We had a fantastic time at Bob's place. He picked us up from the middle of the city during rush hour and provided us with maps and useful information. Throughout our stay, he frequently checked in with us and made himself available in person and over the phone. He even provided great bicycles for a day trip! We really appreciated his assistance and honesty.
The house is beautiful and comfortable. We loved the large porch and patio, and enjoyed cooking breakfast in the well-equipped and tidy outdoor kitchen. The bedroom and bathroom were cozy, clean, and comfortable. Bob regularly provided new clean sheets, toilet paper, and soap. The house was secure and the internet was speedy. We felt very much at home. Construction began each day at nine, but it didn't bother us and is scheduled to be completed soon.
Although the property was a bit further away from the city than we had expected, we enjoyed the yellow truck ride and loved the small, inexpensive restaurants up the street. Bob's dogs are lovely and friendly. We miss them! Some of the other neighborhood dogs are a bit scary but harmless. (One evening, Bob and his daughter went above and beyond, escorting us past a neighborhood dog who seemed intimidating.)
We stayed for ten days and wished we could have stayed longer. We wholeheartedly recommend Bob's place! There are multiple beautiful guesthouses on his property, so if one is full, just look for one of his different listings.
Bob could not have been a better host. The house was perfect - and only a 10 minute walk to our classes with Pichest! We loved it. It was quiet; the dogs were wonderfully friendly; anything we needed all we had to do was ask Bob! There was universal confusion about how late the yellow tsung-taeows ran - so some evenings we had to take a tuk-tuk (the grand expense was 300b or approximately $10). There is a nice western style grocery nearby, in addition to a normal market and lots of resturants. We also met some wonderful fellow-guests while we were there. There were lots of adventures to be had. Sadly, one of the other guests gave Bob a crappy review - and as is sometime the case they simply wanted to not take responsibility for their own wierdness. sad.
In any event, we look forward to returning to Bob's again when we return next year.
We had such a great time from beginning to end at Bob's place. Our guesthouse was beautiful and clean right in the trees just as pictured!
He told us how to get to the city center (a short and VERY inexpensive and fun ride) and we enjoyed taking it 5 times in our 2 days there.
He has some cute puppies that were always there to welcome us home which we loved! The house is walking distance to a 7/11 for all your personal needs and 2 minute walk from some great restaurant and a small market.
He gave us a map, told us how to get anywhere we needed and even setup a tour for us to go to the tiger kingdom and Doi Suthep. We had an amazing time and if we ever come back, definitely will look him up again! Stay with Bob!!!
Bob was a wonderful host and very hospitable. Though his place is a bit a way out from the main Chiang Mai square, he is willing to assist with your transport and will recommend local transport as well.
The "yellow truck" that will take you in does legitimately end service to his area from the square at 8pm, so be sure to catch it if you don't want to deal with a beyond unpleasant commute on a tuk tuk.
The place itself is just as pictured. We weren't fans of the bathroom/shower situation, but it got us clean. It didn't seem very clean upon our arrival, but after learning that Bob is basically a one-man show, we empathized.
His dogs are beyond sweet, though the other neighborhood dogs could be a bit intimidating when walking through when coming home for the night. Be mindful.
The restaurant with the blue chairs around the corner is yummy! Check it out.
Overall, it was a nice stay, but a bit loud. Between the dogs and the rooster, be prepared to be awake early.
Big thanks to Bob for having us!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed staying at the teak house recently. A comfortable house with all the necessities, excellent value for 2 people. Bob was extremely attentive and went out of his way several times to help us with transportation and explaining how to get around/what to expect while in Thailand. We had loads of questions and he was very patient and always made time for us. We appreciated the many conversations, tips and companionship given to us from Bob, his beautiful daughter, and the dogs! We would not recommend for someone who is fearful of dogs to stay outside of a large resort type hotel while visiting Thailand since there are dogs roaming freely everywhere we have visited so far-family pets and strays. The neighborhood felt very safe and we found everyone we encountered to be friendly, respectful and very patient with a couple of wide-eyed Canucks! Thanks again Bob!!
Bob was a fantastic host and truly made us feel home! He has a lovely home that is away from the hustle and bustle of the city yet close enough (15 mins) from all the action! We loved out forays into the country roads on a bike and our promptu stopovers at streams and rivers! From keeping the room squeaky clean, to helping us with routes and directions to seeing us off at the airport, he was always there and I have seen very few hosts who are this warm! Come to india bob! We owe u a lot:) cheers!!
Bob was an absolutely awesome host. Some of our best experiences in Chiang Mia were organised by him. We felt privileged to accompany him and his lovely daughter Nina to visit her grandmother who lives in an almost untouched traditional Thai village.
In terms of the surrounding area, there are plenty of great restaurants, as well as, a convenience store and coffee place just up the road.
To get into Chiang Mai you can take the yellow buses (Songthaew) at a cost of 20Baht per person and they will drop you off at one of the gates to the old city. These buses run until about 6pm so if you visit the night market you will need to grab a red bus or tuk-tuk. We paid about 400-500Baht to get back.
If you are looking for a place close to the city then you should probably give this a miss as it is about a 20minute trip, however if you would like a great cultural experience outside the hustle and bustle of Chiang Mai then I think it would be hard to do better than Bob's place.
