The Space

I am pleased and excited to announce that this house has been graced by none other than Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein of Portlandia for a sketch entitled "Rent-It-Out!" More Portlandia photos coming soon...

Private room with Queen size bed in my home near Alberta Arts district. Surrounded by gardens and artistic works, this home is a gallery and gathering space for special events such as concerts, yoga classes, art openings and other happenings. This is the Cully neighborhood with large, sprawling lots full of gardens and mature trees and walking distance to all of the art, food and music you desire on Portland's famous Alberta Street. Near major bus lines and MAX, this town is known for it's simple and efficient public transportation. Our neighborhood has it all though: art galleries, wine bars, sake house, sushi, Thai Food, African food, Ale houses, a plethora of restaurants, music venues, parks, shopping, art and food carts, tea houses, dessert spots, bike rental, bike paths, walking paths, unique local-made clothing/jewelry, vintage second-hand store, theatre, New Season's grocery store offering conscious, organic choices, and a new restaurant opening up just around the corner: Old Salt Marketplace featuring a restaurant, butcher's counter and bar.

The bedroom is spacious with about 180 sq. ft, a queen size bed, other sitting options, good light, bamboo floor, and a shared restroom just a few feet away. The two other rooms in the house are also listed on Airbnb and the house has many common spaces to enjoy such as the living room/gallery, shared kitchen and garden. Here you can expect a peaceful, relaxing stay or getaway. The house is clean, tidy, bright and welcoming and you might just find many pieces of art in the gallery to fall in love with! Currently I am showing ceramics, photographs and paintings. More to come!

I am a ceramic artist and have a studio on-site. Lessons can be arranged by appointment if this interests you during your stay!

The pictured baby grand piano is used by Portland vocalist Jonathan Brinkley to teach voice lessons from time to time. His sessions are playful, inspiring, refreshing, and benefit more than just singing. He is available should you decide you'd like an impromptu lesson!

Guest Access

Your own bedroom, and shared spaces such as kitchen, bathroom, living room, and yard.

Interaction with Guests

I live here and hope to show you around the space. I keep busy with artwork, business and a full-time job, otherwise.

Getting around

Yes! #75 bus can take you to the Hollywood transit center in about 5-7minutes. From there you can take a Max train to anywhere inside or outside of the city. Also, a bike rental shop in in the 'hood. Easy, bike-friendly town!

  • It was a nice and lovely house!

  • After reading all the positive reviews about Jennifer and her "Portlandia" house, I was very disappointed--our stay was nothing like what others described. We never saw Jen during our 3 day/2 night say in Portland; Jen is currently living next door and didn't even stop by to "greet" us as she describes in her listing. We're frequent Airbnb travelers and love the community of hosts we've met--it's one of the reason's we choose Airbnb!--instead of getting to meet someone new, I felt the whole transaction was impersonal.

Just before arriving, Jen's communication also became poor--she didn't respond to my questions and missed important details, like the time I was checking in, and hours after I had arrived and briefly met her partner, she asked me again when I was arriving.

The house was also quite dirty (dust in the room, a dying plant in the corner, and mold in the bathroom).

Jen mentioned when we were booking she was moving to a new house next door with the aim of expanding her Airbnb business and to sell the house we were staying in; while this is certainly a cause to be busy, if she's not able to provide the same quality of Airbnb her reviewers indicate, she shouldn't offer this listing.

    Response from Jennifer:

Jacky, so sorry about your experience! I must respond to all points individually just for the sake of clarity: 1. I thought my communication was thorough with my last email outlining check-in time and what to do in case of early arrival. Unfortunately, your message alerting me that you were here 6 hours before official check-in time did not make it to me until after you were in the house and I was home from work after 4pm. I am disappointed that we missed each other! 2. The plant in the corner is not dying. It's a ficus tree and is thriving. It does drop leaves every day. That is the way of the ficus. 3. I apologize for the dust. Thank you for the reminder. I keep the window open for the summer breezes and it does leave a layer of dust, everyday. It might be good to start communicating with my guests to make sure I can enter and dust daily. 4. Mold in the bathroom. I doubt it. I bleach weekly. Thank you for the heads-up though. I will check the mentioned areas. I'm sorry we missed each other. I was there quite often, just missing you. It's a tricky balance with a busy, transitioning life to meet everyone with their own bustling schedules and a fine balance to honor everyone's privacy. Good luck in your future Airbnb experiences. And thank you for the opportunity to look at what I am doing and improve.

  • Going into our first AirBnB experience, my girlfriend and I didn't know quite what to expect. I am pleased to report that Jennifer and Jonathan are warm, welcoming hosts! The bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen were charming, and their maps of Portland neighborhoods were helpful in planning our days.

We were surprised to learn that there were two other guest rooms in the house, but besides slightly more coordinated showering, this had very little bearing on our (wonderful) experience.

  • Jennifer Was A Great Host. She Was Very Organized, Prompt At Replying To Messages, And She Left A Very Detailed NOte outlining All House Rules And Directions With The Key, So That We Could Let Ourselves In When We Arrived. The House Was Clean And Cute,Though The Bed Was Not The Most Comfortable Or Quite Big Enough For Us 2 small Adults. However, I Loved The Fresh Scent Of Essential Oil In The House And Her Pottery Is Wonderful!

We Never Got To Actually Meet Jennifer Because Our Schedules Didn't Line Up And We Were Out Exploring Portland, But She Made Our Stay Very Easy And nice. And She Has A Really Pretty Yard And Garden!

    Thank You!

  • Place was great, comfortable and relaxing, perfect for a couple. We found it clean, warm and the bed was so comfortable! Really appreciated it after staying in hostels. The place is a bus + light rail ride away from downtown portland but is in a nice quiet suburb.

  • Jennifer and Jonathan are gracious hosts. The room is spacious and the bed comfortable. We connected and had a delightful conversation around music and art

    Response from Jennifer:

    Hello David,

Oh, so sad that you might have been under the impression that breakfast was provided and then it wasn't! I do love to cook on occasion, but it is not something I offer as an amenity. Some folks do and that is such a fine service to offer. I hope to offer more through my airbnb service someday soon too. When you book a reservation, or are perusing different listings, there are three tabs of information: Description, Amenities, and House Rules. Under the Amenities tab you will see all of the details of what is or isn't being offered. That should help you in your future bookings. I certainly enjoyed you and Elizabeth. Both of you are bright, warm and so naturally curious. Thank you for sharing your feedback and questions. warmly, jennifer

  • I got this for my brother's birthday. They had a wonderful time staying here. The hosts were great and they were grateful for the opportunity to enjoy that part of Portland. The deli nearby was great and they would definitely go back again.

  • We had a quick stay in Portland which was made very easy and comfortable by Jennifer and Jonathan. They were extremely welcoming and friendly. A definite recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in/near Portland.

  • My friend and I each got a room (the garden suite and this one) for three nights. Jennifer and Jonathan were warm, welcoming, personable and helpful with many tips. We had a car and we were happy to explore the Northeast and found great places on Alberta St (La Petite Provence) and in the neighbourhood (Old Salt, Extracto Coffee). Driving to downtown and the Southeast were easy. The two dogs are super sweet and mellow, but we both found the first night that we were stuffed up, so if you are sensitive to dog hair or have allergies, this is something to be aware of. Also, there is only one bathroom, shared by guests and the hosts, so we both felt any time we were in there that we needed to hurry out of the bathroom (it was also a house rule to be short in the bathroom). The walls are pretty thin and this room is close to the front door, so for those who are light sleepers, the back garden suite may be preferred (I could hear my friend snore through the wall). They thoughtfully provided ear plugs, which I needed and used. The room is very spacious and also bright, even at night - the thin curtains didn't keep the light out, if you are needing a dark room to sleep in. I prefer hard mattresses to sleep in, so I found the bed softer than I would like, but this is a personal preference. Overall, the house was cozy, cheerful and affordable.

  • If you have been searching through airbnb for a good place to stay in Portland, this might be the listing you should look into booking for your trip.

This property is located only a short drive from the Airport and not to far from the down town area, and most points of interest. If you walk out the front door, down the drive way and just down the street, you will find coffee shops, banks, bars, bakeries, bus routs, pizza shops, coin operated laundry, hand made ice cream parlor, and more. The convenience of this is wonderful as I have found that not every day of a trip can involve driving far off to trails and other areas of Portland. Sometimes you need to just walk around and still be close to where you are staying.

Jennifer has a very positive energy that is reflective in her Art, Personality and Home. If you are a respectable, kind and positive person than this is definitely a home and good home base while visiting Portland.

Make sure to check out Jennifer's pottery which can be a great souvenir from your trip! If available maybe you will want to see if you can set up a Pottery class with Ms. Love. If you bump into a nice man named Jonathan strumming away on a guitar, or teaching voice lessons make sure to spark up a conversation as he is a very positive well traveled guy who adds positive and unique energy to this home. You might be able to set up a voice lesson with him which is pretty cool.

My room was cozy, comfy and charming. I stayed about 6 nights and had no issues what so ever. Basic common sense house rules which anyone would expect and be able to understand help create a great stay for everyone. I spent about 3 hours in the morning and 2 hours at night (excluding sleep of course) in the house each day preparing my daily local travels and adventures. My stay was affordable and unique and I would definitely book again while in the Portland area.

Big thanks to Jennifer and Jonathan for putting a personal touch on my journey and making me part of the home for 6 days. Stuffy impersonal hotels charge an arm and a leg for a stale experience and when your needing a home away from home for a few days, this just space just hits the spot.

About
We are Jennifer Love and Jonathan Brinkley. I am Jennifer from Portland, Oregon via Salt Lake City, Utah. I am a ceramic artist by day and work in a local Southern Italian restaurant in the evenings. I love music and learning about music. I practice yoga, am learning about meditation and love to hike in the forest. I enjoy gardening and am currently harvesting kale and spring greens. One of my life mottos is to work hard and play big. Five things I can't live without: fine dark chocolate, kale, music, dance, and sunshine. My favorite traveling destinations so far are Sicily and Todos Santos, Mexico. Oh, how I love the desert, cactus and the gentle sound of palm trees rustling in the wind! I have a dream to run a large Bed and Breakfast, Hacienda style with warm desert colors, lots of tacos and homemade ice cream! Jonathan is a musician and voice teacher. Together we have traveled all over Europe sharing Jonathan's music via concerts in peoples' living rooms! We love to host and share all of our favorite spots in Portland.
