About this listing
2 miles from Hilo along Hilo Bay and the Hamakua Coast
3BR/2BA, 2000 ft², Ocean view property with one(1) king and two(2) queen beds that sleeps 2 to 6.
'Alani House sits on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and Honoli'i Beach is at the end of the block. With direct access to the black sand beach and lifeguards on duty, Honoli'i is one of the Big Island's favorite destinations for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and surfing. With a panoramic view of the ocean, you can watch whales and cruise ships from the front lanais. There are 3 lush waterfalls within easy walking distance from the house.
We are only 2.4 miles (about 3 to 4 minutes) from downtown Hilo along Hilo Bay and the Hamakua Coast. Driving to the airport takes only 10 to 12 minutes. Before you book anywhere else, ask if there's access in and out of the ocean with lifeguards to protect you and your family. And ask whether you'll be drinking purified municipal water or catchment instead. 'Alani House provides all of these benefits, plus wireless connectivity via high-speed internet cable modem.
Places to see:
Driving south, downtown Hilo is only 4 minutes away. Another 4 to 7 minutes will get you to four additional swimming and snorkeling reefs. At about the same distance are Rainbow Falls, Kaumana Caves, Lyman Museum, Ocean Discovery Center, Pacific Tsunami Museum, 'Imiloa Astronomy Center, and the Queen Liliuokalani Gardens. Another surf break, called Pohoiki, located at the Isaac Hale Beach Park is about 45 minutes away. While there, you are within 2 miles of the Kapoho tide pools, Lava Trees State Park, and MacKenzie State Park. Within 50 minutes from 'Alani House, you can drive to the hiking entrance for flowing lava, or to Mauna Kea where you can view the North Star and the Southern Cross in the same night sky.
Driving north from 'Alani House, you will find a scenic drive within 5 minutes, and Akaka Falls about 25 minutes away. An additional 30 minutes will get you to the sacred valley of Waipi'o. You can descend into the valley, or just take photos from the breathtaking overlook.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
It is difficult to overstate the advantages of location. Just walk to the most consistent surf break on the Big Island. Parking at Honoli'i Beach can be extremely limited, and often times no parking is available. Staying at 'Alani House means that you don't have to worry about it.
For doctors looking to stay for a month or more, here are the advantages of Alae Point over Hawaiian Paradise Parks. Alae Point is only 5 to 7 minutes from the hospital and there are 2 routes to get there. HPP has only one main road and it can take from 40 to 55 minutes depending upon traffic.

Nous avons apprécié d'avoir été accueillis par le propriétaire qui nous a donné de judicieux conseils. La maison était accueillante et spacieuse et très propre. A recommander!
This was a home away from home!!
Rory (Sr) was a wonderful host and made us feel very welcome at his charming house by the water. This is a very special location - right on the water, with brilliant views of a beautiful sunrise and cruise ships pulling into Hilo. The home is spotlessly clean, with comfortable beds and a well-equipped kitchen.
Rory is very soft-spoken, unobtrusive and a gracious host. He gave the kids their first (two) private surf lessons at a popular beach within a short walking distance and they loved it! Rory was a fund of local info, all his recommendations for food and sights were spot on! We will definitely be back!
Rory and all of the other Foster's took special care to make sure we had a great time. Rory (who lives downstairs in the home) was great and gave clear instructions about the area, the home but also gave us our needed space in the upstairs parts of the home. The home was furnished very nicely and not like some locations where they just put in a few cheap items. The pans, fridge, electric stove, plates, bowls, etc were all quite nice and we cooked full meals on a few of the nights. The home is near to the ocean but more of a great surfing or spongeboarding spot and not great for a relaxed swim. House was beautiful and had great views of the ocean. The house is near to road and so there was some noticeable traffic noise at night. No matter though, we had a great time in this spacious and wonderful home.
This house is amazing! The host Rory is so helpful and nice!!! The house is kept in excellent condition! The living space is very big, the kitchen is phenomenal! I would recommend this place to anyone! My family and I are definitely going to consider staying here again on our next Hawaiian trip!!!
My wife and I have stayed with a friend who had a house on the same street this property is located many times over the last 12 years. We were used to staying cliff side, this house was on the inland side and close to the road that heads north of Hilo. Unfortunately, the bedrooms were at the back of the house and near the road. At night, the Coquis were fine, but since our last visit to the area, Hilo traffic seems to have increased, so we found the bedrooms a bit noisy -- we had to close the windows.
The property itself is indeed in a great location. We love Kahoa St, a walk to the beach, one can even walk to Hilo-town if you want a long stroll (~2 miles), and the cemetery across Hwy 19 is actually very intriguing to walk through. The interior of the house is clean, well furnished (probably one of the best we've seen in a vacation rental), and has any amenity you want. Beds were comfortable as well. The front patios were both quid and provided stunning views over Hilo bay. While we were there, the Grand Princess wandered in and was docked in Hilo Bay. I think we were a bit early for whales.
My only real gnit is that Rory (I believe the son) who takes care of the property lives in the downstairs studio. It turned out to be fine, but was unexpected for a property advertised as a whole house/apartment rental. I would recommend that the description of the property be updated to reflect Rory's presence. That said, Rory was very polite and offered to help, but we were already well versed/aware of what Hilo-town has to offer.
Very nice, comfy and clean house with view on the ocean. Has 3 large bedrooms (1 king and 2 queen), huge living and nice balcony.
Well located near the main road and the beach.
Me and my friends stayed 5 days and everything went well. Positive experience.
REMARK: Rory the property manager lives downstairs on separated quarters. He's very nice, always willing to help with touristic information and so on and also takes care of cleaning and other duties. While some people may like the presence of a property manager that can assist them, I was not aware that we would have to "share" the house. It's a matter of personal preference but I do prefer to have more "privacy" and rent a home without anybody inside all the time. In fact I told him from the beginning that we would not need any assistance and he makes himself very inconspicuous after that.
We had e good time in hilo. The location was perfect and the room was very clean. Rory was a very friendly and helpful host.
About the Host, Rory
We are professionals who love the unique beauty of each of the Hawai'ian Islands.
For us, the Big Island is one of the last havens for 'old Hawai'i.' We hope you will enjoy seeing the sea turtles (honu) and humpback whales (kohola) in their natural environment.
