The Space

Sunshine Cottage is located across the street from Kehena Black Sand Beach on The Big Island of Hawaii. You should see the amazing view from our lanai! This is the place for water lovers and those who appreciate the natural beauty that Hawaii has to offer.

This ocean front cottage is the PERFECT spot to visit Volcanoes National Park - home of Kilauea and the periodic lava flows just a short distance away. We have Hawaiian jungles, tropical rain forests, beautiful coastal views, geothermically heated ponds, snorkeling, whale watching w/ dolphins that migrate to the warm Hawaiian waters from Alaska. During the winter months, you can often see whales out in the water from our lanai just several yards off beautiful coast - in the Kehena Beach area. Many of my tenants tell me that they were able to swim w/ the dolphins as well - and you can too at the world famous 'Kehena Black Sand Beach' !

Did you know that the best and safest snorkeling area is just down the road in the Kapoho Tide pools? You can easily navigate all of these places from our chalet iatKehena Beach, it has come to be a very popular spot 'right in the center of all of these attractions'.
This comfortable, high ceiling cottage has 1 bedroom, full bath, living/dining area w/ 'food prep area' (induction hotplate/ full sized fridge/microwave/blender/coffee w/ coffee maker - 'dish sink' is in utility room and a Hawaiian rock BBQ w/ utensils outside etc...), WifI internet, Direct TV, landline.
It has a queen bed, but can sleep 3 possibly 4 w/ Futon or/and couch.

For those of you who are seeking night time entertainment, check out 'Uncles Outdoor Hawaii Bar' if you want to sip a beer, listen to live Hawaiian music, eat great food and enjoy a farmers market at the same time.

The Sunshine Cottage is just 8 miles from Pohoiki Point (surfing area) and the famous Kapoho snorkeling waters are also near by and remain popular snorkeling, surfing and swimming areas. Compare our rates to those in Kapoho - you will love our place.

Kilauea Volcano is just a 45-60 minute drive where you can walk through Thurstons Lava Tube and look in to Kilauea Caldera.

If you are interested in Yoga, our cottages are located between the two yoga centers in this area at a great rate.

You will love our Sunshine Cottage at Kehena Beach in the Puna District of Hawaii!

  • We had a great time at the cottage. The place was as described by several of the other positive reviewers. However, one amenity that was missing from the description was parking. We were able to park our rental car right next to the front door steps. It was great for visiting the beach and nearby sights. Make sure you bring bug repellent for the mosquitos in this area, we came prepared but still got a couple of bites, nothing you can really do about it though. Andre was very welcoming and pleasant to talk to. I would recommend this place to friends and family.

  • The cottage and the community were exactly as described and pictured. Andre was very responsive and met us at the cottage when we arrived to show us around the property and to introduce us to the community. We loved sitting on the balcony, overlooking the ocean and listening to frogs at night. It truly is a remote area, and we knew that! Want to get away, but still be able to enjoy the island's best attractions? This is it!!

  • The cottage was very nice. If you're looking to really get away from the hustle and bustle of your daily city life, this is definitely a place you should go. The area feels pretty remote, but I guess that's the point. Don't stay here expecting you can walk a block to shop or find trendy restaurants. The closest restaurant is a few miles away. This place is for people looking to experience Hawaii away from the tourist traps. Hilo is about a 45-minute drive and the volcanoes park is about as far.

The (clothing optional) black sand beach across the street is pretty amazing as well. I wish we had more time to spend at this cottage. We would definitely consider staying at Susan and Andre's cottage the next time we go to Big Island!

  • Beautiful place to stay, across the street from oceanfront, and cottage is very well built and maintained. We had a terrific relationship with Andre who took care of everything and made it seem like a month flew by in paradise!

  • Kehena beach location was good location, a little off-beat, but nice location, and great views. The county lava viewing spot is only minutes away, but alas no lava was flowing when we visited.

Andrei was an excellent host. He was gracious enough to accept us even though we were arriving late, and helped us find the place when we arrived (GPS addresses are only accurate to within a few hundred yards in this area). He gave us quite a few pointers on the places to visit around there. My wife had left some earrings on the bed when we left. They promptly informed us, and shipped it back to the mainland for us. It was there the day after we got back!

The house was clean and well maintained, with all necessary furnishings. Couple of minor caveats: there is no running water in the kitchen, and whoever's doing the housekeeping for them forgot to check some of the soaps.

Overall fantastic experience. Beats the hell out of staying at a hotel, and much quicker than renting via (website hidden).

    Great hosts, definitely recommended.

  • We had a wonderful time at the chalet! The close proximity to the black sand beach and beautiful ocean views right from the lanai were awesome! We were even fortunate enough to experience the raw force of nature as tropical storm Flossie passed by, very exciting! The sun was shining the day before the storm and came out again the day after. The chalet was very clean and perfect for the two of us.
