Sleeps 2 (possibly 4- sofa bed downstairs). 1 bedroom, converted gite with sunny stone patio and with views over fruit orchard in the grounds.
Located 1.5km from a village with restaurant, cafe and post office. 7km to both Payzac and Lanouaille villages with supermarkets, banks, boulangeries, restaurants and open air markets. 12km to Rouffiac lake and leisure centre for water skiing, boating or swimming. Visit Pompadour for horse trials and its chateau, Unesco listed prehistoric art caves at Lascaux. Lots of local markets with locally grown produce. Enjoy the night markets with music and food in the local town of Saint-Mesmin.
A charming, converted stone gite in a peaceful fruit orchard in rolling Dordogne countryside. Sunny stone patio with views over fruit orchard, patio dining table and chairs, parasol, 2 sun loungers. There are many lovely spots to eat in the orchard. In season there are cherry, greengage, fig, pear nectarine, peach, and apple trees as well as blackcurrant and other fruit bushes trees. You are welcome to pick and eat the fruit! Mature cedar and chestnut trees. La Petite Maison enjoys privacy in the grounds of the main house.
Fully equipped open plan kitchen with original stone walls, double sink drainer, gas cooker with oven, fridge/freezer, washing machine, microwave.
One large high ceiling mezzanine bedroom with one large super- king sized mattress placed on the sea-grass floor, bohemian-style under the rafters. Views onto front garden and large velux roof window. Not suitable for children under three years of age due to the spaces between the bars on the mezzanine and open staircase. However, we have a cot which you can borrow for babies. Please ask for it.
Large open plan living and dining room with convertible king size sofa bed, satellite TV, radio, table and chairs and period sideboard. Books in French and English, games, local maps and brochures. All downstairs and terrace is wheelchair accessible.
All laundry except towels is provided with a cleaning charge of 30 euros (40 euros if more than 2 occupancy) payable direct to the housekeeper at key handover. Please wash all crockery before leaving.
Car essential. Downstairs bathroom with tiled shower. Easy access between garden, patio and living area with extra sleeping accommodation on the ground floor.
Play golf at the 18th century Domaine d'Essendieras (10km) near the fortress town of Excideuil (includes swimming and restaurants and BBQ nights). The beautiful and very popular Rouffiac leisure centre is 12kms away (pedalos, boating, swimming with lifeguard, water skiing, excellent restaurant and snack bar). Entrance is free.
'La Petite Maison' is set in a tiny hamlet of 5-6 houses within 1.5km walk to the pretty village of Savignac-Ledrier with its Chateau and ancient Forge on the picturesque River Auvezere. You can eat out in the excellent and very reasonably priced restaurant here, called Les Forges, and also buy your morning baguette. Horse riding (2km). A 7km drive takes you on to the pleasant larger village of Payzac with a supermarket and a wider choice of restaurants and bars and a bank. The property is ideal for birdwatching, walking the Auvezere Circuit which takes you along the Auvezere river gorge, for river canoeing or water skiing at the Rouffiac Lake or simply relaxing on a lounger in the large garden. There is a wealth local markets within a few kilometres, Objat on a Sunday morning and Excideuil markets on Thursday are popular. Slightly further afield is the medieval town of Terrasson-Lavilledieu with its picturesque market on the bridge and banks of the river on Thursday mornings- spectacular views too on the trip over! Popular with our guests is the Domaine d'Essendieras (8km) an impressive 18 century estate with BBQ nights to live accordion music in the grounds, golf and swimming, as well as dining in fabulous surroundings at reasonable prices (from 14 euros). Visit the beautifully laid out gardens of Hautefort Chateau (20km).Over the border in the department of Correze is Pomadour where you can visit France's national stud farm, horse races and the chateau of Madame de Pompadour. The delightful town of St Yrieix (15 km) with its summer night market, is where the fine kaolin clay for Limoges porcelain was discovered. Visit the fascinating porcelain museum and don't miss the 12th century illuminated Bible (one of only three in France) in the library. The lively 'truffle city' of Perigueux (50km) is one of France's gastronomic centres.
You can sit anywhere you like in the garden. The grounds are shared with the house next door but there is plenty of room for everyone.

Michele teaches French and English and organises French residential courses for all levels at our house in France
David and Michele are both Francophiles and have lived in France a collective 10 years. When not in Cambridge, we run intensive French residential courses in our house, 'Le Verger' (Dordogne) and its converted gite in the grounds, 'La Porcherie' (The Piggery). Both enthusastic teachers, our courses give all our students a massive confidence boost in French at beginner, GCSE and A level French. Our new course : French for living and holidays.
David is a writer and teaches creative writing.
