About this listing
Bookeen Hall is a 200 year old restored church located approximately 20 minutes from Galway City and within easy reach of the Cliffs of Moher, The Burren and Connemara. We look forward to meeting you!
A protected building and national monument, Bookeen Hall is a former Church of Ireland Chapel built in 1820. Part of the Dunsandle estate, the church was used for services by the estate’s Church of Ireland congregation. Built in stone, the rectangular hall with its large gothic windows and solid bell-tower can be seen across fields and woodland, making it a distinctive and well known local landmark.
It was deconsecrated in 1920 and 200 years after it was built it was given a new lease of life and converted into a two bedroom home.
Inside the interiors are bright, open and contemporary. The church is comprised of a large open plan living /dining room and two bedrooms. The guest bedroom available to visitors has access to its own bell tower/reading room with great views of the surrounding countryside and private bathroom complete with claw-foot bathtub.
Bookeen Hall is situated on the edge of Dunsandle wood which has some great walking and running routes, which your hosts, both keen runners, would be happy to show you. Quiet and peaceful, it is surrounded by woodland, and fields full of cattle and sheep.
Easily accessible by car, Bookeen Hall is just 2 mins from the Dublin / Galway motorway (Dublin airport is 2 hours away); about 1 hour from Shannon airport; a 20 min drive from beautiful Galway city; and located just a 10 min drive from the neighbouring towns of Athenry and Loughrea, both of which have a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and bars, and good public transport links. The church is ideally located for day trips to Connemara and the Cliffs of Moher and Burren region.
Enjoy our home baking with tea/coffee when you arrive and a continental breakfast each morning.
What to expect: a restored church – with a light, bright and homey feel to it. It’s also home to two dogs that can’t wait to meet you!
No smoking inside.
This was the best Bnb experience ever. The house is absolutely great. The hosts, Chris and Orla, were more than welcoming. We got stuck on our way there and Chris came to pick us up all the way from Kiltullagh to Athenry.
Breakfast was fantastic, given we were vegetarians, we could see the special effort taken to provide us with a great breakfast experience.
Last but not in any way the least, Mouse and Monkey made our stay memorable.
The hosts have done a remarkable job in converting a modestly sized old church into a comfortable and spacious home. Bedroom and bathroom were excellent and the continental breakfast was first-class.
Chris and Orla were a pleasure to meet, and we truly loved playing with their dogs Monkey and Mouse. The location was easy to find (it's even in Google maps!) and was convenient for our ambiguous arrival time. Admittedly, we were a bit nervous about sharing the space with them in a seemingly small home, but we were pleasantly surprised by how private the room was. The breakfast was lovely, and they both were the right balance of interested in chatting but giving us privacy.
Staying at Bookeen was the best choice we could have made for our stay in County Galway. Both Chris and Orla were excited to help us find the hidden gems and were interested in how our days went. It is obvious that they love their home and were very happy to answer any questions we had about the restoration of the church.
The feast that we had every morning was a great way to start our adventures. Pastries, fruit, granola and yogurt were just some of the good things in the spread.
Monkey and Mouse are also great additions to the household and very happy to greet new guests, but are also very quiet.
As it is in the countryside, you will have to have your own car, but it is central to so much that County Galway has to offer. Definitely a recommendation for anyone with their own means of transportation.
This restored church is AMAZING. I love how the homeowners combined both modern touches and decor with classic period inspired renovations. Their home is quite stunning.
The guest room was very big, with two of the church's windows peering above the floors. It was charming. The closet was my hands down favorite, with a beautiful armoire and a small staircase that leads to a sitting area in the old bell tower. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and we quite enjoyed the mint water left next to the bed.
In the morning we had such a great breakfast (rather a feast). We were pretty excited to see chia seeds and linseeds as part of the breakfast offerings, along with juice, tea, coffee, a variety of cereals, breads, eggs, and fresh fruit.
Chatting with Orla and Chris was really nice. We love hearing local recommendations for great eateries and places to visit. We spent our next day avoiding the crowds and thoroughly enjoying Ireland's coast.
These two might have inspired us to find an old building to renovate. Ha! Great couple. We'd love to stay again.
Bookeen is a very beautiful place. The church house is very stylish. Chris is a very nice person. He gave me a lot of helps of directions and visiting suggestions when I traveling. The breakfast was good. So everything of Bookeen is perfect. It's a worthwhile place for holiday.
We booked 5 accommodations in Ireland for our trip and this one was by far the coolest place we stayed. As long as you don't require a place close to a metro area, I would absolutely recommend staying here. The place is fantastic and becomes even more so when Chris shows you the progress of renovation. Chris and Orla are great hosts giving a great recommendation for a restaurant in town. He also recommended a running route in the area which included local ruins that you won't find in any guidebook. I can't say enough about our experience there. Well worth the 20 min. drive from Galway. 5 stars is not enough.
