The Space

A protected building and national monument, Bookeen Hall is a former Church of Ireland Chapel built in 1808. Part of the Dunsandle estate, the church was used for services by the estate’s Church of Ireland congregation. Built in stone, the rectangular hall with its large gothic windows and solid bell-tower can be seen across fields and woodland, making it a distinctive and well known local landmark.

It was deconsecrated in 1920 and exactly 200 years after it was built it was (email hidden) of life and converted into a two bedroom home.

Inside the interiors are bright, open and contemporary. The church is comprised of a large open plan living /dining room and two bedrooms. The guest bedroom available to visitors has access to its own bell tower/reading room with great views of the surrounding countryside and private bathroom complete with claw-foot bathtub.

Bookeen Hall is situated on the edge of Dunsandle wood which has some great walking and running routes, which your hosts, both keen runners, would be happy to show you. Quiet and peaceful, it is surrounded by woodland, and fields full of cattle and sheep.

Easily accessible by car, Bookeen Hall is just 2 mins from the Dublin / Galway motorway (Dublin airport is 2 hours away); about 1 hour from Shannon airport; a 20 min drive from beautiful Galway city; and located just a 10 min drive from the neighbouring towns of Athenry and Loughrea, both of which have a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and bars, and good public transport links.

Enjoy our home baking with tea/coffee when you arrive and a continental breakfast each morning.

What to expect: a restored church – with a light, bright and homey feel to it. It’s also home to two dogs that can’t wait to meet you!

  • This place has character & style and we absolutely enjoyed our stay. If you're looking for a special place, that's where you should go. Chris & Orla were wonderful hosts, offering tea and freshly-baked cake when we arrived, and we felt very welcome. The breakfast was just excellent. Would love to come back when visiting Ireland again!

  • Incredible! Chris and Orla were simply amazing. They were wonderful hosts and went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable! The Church was beautiful and was even more amazing than the pictures. I could not give a higher recommendation for Bookeen Hill. It will be the highlight of your travels as it was for ours.

  • We had a great stay with Chris. He sent us a map so we had no problem finding the church. He has done an incredible job of turning a 200 year old church into a modern residence on the inside without altering the old character of the church. You can still go up into the bell tower. We had plenty of space upstairs that included a very stylish and modern bathroom. In addition Chris was a great host, offering afternoon tea, a hike suggestion that led us to a 15th century castle, and advice that led us to a gourmet restaurant in nearby Loughrea. He even let us use the laundry! The breakfast was a fresh and nourishing continental breakfast very well done. It is a great place in the Irish countryside.

  • From the moment he opened the door we knew that this was going to be a good experience. Chris is a friendly, unassuming guy who will welcome you into his home in just the right way - not too effusive, not too laid-back. He was helpful in making suggestions for sight-seeing in the area, and he was interested in our stories at the end of each day.

The church and its grounds are spectacular. Chris and Orla have great style and there's a reason their home has been featured in interior design magazines and websites. Our room was neat, tidy and clean. The bed is very comfortable and we slept well each night. The breakfasts were delicious - fresh fruits, granola, eggs, toast and jam, and high-quality teas or coffee.

When you stay at Bookeen Hall it begins to feel like home. The church is within a couple of miles of the cross-country M6 carriageway, but you never hear it. Instead, you hear the distant bleatings of sheep and songs of small birds in the pastures. It's very comforting. There's a forest nearby if you feel like a walk.

Lastly, if you love dogs then you're in for a treat. Their dogs Munky and Mouse are two of the best dogs we've ever met. Having them there made it feel even more home-like, and helped us not to miss our own dog back home in the U.S. The only problem is that now we miss these two Irish dogs!

I would recommend any couple who are traveling through Galway to stay at Bookeen Hall. Probably the best fit would be younger or fit, older folks who are looking for something out of the ordinary. You won't be disappointed.

... und the banana-cake - taste it :-)
