Wow! Our family just returned home after a great week in Maine, highlighted by our fantastic experience at Marion's Cottage! The cottage is even better than described, clean, open floor plan, and the perfect size for a family with two adults, two children and two Labrador retrievers. The grounds offer great opportunities to explore and the beach is just a short walk away to catch the morning sunrise. Accessible to both Freeport and Yarmouth in minutes, and only 20 minutes to downtown Portland, this is a great launching point for many day trips. Marion and Corky were fabulous hosts, both from the local treats upon arrival, and their hospitality during the course of our stay. We'll be back annually and Marion's Cottage will be part of the draw!
Marion went above and beyond to make our stay fantastic. She contacted me and gave me a 2-3 page writeup of things to do in the surrounding area before we arrived. We walked into the cabin to find a gift basket with wine/bread/jam which was so sweet of her.
The home is beautiful and the town of Freeport is great for shopping and very centrally located if you feel like venturing out into neighboring areas.
Beautiful views and fantastic host. I would highly recommend staying at Marions cabin.
Very nice and relaxing stay in the most beautiful cottage imaginable in the Maine coast. Easy access to Freeport and amenities, as well as further inland for great outdoors. We have had a terrific time!
We loved staying in this cottage! It provided a terrific balance of location, water access (we have a boat), tranquil beauty, and hospitality for our family of 4 (two kids, 9 and 12). As others have mentioned, our hosts were exceptional - they were genuinely caring and responsive to our needs and requests, providing us with fresh items from the farmers market when we arrived, dropping off salt and pepper when we ran out, allowing us to use their canoe to get out to our boat on their mooring, keeping their dogs close when needed (they tend to roam from the adjacent owners' home to the cottage). The Arts and Crafts style cottage - really a small home - is gorgeous, designed to maximize common areas and well appointed. Bedrooms are small, but very comfortable, though due to the open plan sound does travel easily. For boaters: the dock is only accessible plus or minus about 2.5 hours of high tide, the rest of the tide the area is a big flat. The mooring however has deep water throughout, and Brewers Marina (about a mile away) does have transient slips and parking, which we used on days where the tide didn't cooperate with our plans. Casco bay is beautiful and offers lots of options for boaters who want to explore islands (become a MITA member for exclusive info on private water access). We are already planning a return trip!
We just spent a wonderful week at the Freeport Cottage. Off the main road and surrounded by tall trees, the setting was peaceful and private, with a wall of windows perfectly framing the landscape. At the same time, Freeport was only moments away - lobster pounds, shopping, Maine Beer Company - and a small sandy beach down the street. The Cottage fit two adults, two children and our small dog comfortably. Marion surprised us with a basket of goodies from the Farmer's Market and essentials stocked in the fridge. The kids loved going out on the boat with our hosts who were so friendly and welcoming. Highest recommendation!
Our stay at this Freeport Cottage was great. Marion made us feel very welcomed and even left us some food and wine in the refrigerator. She was also helpful with recommendations for restaurants and activities nearby. The Cottage is clean and comfortable and, as others have said, as good as the pictures if not better. The property is beautiful and secluded yet close to everything and it was great to be able to bring our dog with us on vacation.
The views are fabulous and there is water access with permission as described but it does require going through the yard of the hosts and very close to their home. Marion gave us permission to access the water for paddle boarding but we did feel as though we were intruding by going back and forth from the cottage to the water.
There is a small public water access (Sandy Beach) within walking distance which we used for swimming however it is far to carry paddle boards or kayaks to that location.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay and recommend this cottage as a nice retreat in a beautiful location.
Everything about our weekend stay at Marion's Freeport Waterfront Cottage was magical. It exceeded our lofty expectations by leaps and bounds.
Marion greeted us upon arrival with warmth and hospitality, as did her two golden labs. The cottage is exquisitely designed with a 30-foot cathedral ceiling in the living room and two-stories of windows that face the waterfront. The entire cottage is immaculate and yet warm and cozy. Marion generously stocked the fridge with some essentials and lest some much-appreciated wine and jam for us as well. We felt at home immediately.
There were so many added bonuses to our stay. Just a tour around Marion's exquisite garden was treat enough. I came away with so many inspired ideas for what might look good in my garden back home.
The cottage is located about two miles from all the shopping in Freeport and yet you feel blissfully removed from that activity in this oasis nestled in the woods. If there was the option to award more than five stars I would do it.
About the Host, Marion
My husband and I have lived in Maine for 20 years, built two homes on our property in South Freeport along the Harraseeket River. We love the outdoors, and love to travel. We have a warm and inviting home, and 12 acres of beautiful woods along the water. We have always owned dogs, and currently live and travel with our two labs. In the winter, we travel to Boca Grande FL to chase the sun and warmth. But we always miss our home in Maine. Other favorite destinations: St.Andrews NB Canada, Desbarats, Ontario Canada.
