Take over the downstairs floor of our rad house. We're in a great, super safe neighborhood, just a few minutes from downtown/Yale. Off street parking, easy access to public transportation and an easy bike ride to most of the city. Two beds, a jacuzzi tub and a fireplace.
You'll mostly have your own floor of the house with a queen size bed and a big futon so that you can very comfortably sleep up to 4 in two separate areas. There is some stuff we might need access to, but generally we don't have much need to be down there. Don't wanna wear pants to the bathroom in the morning? This is the perfect spot. You also get French doors that open up into the backyard right next to the bed, a gas fireplace and a jacuzzi tub. I actually prefer this bedroom but my wife prefers the other one, so this is the one that's up for grabs!
We're in a great neighborhood that avoids the biggest issue in New Haven, crime. Being just across the harbor we're insulated from the bad neighborhoods that run up against all the nice spots closer to downtown. We have parking behind the house (that you can use) but I prefer to park in the street and have never had an issue. We live around all the firefighters and new professors!
We have easy access to public transportation and are close enough to downtown and Yale that I typically ride my bike over there when I'm headed to the area. If you have a car, it's about 5 mins to downtown/Yale and we have easy access to I95/91.
We have a super people friendly dog who will have access to the main floor of the house but not downstairs where you are, unless you want tons of cuddles, in which case he'd be happy to hang out with you wherever!
You'll have access to pretty much the entire house other than our own bedroom and our office. Kitchen is shared. There is wifi internet and you can use the printer if you need to. We have one big TV with an XBox/Wii in the main living room. You'll have access to the washer/dryer. You'll have your own bathroom; we use the other bathroom but might need to grab something from a cabinet in yours. There is some fitness equipment you're welcome to use, though I also have a gym space so it's up in the air exactly what is here at any given time.
We sleep in the room above the downstairs bedroom you'll be in and we both work from home a lot so we're generally around quite a bit. She's a painter and I do a bunch of stuff; officiate weddings, teach rock climbing & Krav Maga and do some freelance design work. New friends are awesome so we're happy to hang out, go eat or whatever so long as we're not too busy. That said, if you'd rather just pretend we're not here and we mostly ignore each other, that's totally fine too.
Our standard check in time is after 3pm and check out before 1pm, but these are pretty flexible and we're happy to move them around or hold luggage or whatever so long as it doesn't conflict with other guests.
Awesome basement! I slept on the futon in front of the gas fire place with their awesome dog! Loved it!
We had a comfortable stay when we were visiting New Haven.
Matt's place is filled with fun stuff & their dog Conan is super friendly.
Great place to stay! Matt agreed to let me stay with him and his wife super short notice (<1hr) and was very accomodating. I loved the fireplace downstairs and the overhead heater in the bathroom on the chilly day I was there.
Matt was a very warm and welcoming host. My flight was delayed due to weather and as a result I ended up arriving much later than anticipated, after midnight. Matt was really accommodating and got me set up comfortably in spite of the late arrival. After a long conference day I had a great time playing Rock band with Matt and his friends. I would give Matt my highest recommendation to other guests. Thanks for the excellent hospitality!
Matt and Trish made my first airbnb experience awesome.
Due to Thanksgiving traffic and this horrendous rain our supposedly 9 hr drive from Durham ended up being 12 hours and we were scheduled to arrive late as it was but Matt and Trish were still up to show us around the place and get us settled in! The house is also in a really safe location. I had to wake up after 2 hrs of sleep the next day for my 7 hour long interview day and when I got back I pretty much crashed until dinner time; I didn't hear any noise from upstairs even though I was sleeping at an inconvenient time, which was very considerate of them.
We had the entire bottom floor to ourselves, consisting of the bedroom, a private bathroom, and a small sort of living area with a large, comfortable futon and this fireplace like heater. Everything was clean and nice and one of them (I think Trish?) painted/decorated the whole place and it just looks amazing. And the real selling point (for the winter at least) was this heating thing in the bathroom right above the mat next to the bathtub; it was cold in New Haven and getting to step out of the shower into a warm breeze felt like heaven.
I had a pretty different sleep schedule than Matt and Trish--I was up early and asleep during the afternoon the first day I was there and I left early in the morning after the second night--so I didn't see them too much but they were extremely nice and welcoming when I did meet them. And it was not a hassle at all to arrange how I was to get in and out of the house despite the schedule differences. They even leave some "explore New Haven" type brochures and print-outs by the bed which was very sweet.
They also have a very nice dog who makes basically no noise at all and didn't bother us in the slightest. Really the only mildly disappointing thing I could possibly say about my whole experience was that once when I was trying to play with Conan when Matt and Trish were out and he just walked away into their bedroom and completely ignored me. I guess he was disappointed that it was me and them. Not exactly a deal-breaker by any stretch of the imagination!
I would definitely stay here again and recommend it anyone looking for a safe, awesome, welcoming place to stay (unless, or course, you are like my college roommate and are absolutely terrified of dogs!).
Matt's place was as described and provided us with a comfortable stay. Communication prior to our arrival was effective and Trish was accommodating with our late arrival time. We happened to stay on a cold/rainy night which made for a slight chill in the air in the basement apartment but there is a gas-powered fireplace that allowed us to adjust the temperature fairly quickly. The bed was comfy and had sufficient linens. Someone else complained about missing tiles in the tub area -- Trish proactively mentioned this while giving us the tour and it was a non-issue. We did not notice any mold/mildew as described in the other review. The air was slightly damp but it's to be expected from a basement, especially on a rainy night. This place is fine and reasonably priced.
At the last moment I needed a place for an overnight in New Haven and asked Matt if he could put me up - he replied immediately and cordially and the rest is history! A great guy with a great space!! I only regret that I was there for just one night.... but I do hope to be back. Matt (and his partner) are wonderful, and they own the world's greatest dog.
The space itself is cozy, clean and comfortable. Parking was easy. The location is a short drive into downtown and conveniently located off the highway, but is peaceful and quiet. I look forward to returning!
I am sorry that the smell of mildew and dog was prevalent in this basement apartment. There was mildew in the tub, and several of the ceiling tiles above the bathtub are missing. On the positive side, the mattress in the back room was very comfortable, and the flannel sheets were cozy on this damp night. The other bed smelled of dog and mildew, so it was not so pleasant. The host couple was friendly and very cooperative. There are a few hundred board games, game figurines and fantasy game posters in the front room. It could be a little scary to little kids. We were in need of a place to bathe and sleep, and were gone in the morning early. I wrote to them to share about our observations of the smell, mildew and degenerated bathtub, but they did not respond. I am sorry to have to tell others that these were the conditions we found, but such was the case.
One need only read any other review of our space (including one left from a guest literally the next day thanking us for the "cozy, clean and comfortable" space) to see that Irene sadly did not read our listing and due to her disappointment in our having a dog and D&D books she's decided to make up negative accusations of the space. Check out our "degenerated bathtub" in the AirBnB verified photos along with our "scary" game collection and decide for yourself if we're a worthwhile place to stay.
Awesome people and awesome house! This was our first Airbnb experience and we were not disappointed. Matt and Trish are fabulous. They gave us wonderful information about the area, engaged in great conversations and made their home our home for our stay. Their dog Conan is adorable. The pictures are true to the décor, loved it. My daughter and I found the space perfect. The bed was very comfortable, bathroom with all the amenities of home and the sitting area in the basement gave us a space to chill. Our only regret is that we did not get to stay longer.
Hats off to Matt for quick, helpful responses to my last minute inquiries. (My one day round trip to New Haven meetings had to be extended, requiring an unplanned overnight stay.)
Thanks for a good night’s rest: comfy bed, nice shower, quite home, handy parking, low cost and high convenience (5 minutes to Yale) -- all really appreciated.
