About this listing

The alleys of Crested Butte reflect the true historic past of this once mining town turned resort village. The cottage has a fabulous location on one of "The Shire's" best alleys only 1 1/2 blocks from downtown but away from any of its noise. The free Mountain Express Shuttle buses are only a block away. Hiking, biking and wildflower trailheads are a 5 minute walk out the front door.Crested Butte is known for its friendliness and I love sharing my amazingly beautiful town.

**PLEASE TAKE NOTE: I have a delightful indoor cat of notoriety named Mr. Gizmo, therefore, other visiting pets are not permitted.

Description

The Space

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT A BED & BREAKFAST, I don't provide food or cook meals for guests. It's a private room in a very small, artfully funky, but enchanting cottage and garden, quite typical of Crested Butte alley houses which were converted from sheds, barns and garages of its historic mining days. The cottage is about 900 sq feet total, and the guest bedroom is small as well, about 10x12 ft, but it does have a queen size bed with end tables on both sides as well as a small dresser and a pine chest top for putting your bags on. The room is suitable for a single or a couple only. The bathroom, kitchen and cottage are shared with me and my cat. ***If you're not comfortable with sharing a small home space with a host and her cat, please book a hotel room instead because we all want to make sure you're happy with your accommodations during your stay in Crested Butte!

I also love to cook so you'll find the kitchen has everything from blenders to crock pots and waffle irons and all the pots, pans and implements you might want. The backyard is tiny but fenced and full of flowers, with a small patio and big ambiance: solar lighting, candles, table /chairs, and a wood burning chiminea.

I want you to have the true Buttian experience of what it's like to be a local in paradise so if you stay with me in the summer you'll have a townie clunker bike for your visit here.

**PLEASE TAKE NOTE: I have a delightful indoor cat of notoriety named Mr. Gizmo, therefore, other visiting pets are not permitted.

Guest Access

Guests have use of shared refrigerator (I won't eat your food!) I provide a coffee set up... I set up the percolator with coffee so all you have to do is plug it in when you get up in the morning. I also provide organic sugar, honey, syrups, farm fresh cream, milk.

Interaction with Guests

Guests SHARE the house, kitchen, bathroom and garden, however, I usually stay out of my guest's way, especially in the mornings, giving them full access to kitchen and bathroom facilities. I'm certainly here to assist you with info and if you indicate, I'll be glad to chat with you about life, the universe and everything ;>) Most likely, I'll wake later than guests as well as get home later at night since I'm an active professional musician and journalist.

The Neighborhood

Crested Butte is a very safe town with practically no crime (people "borrow" bikes when they're too intoxicated to walk home late night from the bars). The streets are dark, especially the alleys and the summer Milky Way is incredible as are the night skies. All you have to be aware of is bears. I have head lamps guests can borrow.

Getting Around

There are airport shuttles from Gunnison Airport, as well as free buses and reservation taxi services. There are also buses from Denver Airport.
You can walk to everywhere in the town of Crested Butte, and there are free shuttle buses to the mountain, the summer lifts, concerts, and winter ski resort. Also, I provide clunker Townie bikes in the summer.

Other Things to Note

In the summer, be forewarned that the bears wander the streets and alleys looking for food and trash. They will break into your car if you leave candy wrappers, drinks or anything that they think smells like food so TAKE ALL FOOD AND WRAPPERS OUT OF YOUR CAR.

Winter brings an entirely different experience as many times, at this altitude, we have to tunnel pathways through the glorious snow to our homes. Since I live on an alley, there are times we all have to move our cars if six or more inches of snow falls and the plows must get through.
Of course, the garden and patio is under snow so there is no backyard access in the winter. The house is very cozy with extra space heaters in the bathroom and the guest room to keep you as toasty as you please!

Other than no smoking tobacco indoors and no pets, the only two rules, and most important rules, are HAVE FUN and DO NOT LET THE CAT OUT (no matter what he tells you...). The neighborhood and cottage are quiet but definitely conducive to your conversations, with or without libations... enjoy the magic of the cottage and Crested Butte.

Crested Butte, Colorado, United States · Member since October 2011

A native of NYC in the 1950s, Clearwater Beach, Florida in the 60s, I headed west to Colorado in 1971, settling in the Gunnison/Crested Butte valley in 72. I'm a published freelance journalist, writer and photographer as well as a vocalist/musician. I write features for the Crested Butte News-Weekly and you'll see my stories and photos in the Crested Butte Magazine as well as other regional publications. I've been dubbed "Fairy Godmother to the Inebriated" since I drove the Mountain Express shuttles for 8 years and more recently the late night taxi. My motto is "No drunk left behind." The truth is, I enjoy taking care of people.

I've been in tourism for decades and have experienced all walks of life from an historic restorationist, arts council and concert creator, tour guide, to restaurant owner and galley girl on a deep sea fishing vessel. I've sung in bands that toured from western mountain towns to all over Asia.

Fully entrenched in Crested Butte culture you'll find me in every parade and celebration of my town as one of the infamous Red Ladies (since 1984), or as a cast member of Vinotok, the Protector Spirit Aviana (Check out the Vinotok festivities through an online search). As most Buttians, I have a verve for life... and the required costume trunks ;>) I have a 72 VW Bug and love being counted among Crested Butte's colorful characters.

I've traveled extensively throughout Asia, SE Asia and Italy and will never lose the wanderlust or the joy of meeting new people. I love hearing other traveler's stories and experiences and look forward to hearing yours.
