The Space

A private exterior staircase takes you up to The Coconut Lanai. The breezes off the Kalapana Coast rustle through the coconut tree canopy that surrounds this airy upstairs apartment. Seven sets of sliding glass doors and a walk-around covered lanai encircling the entire apartment and provide the open and verdant feeling of a tree house. The manager and local artist, Heather Wilkinson, lives downstairs in this two-story house in Seaview Kalapana Estates with her wily cat Mr. Undertoes. Heather will be your source for how to get the most out of your stay on the Puna (east side) of the Big Island of Hawaii.
Your unit accommodates two persons and consists of a living room, dining area and kitchen in an open floor plan. The large bathroom and a bedroom with a queen size bed both open onto the lanai. The living room has a full size fold-out sofa bed and a partial ocean view. The kitchen, which is fully equipped, has a microwave oven, gas stove, new refrigerator and a dishwasher. The unit has complimentary wireless internet. Parking is available on the street. Coin-operated washer and dryer are located downstairs at the foot of your staircase. But you may prefer to dry your clothes on your breezy lanai clothesline. The atmosphere here in Puna is totally laid back, friendly, and in tune with Nature.
A local Saturday market with the island's freshest produce is within walking distance. On Wednesday evenings another local market in Kalapana welcomes the community with dinner sold by a couple dozen food vendors and live Hawaiian music. Kahena Black Sand Beach is only a three minute drive from the Coconut Lanai, and many great attractions including flowing lava, warm ponds , snorkeling, surfing, and steam bathing are within easy driving distance down the Red Dirt Road, which is actually paved now. • We stayed here for a whole week and it was wonderful! Great spacious apartment with everything we needed. It's really close to the beach which was awesome! House is in a great little neighborhood right on the ocean. Heather was very nice and accommodating! Overall great experience at the Coconut Lanai!

  • Coconut Lanai Was A Great Place To Stay And HeatherAn Excellent Hostess. We Plan To Return For A Longer Stay If We Can. It Was Quiet Except For The Coqui Frogs And The Gekos At Night We Loved it.

  • This is a great place for the price, it is big with a balcony all around. You can see the sea through the coconut trees and it is a very quiet neighbouhood. Well equiped kitchen, a lot of light and the sound of the frogs at night...almost paradise ! Heather is really nice, it is a great spot if you want to explore the volcano and the north shore.

  • Heather's suite was very open, bright and spacious. Heather's artworks and book collection made it feel very homey. We had more than enough room inside, and lots of lanai space to enjoy the sunrises outside. We even got used to the frogs at night! The home is located in a semi-rural subdivision, with a few nearby neighbours, and a feeling of safety and community. We liked having a carport to park under. The surroundings are very pretty and we were happy to find a few secluded beaches within a few minutes of driving. The weather was beautiful and warm, not rainy as expected. We truly enjoyed our stay.

  • I stayed in the unit for 7 nights. Initially I wondered if it was too far out, but it worked out fine for relaxing and seeing sights. Heather was helpful and available and made checking in and out easy. We really appreciated the space which was as pictured in the photos, particularly the wrap-around lanai. Everything was clean and well maintained. I would stay here again if in Pahoa and would recommend the space highly.

  • The Coconut Lanai was great! So much space for just the two of us. It was nice having a full kitchen to cook in and a lanai to watch sunset/sunrise from. Everything was clean and comfortable.
Because the Coconut Lanai was such a long drive from Kona, we spent 6 days on the Big Island exploring the Hilo side and all of the magical spots along the Red Road. We were able to walk to a beautiful black sand beach (nude) and there was snorkeling and warm ponds to soak in within a 20min drive from Heather's place.
If you want peace and quite and amazing views of lava fields stretching to the ocean, the Coconut Lanai is perfect. If you want a home base for exploring the rest of the island, realize that the Coconut Lanai is at the end of the road and you will be driving that road a lot.
Heather was a good host and her place is awesome. It was just what we were looking for.

  • Shortly before leaving to visit my daughter over Thanksgiving, we learned we would have to share her living quarters with other visitors and I decided we needed another place to stay. We rented Heather's Coconut Lanai for six nights and were delighted with the spacious, light, breezy apartment on the second floor of Heather's home. It was a total pleasure to spend time there and very convenient to beach amenities like the tide pools, hot pond, beaches and Kalani. Heather was very helpful -even lent us some snorkeling masks. Although voices did carry from the other residences, everyone was respectful in terms of voice level and there were no late night problems. Opening the sliding doors thaat were all around the apartment let the breezes through and we throroughly enjoyed the time we spent there in the mornings and resting between our activities.

  • Our stay in the coconut lanai was very enjoyable. We came to Hawaii for our honeymoon but we didn't want to spend the whole time in resorts, so this quiet, relaxing apartment was perfect for us. We spent 3 nights, and adventured out most of the days, hitting most of the interesting places around this area. It is pretty remote so you need to plan out your adventures or you might end up driving around all day- also not a bad way to spend time, it is all very scenic. Anyway, back to the apartment, we had everything we needed to cook and relax. Having all of the sliding glass doors open means you can enjoy the breeze, hear and smell the rain, and of course feel like you are conducting a chorus of frogs. Wifi is great for planning out your day but not really enough to stream video.

  • The place was well situated for our needs. It was clean, very pretty views, nice trade winds and everything that we needed was there for us to stay and cook for the month. Heather was very helpful and friendly. There was wifi and a washer and dryer downstairs. We had to get our own water for drinking. Heather supplied two 5 gallon containers for that and we got in the fun habit of getting water regularly. Catchment water is the norm in the neighborhood. Cell phones don't work there, but a short 2 minute drive to the seashore was the closest place to get some cell coverage. Heather had a landline in her apt. I think a land line in our place would have come in handy. I would stay there again and again. It was so relaxing. On Wednesdays there was an open air market called Space. It was a pleasant ten minute walk from the Coconut Lanai. There was music, exotic fruits and veggies, yummy foods both raw and cooked. There were hand made crafts, massage and clothes for sale and once a month a flea market. It had a fun carnival feel to it. The apt also had some beautiful art painted by Heather on the walls. The apt was pleasing to the eye. I hope we can go back again.
