Amazing and beautifully renovated Regency home, with 1/3 acre garden which can accommodate guests as well as the family or bridal party staying in the house. Easy access to London (35 minutes) and a short drive (45 minutes) to Cambridge. During Covid-19 obviously we are unable to accept bookings for the full capacity of the house and garden.

The space
Please note: obviously large weddings and events are not allowed at the current time because of Covid-19, so the "events allowed" facility is disabled.

If you are looking for a intensely personal wedding reception, with all the intimacy and individuality of a real home, you may have found your Paradise... Built in 1825, Observatory House is named after the astronomer, Captain William Smyth, who built what was then the largest observatory in England, in our garden. We have a third of an acre garden (large enough to seat 150 comfortably; you can feed more with a buffet) recently planted with a rose and clematis walkway carefully planned to be in keeping with the Regency period. There is also a pool for cooling off, and a hen and bee orchard beyond. In the house there are plenty of bedrooms to accommodate your parents, family and bridesmaids, and a stunning forty foot dining-and-drawing room, perhaps for dinner the night before your special day.
Because we only accept one or two weddings on our premises each year we are not licensed for the marriage itself. Bedford Town Hall is within easy walking distance, and if you want a blessing ceremony in our garden afterwards to mark your vows, there are no legal restrictions on the form you want it to take so you can do anything you wish!

Guest access
Please note that there is a day-charge of £9 for each guest not staying overnight. This includes a free glass of Prosecco, use of toilets and a few flowers and other little extras.
You will have the full use of our garden, kitchen and reception rooms (and bathrooms for your guests) and any bedrooms agreed in advance.

Other things to note
Please note that this is a residential area and noise disturbance must cease at 11pm.

Site visits can be arranged at a cost of £30, deductible from your booking fee.

I am a novelist, writer and broadcaster. My husband Shaun is an Anglican clergyman and we have five children. Having been brought up in a head master's house and brought up our family in a working Vicarage, I am very used to sharing our home and love to see it used and full of interesting people. Our home is never dull, and never empty...
