Feeling Adventurous? Want to see history in the making; new real estate forming? At this very moment a slow moving river of Lava is moving through Pahoa Village, effectively cutting it in half. We are safely out of it's path, 16 miles away.
A private exterior staircase takes you up to The Coconut Lanai. The breezes off the Kalapana Coast rustle through the coconut tree canopy that surrounds this airy upstairs apartment. Seven sets of sliding glass doors and a walk-around covered lanai encircling the entire apartment and provide the open and verdant feeling of a tree house. The manager and local artist, Heather Wilkinson, lives downstairs in this two-story house in Seaview Kalapana Estates with her wily cat Mr. Undertoes. Heather will be your source for how to get the most out of your stay on the Puna (east side) of the Big Island of Hawaii.
Your unit accommodates two persons and consists of a living room, dining area and kitchen in an open floor plan. The large bathroom and a bedroom with a queen size bed both open onto the lanai. The living room has a full size fold-out sofa bed and a partial ocean view. The kitchen, which is fully equipped, has a microwave oven, gas stove, new refrigerator and a dishwasher. The unit has complimentary wireless internet. We have a brand new state of the art water filtration system so you can drink the rainwater out of the faucets. We have very recently converted the entire house to Solar Power. Parking is available on the street. We have a coin-operated washing machine but currently the dryer is not hooked up while we convert to propane. There are many clothes lines available for drying clothes. The atmosphere here in Puna is totally laid back, friendly, and in tune with Nature.
There are locals markets Wednesday night and Saturday morning 10 minutes down the road at Uncle Roberts Kava Bar. Kahena Black Sand Beach is only a three minute drive from the Coconut Lanai, and many great attractions including flowing lava, warm ponds , snorkeling, surfing, and steam bathing are within easy driving distance down the Red Dirt Road, which is actually paved now. Heather and Mr. Undertoes invite you to experience a unique lifestyle in Seaview Kalapana Estates.

Heather made us feel welcome right when we got there. We got in late at night and she had all the lights on for us to find the place. The place was exactly as described in the post. It was very clean, and comfortable. If we had a problem with anything, she was there to help us out. I would highly recommend staying here. Hope to visit again someday.
We loved the Coconut Lanai. It's so peaceful and quiet, and the wrap-around lanai means cool breezes even in the hottest part of the day. It's really close to the black sand beach, the hot pools, and to the beautiful lower Puna coast which is currently swarming with whales and dolphins. Heather was really welcoming and responsive and the house had absolutely everything we needed and more. (Wish I'd taken advantage of the beach shoes she provided when I went down to the rocky shore!). We loved seeing Heather's artwork everywhere and even ordered some for ourselves. There's even a sofabed when a relative stayed over one night. Perfect in every way.
Fantastic place to stay! We only booked three nights but could have easily stayed a week or even much longer. The space is super clean, light, well-stocked and very comfortable. The wrap-around porch was a great amenity as well. The location was ideal for exploring the southern and eastern parts of the island.
Pro tip: download Heather's driving directions before you leave cell phone range in Pahoa! We arrived late at night and had no signal by the time we arrived at Seaview.
Heather was a wonderful host, and the Coconut Lanai was an incredibly pleasant space for our vacation. We would absolutely stay here on a return trip.
This is definitely a retreat. The wrap around balcony is really nice and on a clear night you see a beautiful blanket of stars. This was a mixed experience for me and my husband. We enjoyed the retreat part but 2 out of 4 days we were there, There was construction, weeding, and beeping almost all day on the adjacent property. As the place is pretty remote and rural, it was difficult to get away for a little bit without it being a production. Area restaurants are mediocre at best but we really enjoyed the farmers market, and the geothermal pool.
Heather greeted us when we arrived and left the lights on for us. This was our 2nd time staying in the Coconut Lanai. She made sure we had everything we needed and was available to help us. The neighborhood was peaceful and quite beautiful. Heathers beautiful artwork was decorating the apartment. This is a comfortable, clean and overall great place to stay. We stayed for a month and would do it again.

I have lived on the Big Island for 7 years now, and have occupied this property in Seaview for three years. I work as a mural artist and create art work that adorns much of my neighbors yards and homes. I enjoy exploring the Big Island, traveling, landscaping, dancing, swimming with dolphins and making art.
