Comfortable, private upstairs bedroom with separate entrance in my quirky, historic, super-old house in the Marigny - Bywater. Great bars, coffee shops, restaurants, theater/music venues, cafes, within a block. 4 blocks to Frenchmen Street. 5-minute walk to French Quarter, close to street car. Borrow-able bike!
So this place is reaaaaalllyyyy old. Or at least the front 2 rooms are (the eating area, kitchen, and bath were slapped on later, as the house dates back to when people didn't cook or umm...you know...indoors). My neighbor is into history and architecture and she thinks it was built in the 1860s and that it was a placage house (look it up if you're interested).
That said, it is charming and awesome and I LOVE it, but it's also quirky and not-so-modern. But it more than makes up for that with its charm and location. And I've done my best to provide modern comforts (cold a/c, dishwasher, washer/dryer, etc.), so although it's not the Ritz Carlton, you won't be roughing it, either.

*Additional air conditioner (window unit) in upstairs bedroom - gets nice and cold!

*Separate entrance available if you want to use it
I do live here, and I can help you out with info on all areas of the city (and the surrounding area, if necessary). I work, so I won't be available 24/7, but I'm a text message or phone call away, and have several friends within a few blocks who can help you out in a pinch.
The Marigny is chock-full of bars, cafes, coffee shops, restaurants, quirky shops. My house is just 4 blocks from Frenchmen Street, and a five-minute walk to the French Quarter. But you don't even have to go that far--I live on probably the best (in my humble opinion) block in the neighborhood. On the corner is one of the greatest, oldest neighborhood bars in the city with the nicest patrons and THE BEST Bloody Marys. One block in the other direction is a great coffee shop that's open late and has awesome breakfasts. There are all-night grocery stores with in blocks (and there's a mini-fridge in the room). and around the corner is the New Orleans Food Co-op, which is in the same building as an art bazaar, vintage clothing shop, gym, a couple of restaurants, and a theater space. For real, just look at the map and then look at all the stuff around it. And if none of that appeals to you, it takes me like 5 minutes to walk to the French Quarter or just a couple minutes by bike.
Two blocks from the bus line, which connects to the streetcar line. There's also a cab stand right around the corner. And the neighborhood is very bike friendly--I have an extra bike if you need one.
I do have a (healthy, spayed, up-to-date on shots, well behaved, friendly) dog (Labrador Retriever). She does not go into the upstairs bedroom (and she sleeps in my room downstairs).
Recently, AirBnB-ers have been messaging me to ask if I'll be in the house during such-and-such dates. The answer is ALWAYS yes. I've mentioned it in my ad, but just to reiterate: I live here. I will be here. If I ever do rent out the entire place (I've only done it once, and that was for Jazz Fest), it will be under a separate listing (in the "Entire Home" category), with pictures of my bedroom included.
If you have a well-behaved and housetrained dog, you're welcome to bring him/her. If there's a problem (which would be strange, since my dog is very social and gets along with other dogs), my dog can crash at a friend's place ;)
Wonderful host with great suggestions about what to do and where to eat. She is also conscientious and dependable: she had no problem meeting us, even though our original flight was canceled.
The house has lots of character, but may not be as clean as people with newer digs are used to.
We had a great stay with Jane! My feller and I were in New Orleans to run the marathon, and her place was great--everything we needed, easy communication, flexibility around arrival and checkout, close to good bars and places to eat, and a short lovely walk to and from downtown & the French Quarter. Her dog is a sweetheart, too!
Beautiful neighborhood, authentic old New Orleans home - definitely great for folks looking for an "off-the-beaten-path" experience. Jane is a native, so she can give you excellent recommendations!
Jane's place was perfect in order to do some serious exploration on foot. She was extremely helpful and very friendly. Yes, the house is old (like any house in New Orleans) so don't expect the hot water to last very long or everything to be perfect, but I wouldn't recommend being inside very much anyway, too much to see.
Great location. So convenient and Jane was so helpful! Highly recommended!
Jane is an absolute sweetheart :) Me and my hubby thoroughly enjoyed our stay with her and her precious dog. Very cozy spot with real local flair.
What I really liked about Jane is that you see is what you get and what she tells you is exactly what you get. Her dog is very friendly and her home is historic but very welcoming. I could've stayed longer. Thanks Jane!
Jane was a wonderful host during my short stay in New Orleans. I spent most of my time at the Morial Convention Centre, which was just a 5-10 minute taxi ride away. Jane was welcoming and friendly throughout my stay and was happy to chat with me or suggest places to visit around the city. I really enjoyed my stay and jane provided a far cheaper and friendlier alternative to staying in a hotel.
Jane was a wonderful guide to the city and made sure we knew our way safely around the local area. The room was simple but very comfortable and we were made to feel very much at home. Thanks Jane for being part of a great holiday!
Jane and her adorable dog were great guests. The only con's were the thin walls due to age so if you are a light sleeper beware of the street sounds. We heard five garbage trucks in the morning starting at five a.m. The bed is incredibly firm. Pro? Excellent parking and close to everything.
