About This Listing
Take over the downstairs floor of our rad house. We're in a great, super safe neighborhood, just a few minutes from downtown/Yale. Off street parking, easy access to public transportation and an easy bike ride to most of the city. Two beds, a jacuzzi tub and a fireplace.
You'll mostly have your own floor of the house (finished walk out basement) with a king size bed and a big futon so that you can very comfortably sleep up to 4 in two separate areas. There is some stuff we might need access to, but generally we don't have much need to be down there. We may or may not share a bathroom when it's convenient for you (I think that shower is so much nicer!), but otherwise we generally keep away from your floor. Don't wanna wear pants to the bathroom in the morning? This is the perfect spot. You also get French doors that open up into the backyard right next to the bed, a gas fireplace and a jacuzzi tub.
We're in a great neighborhood that avoids the biggest issue in New Haven; crime. Being just across the harbor we're insulated from the bad neighborhoods that run up against all the nice spots closer to downtown. We have parking behind the house (that you can use if you like) but I prefer to park in the street and have never had an issue. We live around all the firefighters and new professors!
We have easy access to public transportation and are close enough to downtown and Yale that I typically ride my bike over there when I'm headed to the area. If you have a car, it's about 5-10 mins to downtown/Yale and we have easy access to I95/91.
There are two other roommates you'd likely bump into at some point, but other than laundry they don't really come downstairs.
I've moved some furniture around since AirBnB took the photos that are up so the bed is now a king instead of a queen, and some of the shelving has changed.
You'll have access to pretty much the entire house other than the other bedrooms. Kitchen is shared. There is wifi internet and you can use the printer if you need to. We have one big TV with an XBox along with Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, and HBO Go. You'll have access to the washer/dryer.There is some fitness equipment you're welcome to use too, though I also have a gym space so it's up in the air exactly what is here at any given time.
Interaction with Guests
New friends are awesome so we're happy to hang out, go eat or whatever so long as we're not too busy. That said, if you'd rather just pretend we're not here and we mostly ignore each other, that's totally fine too. If you're here on a Tuesday night, we host Taco Tuesday ever week at the house. I cook for about 20ish people and everyone hangs around eating and drinking. You'd be more than welcome to join us, or not, though it's usually not the most restful environment so if you need a silent house to sleep at 10pm we're probably not the best fit on Tuesday nights.
Other Things to Note
Our standard check in time is after 3pm and check out before 1pm, but these are pretty flexible and we're happy to move them around or hold luggage or whatever so long as it doesn't conflict with other guests.
The big rule is just to be respectful and positive. Also, no smoking in the house.
Full disclosure - I personally did not stay in Matt's place. I needed a place to house extra guests during commencement weekend and had contacted him months prior to reserve this. He was completely flexible with last minute changes to the "line-up" and very easy to communicate with. I sent my husband to drop off our friends the first night and they were horribly late, but Matt was patient and kind. My friends had a lot in common with him (music, books) and really enjoyed their stay. They didn't spend a ton of time in the house but it perfectly suited our needs and based on what they tell me and my personal interactions with him, I would certainly recommend his space.
Smooth and easy communication. Matt was warm and welcoming, willing to answer any questions. Bed was super comfy and the shower was fabulous!
Staying at Matt's place was great. It was filled with tons of cool art and collectible's and me and my friends agreed it was one of the coolest houses we'd ever seen. We never got to meet Matt because we were going to a music festival and weren't in the house very long as a result. But from what I could tell through our texts he was a really nice guy and was really accommodating even though he was busy.
Its a bit out of the center, but a nice house in a good neighborhood. You really get a separte room and bathroom in the basement and access to all the other rooms in the house.
About the Host, Matt
After years of involvement in the DIY music scene (toured full time, did a label, booked shows, etc) I've spent countless nights staying with people all over and hosted bands from around the world at my house for more than a decade. I'd much rather do "business" with someone I'd also like to have a beer and play a boardgame with.
We've now hosted well over 50 guests and absolutely love the experience. Sometimes we just talk for a few mins at check in and other times we spend lots of time hanging out, but either way, it's been a wonderful experience to share our home with so many awesome people from all over the world!
The sum value of a life can only be measured in the quality and abundance of positive connections a person makes in the brief time before they turn into worm food. I live a life of awesome moments.
