Hilltop Cottage 2 Miles to D-Town

House - Entire home/apt · Crest Avenue, Austin, TX 78702, United States

The Space

This is a 1920s cottage artistically remodeling to utilize every square inch of its 400 square feet to perfection. Come see how beautiful and efficient it can be to live in a small space. The cottage is set in a beautiful wooded back yard just 2 miles from downtown. The cottage sits on the highest crest in East Austin with a wide view of the valley below. In fact you can see all the way to the airport. This cottage has been remodeled with handmade furniture to artistically utilize every corner of this old house. The Cottage has AC and heat, Queen Tempurpedic Bed, and a Full Service Kitchen with everything you will need to cook for yourself.

The cottage is very secluded and quiet. The trees and songbirds have a way of making you feel you are not in the city. There is a beautiful backyard shower and claw foot bathtub with hot water.

I am a massage therapist and facialist and am happy to offer discounted rates for my guests so just ask. I also offer an herbal bath treatment in the open beauty of the outdoor tub.

There are several restaurants within walking distance. And I am happy to help you with suggestions of great close by restaurants on the east side. The bus line is close by and easy to use. Look up Metro's Go Line for information before going to catch the bus from Crest Ave-my street. There are Car-to-go nearby and I provide rides here and there based on my travels around town.

I have a couple of bicycles you are welcome to borrow. There are bike lanes from my home to downtown which is a 15 minute ride. There is also plenty of space for parking right in front of the house if you have a car or inside the gate if you desire this. This is the best side of town for avoiding traffic both coming and going, easy-in, easy-out.

The cottage is located in a neighborhood of artists, business owners and old neighborhood folks - its in the process of gentrifying which means it is ecomically diverse. Come experience the Austin East Side.

  • The cottage is beautiful and truly peaceful. We felt very comfortable and at home there. The backyard is wonderful (including the outdoor bath!) and we spent quite a bit of time out there. Deborah could not be in town when we were there, but she was very attentive and communicative regardless. I would love to stay here again!

  • We were absolutely blown away by our first Airbnb experience. Deborah has set the bar high, and any hosts we deal with in the future will have to go above and beyond now that we've come to expect this type of service.

We booked Deborah's uber-hip Hilltop Cottage with the intention of using it for an in town lover's nest to get away from the kids. An unexpected AISD snow day wound up turning it into a mini family vacation, and our youngster immediately fell in love with the place and wants to come back again and again.

Deborah was kind enough to meet me at check-in for a brief mini-tour of the facilities. She even took a moment from her busy schedule to serenade me with the Eoiphone acoustic guitar left for the use of guests.

As mentioned by several other guests, the highlight turned out to be the backyard. Stunning views; a roaring blaze using the firewood considerately prepared by Deborah's significant other; and of course the outdoor bathtub. Despite temperatures in the upper 20s for most of our stay, a tub full of steamy, bubbly, bath-salted water proved to be the perfect antidote.

We also enjoyed using the adorable kitchenette. We found plenty of dishes and utensils and cookware tucked away in the cabinets to meet our needs. Bring your own food and you're all set!

We visited the nearby taqueria and found the food cheap and delicious, and we also discovered a Walgreens and a small liquor store only a few blocks away - perfect for our last-minute wining and dining needs.

Another couple occupied the backyard trailer during the early part of our stay. Most folks won't have any issues with the shared bathroom and shower; a little bit of communication goes a long way.

We are already working diligently to clear our schedules for a return visit. For anyone looking for a delightful East Austin experience, we would recommend this attentive host and this perfectly sublime cottage with no hesitation whatsoever. Mega kudos to Deborah!

  • Deborah's home was a real treat. It's in the cool East side neighborhood, close to a lot of cool bars and restaurants. The home is very charming and comfortable, but the outdoor bathtub was our favorite part. It was super relaxing and secluded, even in the middle of the city. Its only about 5 minutes drive into downtown. We will definitely be back!

  • This was my first Airbnb and a wonderful experience.
Deborah is really laid-back, super friendly and helpful.
This place is exactly what I wanted its got a magic feel to it has everything you need topped off with a comfortable bed a great view, an open fire pit and an extra shower and bath outside all 2 miles from down town. I spent 2 weeks here and would recommend it in a heart beat. Threre is a shared bathroom if somebody is in her trailer out the back. It didn't bother me so this place is well priced and worth every dollar. Best Austin experience EVER!!!

  • Would stay here again and again this place is super cool. Take a nice hot hot bath even in the cold... Really relaxing place. If you are staying here and don't mind walking there's a really good Puerto Rican food truck near by (check yelp) that had delicious fried pork, meat pies, and plantains. Loved this place, Austin is great and so is this cottage.

  • We had a great stay in east Austin! The house is adorable and had all the amenities we were looking for with the best location to boot! Deborah was a wonderful host and was super attentive. Made me think about the next place I want to live and a place with a great view and a small footprint now is on my list of wants! Can't recommend this place enough.

    thank you cait

  • Deborah's place is full of character and personality. We had a truly enjoyable stay! The bikes were great, and we managed to pedal all around town from here.

The accommodation was not exactly what we expected, though, so it might help to know a few details:

This isn't truly a "whole place" rental. You share a bathroom with the RV dwellers, which has a rather thin door and is just on the other side of the wall from the bed. In other words, you're going to hear your neighbors coming and going and *ahem.*

There's a lovely cat that you have to feed in the morning and evening.

The bikes are a shared deal, too, so if the RV dwellers want to use them, too, you'll have to work it out.

Deborah's cottage is on a hill beyond a series of rolling hills, so it's a 20-to-30-minute pedaling workout to most destinations. Perfect distance by car, no doubt. If you're wanting to see Austin by bike, though, we'd recommend a place a little closer in.

It's not the cleanest place we've ever stayed, nor was it the least so. Definitely recommend to anyone who's comfortable with a little grit.

Oh, and the outdoor bathtub is AWESOME. Highly recommend having a soak if you're not sharing the yard with others during your stay.

  • We had a pleasant stay! Thanks Deborah for accommodating us last minute. Really cozy bedroom with a super comfy bed. Too bad it was too cold to use the outdoor tub, but we did use the fire pit in the backyard. Very nice view! Highly recommended! Thanks again, Deborah!

About
I find myself living outside of our industrial complex often enough where I have time, space and peace in my life. I seem to live an abundant life where I am so thankful for all my silly creative friends, amazing healthy food to eat, time to play and create, and a job that makes sense to me. I am amazed at everything that grows. I love to walk in the rain. I don't mind running into snakes. I have lived many lives. A mother and wife of 18 years, lived on a community I started in South austin raising farm animals and vegetables with some of my friends and now living on the east central side of town enjoying Austin Life while I work as a massage therapist and facialist out of a studio in my home. I also work in a Aveda Salon in North Austin. I am a creative/nuturer type. Prefer to play music or spend time with people, animals or plants.
