The Space

The Hale Pili La`au (House at Forest Edge) is perfect for “talking story” after exploring the natural beauty of the Big Island. Located in Nanawale Estates, it is central to our community pool which you may use during your stay (two blocks away), black sand beaches, dining and shopping in nearby Pahoa Village, natural hot baths, and volcano viewing. This brand new home is surrounded by the Nanawale Forest Reserve. Your stay will be informative and relaxing as you enjoy the many comforts of this special home in our special place called Puna. Use it as a base to explore the entire east side of the island! Bus schedules will be available in your room as well as maps to local attractions and various brochures.
The house has open-beam ceilings throughout with beautifully finished pine wood, tile flooring in the living and dining areas, and wood floors in the bedrooms. Granite and marble countertops adorn both kitchen and bathrooms. The rental bedroom has a very comfortable twin bed and an astronomy-themed décor, highlighting the fact that the Big Island is the premier place in the world for astronomy. The private bathroom, for your use only, is just outside the room. The office is appointed with two glass-topped desks and comfortable office chairs just waiting for you and your computer. High speed wireless internet is provided. Netflix and an eclectic DVD library are available for your enjoyment. The kitchen has top-of-the-line appliances with a double-door refrigerator, dishwasher, full/stove with oven, microwave, coffee press, and restaurant-quality blender for drinks and juices. Everything you need for cooking and dining is provided: multiple sets of dishes, wine glasses, pots, pans, etc. Fresh island foods, sold at the local farmer's market, will taste delicious at the oak trestle table with 4 comfy chairs near the bay window in the dining area. After dinner, enjoy a movie or music with drinks and unusual island snacks you discover in Pahoa Town in the cozy living room. If you snagged some fresh island fish, either by hook, or at the local fish market in Pahoa, you can grill it outdoors and enjoy it on the spacious lanai as the sun sets in the West (Komohana). Keep an eye out for the Hawaiian Hawk that frequents this part of the forest reserve. Please note there is also a small kitty named "Keiki Bear" who claims the house as her own, so people with cat allergies would not be comfortable, however cat lovers will meet a very sweet feline.
The house will nurture you and invite you to open the windows and breath in the sweet forest air. You're invited... Come stay at the edge of a magnificent `Ohi`a forest and have a truly Hawaiian experience...

  • Gail is an extremely kind and gracious host. Her home is very warm and welcoming, and she has really thought of just about everything that a visitor to Hawaii would need to be comfortable. She has lived on the Big Island for many years and knows a lot about the area. She also provides a great set of maps and a very recent tour book to help newcomers get around.

I spent three weeks at Gail’s home—a long time to have someone in your space—and I would love to return. She and Derek are such rich resource people for anyone interested in learning more about the local culture of Hilo and Puna. I really appreciated all of their knowledge and generosity. They shared delicious fresh fruits from their home orchards and markets, several that I had never tasted before.

It was a wonderful stay in the rainforest, and I would thoroughly recommend Gail’s listings to all future guests. Mahalo, Gail!

  • Gail was a great host. The BnB is located in the Puna area, minutes away from Pahoa and a short drive to the tide pools. It's also nearby the Lava Tree State Monument and a cute gardens. This area is incredibly lush and definitely worth the visit. Gail was fantastic and drove me to Pahoa one night to pick up fish and chips in Pahoa. She made two great breakfasts and was very accommodating, including letting my use her laundry facilities. I recommend this lovely place in the rainforest with the incredible sound of the Coqui frogs at night!!
