About This Listing
West Vista is a small rustic 1930's cabin on the shore of Lake Superior near Marquette, Michigan. The cabin has very few amenities; no telephone or wireless, no indoor toilet, no shower or bath. It has a wood stove for heat and a hand pump for water. This place is well suited as a retreat for an artist, writer or meditator or that someone who really wants to get away and experience the beauty of Lake Superior and northern Michigan.
The layout has one bedroom off the kitchen with a queen size bed and a sleeping space in the loft. There's a small 4 burner electric stove and oven with lots of counter space for preparing meals. The living room and dining area are combined with an efficient wood burning stove.
There are several miles of white quartz sand beach going east and west from the cabin with resident bald eagles which often can be seen flying along the coast or perched in a giant white pine. If one stays up late enough, the northern lights can be viewed over Lake Superior from the deck.
Marquette is the closest city which has many festivals during the summer, miles of biking trails, good restaurants and craft breweries. Munising is nearby with the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore which should not be missed.
We love this little cabin and only expect you to leave it in the condition it was in upon arrival. The wood stove is efficient, so it does not need to be completely packed with wood. It works very well to feed the fire throughout the evening on the cooler days. Guests who stay for extended periods can leave garbage in the small shed, which I will pick up when you leave. We have a no pet policy.
We had a wonderful time at Mark's cabin. It is rustic, vintage, and stocked with anything you could possibly need. A sackful of groceries and suitcase and you are set. The view is fabulous and even though there was neighbors near, there was trees between us and we felt secluded and had a large private shoreline to ourselves. The pictures are accurate; as his the owner's description. There is a chamber pot in addition to the outhouse. As long as you are ok with this, you will be fine. We battled mosquitoes but kept them at bay, once we realize the owner had bug spray available. This vintage decorated cabin was exactly what we were looking for and was perfect for a couple looking to get away from modern lifestyle. There was a radio, coffee pot, and outdoor grill available. An indoor bathroom is the only thing that would have made our stay more enjoyable; however, we went into our visit knowing there was only an outdoor bathroom. Mark was available for a minor question we had and kept in touch via text an e-mail and text. We really enjoyed our stay and would return without question. Mark has thought of everything from kitchenware, spices, coffee, tea, extra kleenex, games, and towels. The view was amazing!
Cabin was quiet, beautiful and relaxing. The pictures don't do the view right from the window justice.
Mark was helpful and gave us everything we needed for a great weekend.
Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer. We've already recommended it to many of our friends and family
Mark was a great host. My fiancé and I were looking to get away and enjoy nature and we got exactly what we were looking for. The cabin was extremely clean and comfortable with wood ready for a fire upon our arrival. The cabin was larger than expected and the outhouse was clean and comfortable. Having never stayed in a cabin before we had several reservations but I assure you we had a wonderful experience and can't wait to go back. The view of the sun rise/set and the calm of the water after a storm made the trip more than worth the price we paid. We spent hours walking the beach collecting driftwood and enjoying the feeling of the sand between our toes. Meals were easy to prepare in the spacious kitchen while listening to sports on the radio.
The cabin was even better than we anticipated! Mark was great to work with and his cabin had every amenity we needed for our weekend getaway. We took advantage of the games at night and the beautiful beach during the day. Marquette is a lovely town and offered us a great introduction to Michigan. Would love to come back and stay again in the future. We'll come better equipped for the mosquitos next time. ;) Highly recommend Marks' cabin!
This cabin was the perfect getaway from the city for me. Wonderfully cozy and full of charm, it's a quick drive to Marquette, Painted Rocks, Sugarloaf Mountain, and I'm sure much more that I didn't get a chance to explore. The bed was comfortable, the fire toasty, and the stargazing divine. Highly recommended.
About the Host, Mark
I'm retired from the Fish & Wildlife Service after living and working in California for 25 years. I moved back to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where I was born to spend time with family. I love being back in the northwoods where I spend most of my time hiking, fishing and x-country skiing.
