The Space

A private exterior staircase takes you up to The Coconut Lanai. The breezes off the Kalapana Coast rustle through the coconut tree canopy that surrounds this airy upstairs apartment. Seven sets of sliding glass doors and a walk-around covered lanai encircling the entire apartment and provide the open and verdant feeling of a tree house. The manager and local artist, Heather Wilkinson, lives downstairs in this two-story house in Seaview Kalapana Estates with her wily cat Mr. Undertoes. Heather will be your source for how to get the most out of your stay on the Puna (east side) of the Big Island of Hawaii.
Your unit accommodates two persons and consists of a living room, dining area and kitchen in an open floor plan. The large bathroom and a bedroom with a queen size bed both open onto the lanai. The living room has a full size fold-out sofa bed and a partial ocean view. The kitchen, which is fully equipped, has a microwave oven, gas stove, new refrigerator and a dishwasher. The unit has complimentary wireless internet. Parking is available on the street. Coin-operated washer and dryer are located downstairs at the foot of your staircase. But you may prefer to dry your clothes on your breezy lanai clothesline. The atmosphere here in Puna is totally laid back, friendly, and in tune with Nature.
A local Saturday market with the island's freshest produce is within walking distance. On Wednesday evenings another local market in Kalapana welcomes the community with dinner sold by a couple dozen food vendors and live Hawaiian music. Kahena Black Sand Beach is only a three minute drive from the Coconut Lanai, and many great attractions including flowing lava, warm ponds , snorkeling, surfing, and steam bathing are within easy driving distance down the Red Dirt Road, which is actually paved now. Heather and Mr. Undertoes invite you to experience a unique lifestyle in Seaview Kalapana Estates.

  • We stayed here for a whole week and it was wonderful! Great spacious apartment with everything we needed. It's really close to the beach which was awesome! House is in a great little neighborhood right on the ocean. Heather was very nice and accommodating! Overall great experience at the Coconut Lanai!

  • Coconut Lanai Was A Great Place To Stay And HeatherAn Excellent Hostess. We Plan To Return For A Longer Stay If We Can. It Was Quiet Except For The Coqui Frogs And The Gekos At Night We Loved it.

  • This is a great place for the price, it is big with a balcony all around. You can see the sea through the coconut trees and it is a very quiet neighbouhood. Well equiped kitchen, a lot of light and the sound of the frogs at night...almost paradise ! Heather is really nice, it is a great spot if you want to explore the volcano and the north shore.

  • Heather's suite was very open, bright and spacious. Heather's artworks and book collection made it feel very homey. We had more than enough room inside, and lots of lanai space to enjoy the sunrises outside. We even got used to the frogs at night! The home is located in a semi-rural subdivision, with a few nearby neighbours, and a feeling of safety and community. We liked having a carport to park under. The surroundings are very pretty and we were happy to find a few secluded beaches within a few minutes of driving. The weather was beautiful and warm, not rainy as expected. We truly enjoyed our stay.

  • The accommodations are very nice and are exactly as shown in photos. The kitchen is very well stocked with all the utensils needed for making a gourmet meal though the stove is a bit dated. Heather was a very gracious hostess. When the dishwasher broke down, not only did Heather work quickly to replace it, she came and washed our dishes that were in the dishwasher while we were out for the day!!! We spent one month at the Coconut Lanai and had a quiet and peaceful stay. The district is out of cell phone range which made it difficult for us to work from home but the wifi worked no problem. I can't imagine staying here without a car, though. There aren't any services nearby, just ocean. There are no street lights or sidewalks so evening strolls with our little one were out of the question. Which reminds me, if you're arriving after sunset get the cross street from Heather! We trusted (website hidden) maps which took us close but not quite close enough. House numbers are poorly lit and there are no street lights and no way to call the host because there is no cell phone service! Arriving during daylight hours the location is easy enough to find. If you need to be at the centre of it all, this may not be the location for you. But, if you're looking to get away from it all, then I would definitely recommend this place!

  • We had a nice stay at this location. Heather was very helpful and the apartment is exactly as pictured. Definitely a good location to stay if you want to explore the volcanic areas of Big Island.

  • The place is lovely, very clean, bright, spacious and nicely decorated. Heather is so quiet you almost forget she is there, until you need something when she is always ready to help! The area is very quiet too, all you can hear are nature's sounds, lovely! My favourite spot in the house was a corner in the around-the-apartment lanai, where I could read sat in the hammock and every time I raised my eyes I could see the ocean just a block away... We rented a car, made base there and visited many spots on the island (Kona, Mauna Kea, Volcanoes National Park, Papakolea Beach -green sand, as well as some other places nearby). We had a wonderful time in Hawaii and now I understand why so many people fell under the island's spell; I think it caught me, too.
Beware just one thing: do not trust entirely on TomTom, take printed instructions on how to get there just in case because in some parts of the road the GPS seemed to be crazy and wouldn't give precise instructions (which happened only once or twice in all the trip but always when you had to make a decision). It is very easy to reach from Hilo Airport if you know how to!

  • Nice accommodations and spacious too. Very quiet neighborhood, except for the chirping frogs at night. Kind of natures sound machine.

Heather greeted us when we arrived, gave us a brief introduction to the area and her place and we went off exploring.

A good value for a home base to explore this part of the island.

  • Clean, organized, well stocked and pretty place to stay. We had an awesome time so close to the beach, Kalani Retreat, black sand beaches and much, much more. Heather was quiet and gave us our privacy. She has provided pretty much everything you will need on a vacation or stop over on the Big Island. Stay here!

I have lived on the Big Island for 7 years now, and have occupied this property in Seaview for three years. I work as a mural artist and create art work that adorns much of my neighbors yards and homes. I enjoy exploring the Big Island, traveling, landscaping, dancing, swimming with dolphins and making art.
