Artist's 1920's house and studio in Wellington's best beach-side suburb, Island Bay. Enjoy a bespoke and unique charming home away from home. Our home was featured in the July issue of Urbis Magazine.
2 night minimum booking applies.
This charming and luxurious house was renovated throughout in 2012. Each corner is unique. A large double bedroom has views to the ocean. The office is relaxing, modern with a touch of vintage. The living area with pot belly stove and french doors leading to the sheltered private deck with outside fire is full of warmth and imagination. The bathroom has a large bathtub perfect for relaxing away the chillier Wellington nights. Cafes, cinema, beaches and the rugged but beautiful south coast right on the door step. Just ten minute drive to Wellington central.
Guests are welcome to use everything in the house and in the cupboards. You are welcome to any veggies and herbs from the garden.
Island Bay is special for its laid back beach side parks and walks. The south coast has some of New Zealand best walking and mountain biking tracks. The sunsets and sunrise are some of the most spectacular we've found.
Regular buses are available from the bottom of the hill. A taxi ride to the city and to / from the airport will cost between $25 and $35.
Other Things to Note
The house is full of sculpture and art with an extensive library of art and yoga books.
We ask that you love and care for this house as much as we do.
Amy was really helpful in arranging our booking and made some great suggestions about places we might like to go and things we may like to do whilst in Island Bay. The house in Island Bay was perfect for us, it is bright and spacious with great outdoors space and the kitchen is really great for cooking in. The added interest of Max's sculptures only added to the stay. Island Bay is a lovely suburb, not far out from the city centre but with its own cool feel and places to go and amazing views and scenery.
What a stunning home/studio in beautiful Wellington! Amy and Max's place has attention to detail in every aspect, an artful masterpiece filled with love. It is obvious everything in their place has been carefully chosen and Max's sculptures add a wonderful touch. From the roof mounted vintage speakers, to the imaginative lighting features everything was great to look at and had a purpose.
The pictures are an accurate representation, which actually offer much more in person. I loved the staircases that lead up to the lookout at top back corner of the property with the cute hammock and table and chairs with a magical view of Island Bay beach.
Amy was a great host, she went to a lot of effort to make their place avaliable for new years as she was away on holiday and had to arrange the cleaner on short notice. She also checked in regularly by message before our trip and left an informative email with photos to help us on our trip.
Puss the cat was also very friendly and adorable, giving us some welcoming company on our trip.
Thanks for everything Amy, we fell in love with your place, wish it was ours!
Amy was an incredible host…communicative, helpful and full of great tips about what to do and see in the area. Island Bay was the perfect location for our vacation. The house is beautifully situated a few steps away from the water and to the center of Island Bay. The local bus took us into the heart of Wellington in less than 15 minutes. It's hard not to gush about the house itself or the gorgeous artwork throughout the entire place. Amy and Max have done a fantastic job of making this quiet spot a home away from home, filled with wonderful amenities and beautiful touches.
We had a wonderfully relaxing stay at Knoll Street on the lead-up to Christmas. On arrival we received a very kind welcome and considered instructions from Amy and found the house warm, extremely comfortable, fun, light and fully equipped for our needs. It was lovely to be by the sea while being so close to town as well, and on the days we stayed in there was both rain and sun and the house provided delightful spaces to enjoy the different climates. I was sad to leave! Thanks again to Amy.
Dear Amy, we loved the unique house, filled with so many beautiful art (thanks to Max and best regards!) and Puss. The lovely neighbourcat was a highlight as well. Although the weather did not welcome us (lots of heavy rain and storms) we really did appreciate your home with the warming fireplace.

We stayed at Amy's place for a week and loved it. The house is beautiful and fully equipped. The sea is 5 minutes walk and city centre 20 mins by bus or 15 by car, so real easy. Island bay is a lovely neighborhood and the house special. We didn't see Amy much but she was always ready to answer any question, so for us it was the perfect combination of privacy and utility. We would certainly come here again and recommend this house.
What a stunning home and we felt pretty privileged to share it for a short time. It had everything we needed and it's just in a fantastic location. We felt at home immediately, even with the pets!
Amy was just fantastic and was quick to respond and I felt like I was dealing with a friend.
Would highly recommend, even though I don't want the secret out for when we stay again! Thank you Amy and Max :-)
I'm Amy. I'm Irish and living on the south coast of Wellington, New Zealand, with my guy, Max. New Zealand has been home for ten years. Wanderlust all the time but time at home is made special by our beautiful love shack by the sea. The house is unique. Almost everything inside is bespoke, made by the hands and imagination of Max, who is an artist. Outside is a nature haven with a look-out for breakfast at sunrise, a hammock for afternoon lounging, a deck for entertaining or yoga, and an outdoor fire for whiling the evenings away. We love hosting people from all around the globe. So far it has been a total pleasure welcoming guests from Switzerland to Jakarta and lots in between. We hope you will love this house as much as we do.
