About This Listing
Relax and enjoy staying in this cute country cottage on an organic farm, in the heart of Ireland. Only 50 mins from Dublin and 5 mins from Stradbally, this is a perfect touring base. Turf fire, cute garden and great traditional Irish pub nearby.
The house has two bedrooms. One room has a double bed and the other two singles, either/both available depending on guest requirements.
[Single room rate is available so please see below or message me]
The house is warm and tastefully decorated with lovely comfy beds, Egyptian cotton sheets, towels etc. Hot water is plentiful and there's a great shower and bath. (fresh water from our own well) The central heating runs on a wood burning stove which keeps the place roasting hot during the winter. I look after this so guests can relax and enjoy. There's an open fire in the sitting room. The house is a listed heritage building and approx 400 years old - with modern interior/ insulation / heating etc.
I am relatively new to air bnb and unable to get their system to register room rates for me. To make it clear. Each room is €30 per person sharing per night or € 40 for single occupancy, includes tea/coffee/cereal/toast.
For Electric Picinic and the Ploughing Championships the full house is available for rent .I will not be taking bookings for these events until May 2014.
Location is a 5 minute drive from the M7 motorway and 5 minute drive from Stradbally. Galway, Kilkenny, Waterford, Blarney, Cork, Co.Clare are very easily reached in around two hours.
Interaction with Guests
Depends on time of visit but I do my utmost to meet and greet guests. If not, my Mum and family members will be on hand to help.
Vicarstown is a scenic village with a lovely canal harbour/marina. Our local pub, the Fisherman's Inn, attracts visitors from all corners of the planet and is renowned for its traditional music, turf fires and warm welcome. Said to be the 'most haunted' pub in the country, the lovely thatched white washed establishment is perched on a cross roads in the middle of no where. The area is also blessed with canal bank walks and close to a lot of attractions including Stradbally and Emo Court.
Perfect central base for exploring Ireland. Own transport is preferable/easiest but can collect from bus. We have had some keen cyclists stay and that worked out great. The next door neighbour is a taxi driver so guests will never be stranded.
Other Things to Note
The nearest eateries start at 5km away in Stradbally plus the Gandon Inn, Killenard, Portarlington and Portlaoise. The Fishermans Inn serves delicous pies and chips. At present we do not have internet in house and looking into this. The local pub and several places in the area have free wi-fi.
This is a Great base for any visitor to Ireland.
Easy reach for day trip to Dublin city, Kilkenny, Waterford, Cork, Galway, Bunratty and many more fantastic places of interest.
If you were to arrive in Ireland and drive straight from Dublin airport, this would be an idyllic start to any visit to the country. Trust me, I've traveled a lot and know these things :-)
County Laois is itself a worthy and understated tourist attraction, often missed by visitors on a tight schedule. The scenery and hospitality is wonderful.
The Slieve Bloom Mountains
Abbeyleix Heritage town and museum
The Killenard Heritage Golf and Spa hotel is just up the road if you fancy a round or an afternoon of pampering.
Kildare Village shopping centre is 20 minutes away, as are all the other attractions including the Japanese gardens and the Curragh racecourse.
The possibilities are endless and I look forward to helping my guests plan a wonderful trip to suit their particular interests.
No smoking or pets inside house.
Very quiet & friendly area of small hamlet Vicarstown. Lovely thatched pub Fishermans Inn a few km away. County Laois is ideal location for visiting Kildare Village (15min), Kilkenny City (45min), Castlecomer (20min), Port Laois (20min) & Offaly. Country cottage very old and a step back into Irish farming life, not for the faint hearted or someone who likes home comforts!
Margaret was an excellent host. Gorgeous cottage and fire lit every day for us. Highly recommend
We stayed in Margaret's cottage for two nights and it was excellent. Exactly what we needed close to Stradbally.
Margaret was an excellent host, very welcoming and friendly.
About the Host, Margaret
I'm an avid traveler and have been lucky enough to have trotted around much of the globe before returning to settle in my ancestral home. I know and love Ireland and think it is one of the best places on the planet. I have lots of information to share on great places to eat, visit, walk, hike, sing, dance, play tunes and have a fantastic time. I love meeting people and galavanting around the country, when I have time. I'm due another trip for afternoon tea in Fr Ted's house and lunch at the gorgeous Gallery Café, on the edge of the Burren, really soon!!
