The space

One important aspect that makes this casita more unique is it gives you a blend of both Centro and a more spacious, tranquil environment. You can easily get to Centro but return to a peaceful home with gardens, hummingbirds and amazing views. In addition, I LOVE San Miguel which was voted #1 Tourist Destination in the World by Conde Nast and I want you to enjoy San Miguel too. I provide information on tours with locals that I personally know (eg horseback and ATV riding, rock climbing, day tours to Guanajuato etc). When I am going kayaking, to the hot springs, the mercado or a Mexican fiesta I will invite you to join me and/or provide transportation. You will have the opportunity to explore on your own but see more of San Miguel via the eyes of someone who lives here.

Guest access

Guests will have access to Casita Danielita via a private entrance through a beautiful garden. The second floor casita and terraza has outside dining for six guests and there is a third floor terraza with outdoor kitchen & bar and sofa for reading & siestas. Wireless internet available throughout.

Interaction with guests

I am onsite in the casa on the first floor. Thus, I can be more readily available to assist you. At the same time I respect guests' privacy.

The neighborhood

Safe street with a blend of lovely Mexican and ex-pat neighbors who look out for each other. This colonia was started as an artist community and some of the neighbours have taken on different projects for example, building a playground for the children. You can walk on the country road to Centro and see children riding horses bareback and then 10 min later be on the bustling streets of San Miguel.

Getting around

Bus runs every 10 minutes for $5 pesos from end of the cobblestone street directly to Luciernga Mall (Soriana supermarket, Office Depot, etc), Mega (supermarket), Tiangus Tuesday market and hospitals, etc. The same bus can drop you off where it is then approx 15 - 20 min level walk to the main jardin (garden) in Centro. If you prefer to not take the bus and walk from your casita there is a country dirt road to Centro approx 25 -30 min walk or one can take a more leisurely walk to Centro through the hills behind your casita to Charco Botanical Gardens and down through a quaint neighbourhood to Centro. Lots of options and scenery. Taxis are available 24/7 if you prefer to walk (or bus) one way and cab home. Cabs cost approx $40-60 pesos ($3.50 - 5.00 USD). In addition, I check in with guests and will drive them or drop them off near their destination and we can arrange joint trips to the mercado, supermarket etc

Other things to note

This is Mexico and there are more parades and cultural fiestas (versus "beach parties") than in many other areas on the coast. Thus, there are fireworks going off at times in the early morning to celebrate a family members' birthday or anniversary, music, barking dogs barking etc. If you are a light sleeper please, keep this in mind although you will encounter this no matter where you stay in San Miguel. The casita, in general, is much more quiet than closer to Centro but it is important that guests know and appreciate this is Mexico. TEN Reasons People Like San Miguel de Allende

How was our stay? Fantastic! Joey's place is a little north of the town of SMA in the Montes de Loreto neighborhood. Her home, with the guest apartment above, is on a steep street, the houses stair-stepping up the hill, with a basalt-rock face behind. Her place sits at 6,450 feet. The apartment takes advantage of the almost-always-perfect weather by having three enclosed outdoor areas: A small patio with a bistro table and two chairs off the kitchen -- a great place for coffee or breakfast, a large patio with a wooden table seating six on the west side near the entry door, and a stairway upstairs to the covered-but-open rooftop deck that has a curved bar with 4 barstools. an L-shaped couch and three lounge chairs; it's a huge, very well-done deck. And probably our favorite thing about her place. Most evenings (of a month stay), we gravitated up top to sit watch the sunset. The view is spectacular. Behind us was the cliff-face to the east, to the south and below is San Miguel with the steeples and domes making the town look like a city in a fairy tale. To the west is the vast Bajio plateau with the Guanajuato mountains (and other ranges) rising up, the sun setting behind them. Big sky country -- a 180-degree panorama -- with many a spectacular sunset up on that roof the likes of which we have never seen before. Joey is quite the gardener, and when we'd enter her secured property, our noses were overwhelmed by the lavender bushes along the walkway (and a million other native plants.) The apartment itself is well-decorated with tasteful her photos of local scenes and local items. Her kitchen, although not big, was by far the best-stocked and organized kitchen of the four airbnb places we stayed at in Mexico on this trip. We had everything we needed and then some. There is a two-burner stovetop but no oven -- not needed, since she has provided a microwave, toaster oven (and blender, too.) The bed is called a matrimonial in Mexico, which is a double that worked fine for us -- but something to consider if you played tackle in the NFL. Transportation: We did this month in SMA without ever renting a car. We arrived by first-class bus from Guanajuato to the terminal and took a taxi to her place, cost $3 (using 20 pesos to the dollar, where the exchange rate was at for our visit 3/17.) A trip to the central plaza downtown was $2.50 plus tip. We'd also take the bus from the adjacent town of San Luis Rey to the Centro downtown for 5 pesos -- that will soon be 7 pesos, and that's 25 cents, soon to be about 35 cents US! If we needed to go to "Mega," now called La Comer, the fancy, well-stocked grocery store, we took a different bus, the one that stops right at the end of her street (Calle Pericos) --...

Joey was more than just a host, she sent us information on events, places to see and links to all kinds of great San Miguel de Allende activities. The casita (apartment was actually 2 floors and had everything you could possibly want for a great stay. You don't want to miss the view and and comfort of the third floor outdoor patio. Joey was there to greet us, show us all the many amenities and even drove us into Centro a couple of times. We are dog people and really enjoyed the occasional serenading of the neighbourhood dogs informing us of things going on in the neighbourhood. Something else we learned is that fireworks are not just for Victoria Day and Canada Day, but are used often by Mexicans for celebrating birthdays and other happy life events - you can hear them from a distance and sometimes very close by. We thouroughly enjoyed our week at Joey's casita in San Miguel and will recommend it to our friends. Erik and Rose

We're very, very picky travelers and this place met all of our expectations. Joey was an amazing host and made the Casita feel like a home away from home. She went out of her way providing us with great links for things to do in San Miguel and was attentive to our every need, but gave us the space we needed to enjoy every minute of our stay. We could not have asked for a better host. About the place....the view, the view, the view. This place offers one of the best views in San Miguel. The layout of the casita was great, the design was perfect and the upper terrace provides and amazing place for every meal, but especially sunrise and sunset. Screaming wi-fi, wonderful hot shower and a fabulous kitchen with all the amenities. We couldn't have asked for a better stay.

Hola! I am Canadian but lived in Seattle, WA for many years and now reside in beautiful San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Previously worked at the Univ of Washington Harborview Medical Center as a nurse practitioner. I bought a casa in San Miguel in March 2009 and l completed the casita, third floor terraza and garden in late 2012. I love to be active in terms of hiking, kayaking and swimming. I am open and artistic as evidenced when you meet me or walk in my front door. Travel and photography are two of my greatest passions. I love to share San Miguel with my guests.
