Our Mayor touts this neighborhood the HBO series "Girls" live in this neighborhood and Urban Outfitters deemed it so worthy they have a jersey with "Bushwick" on it.
For the real New York you have to spend some time in Brooklyn. Eat at a local "cuchifritos" or any of the new eateries/bars in this hip neighborhood. This is an emerging neighborhood and so many new cute places have opened and are under way. I have a book here with a local walking map and pin for many of the local eateries.
15 minutes on the subway, which is two short blocks away, will get you to the Lower East Side in Manhattan ( my favorite neighborhood hands down). for Midtown Manhattan add another 12 minutes.

I'm new to this neighborhood and it is changing rapidly, so still a mix of longtime residents and newer gentrification in progress. As is most of Brooklyn it is block to block the waves of great restored and well kept homes to the next block looking like the background of a Scorsese film. But that is what everyone (me included) love about Brooklyn. Defintely safe but a mix bag aesthetically.
I love that the subway is 2 blocks away and most of the time it runs express so getting to Manhattan is EASY and FAST. 4 stops during prime time 7 stops off peak.
There are two supermarkets within a block or two. there is a 24 hour Rite Aide (sundries, pharmacy, grocery etc).
Fluff and fold Laundry mat one block away.
walking distance to great cafes and restaurants.
J train is accessible two blocks away on Broadway and Halsey. You can take that to Manhattan and directly to JFK airport. You can also transfer to many of the other subway lines from this line.
B26 busline runs on Halsey going into queens or into downtown Brooklyn (Barclay center)
Walking distance to the L train and 2 stops away to the ACE train. so many options for getting around.
if you are here to sight see and are staying 3 or more days it will probably save you a ton to just by the weekly pass. at 2.75 a trip if you are getting off and on the subways several times a day it really adds up. Plus once you have the unlimited you are free to explore! Unlimited MTA is good on subway and bus.
