with good music taste and great style, I might add!). We would love to come back and we will recommend this listing to anyone we know who plans to visit Ireland!!!!!
Chris was a great host! His home is so AMAZING! A place to fall in love with. A stay is definitely worth it!
We had a wonderful welcome with tea and cookies, interesting chats and good advices for dinner.
We felt very comfortable at this cosy place. The breakfast was perfect and very delicious!
We totally recommend him as a host!
