This comfortable house is in the desirable Matapalo area of the Osa peninsula. It is a solar powered house that was build with many of the conveniences of home. Enjoy a gourmet kitchen, quality mattresses, and large covered wrap around deck.
Casa Mil Flores is a hidden gem located on the Osa Peninsula in the southern zone of Costa Rica. Located a short walk off the beachfront, the house is close enough to enjoy the sound of the rolling waves on Playa Carbonera. To the other direction, the property boarders a nature reserve with abundant wildlife and plant bio-diversity.
Casa Mil Flores is conveniently located in a small neighborhood, close to the rare amenities of the local bar/restaurant, school, and transportation. The one acre property has been strategically landscaped with tropical fruit trees and foliage to add to the privacy of this home.
Beautifully designed, the house has a passive solar concrete first floor and an all tropical hardwood upper level. The first floor offers a cool relief from the tropical mid-day heat. There is a guest bedroom with a king size bed. This room is perfect for the late morning snooze or afternoon nap. The lower level of the house also has a living room, a professionally equipped kitchen, a large master bath, and a covered deck area for dining and relaxation. If you love to cook, you will appreciate the professional gas range, the full size solar powered refrigerator with freezer (a rare find on the osa!), snack bar, inside-outside wood bar and abundant counter space. The water for this entire home is purified with a UV filtration system.
The second floor is an expansive open master bedroom constructed of tropical hardwood and a polished wood floor that can double as a yoga room. There is a king size bed with a queen size hide a bed and a sofa bed. There is also a full bath with views of the jungle and mountains. Upstairs has two large decks for animal viewing and evening sunsets over the distant ridge line.
This home is about 100 meters from our local beach and within a 10-40 minute walk to all of the surfing waves of the matapalo area. The area offers many activities such as jungle hikes, birding tours, horseback riding, river and waterfall walks, as well as sailing, world class fishing, outstanding surf breaks for all levels, surf lessons and local yoga classes.
For added privacy, this property has been landscaped with a living fence. It also includes a carport and a gated entrance. Please check out the garden too! I have planted many fruits and local herbs. Different things are in season at different times…please feel free to forage…but always leave enough for the next person. Thanks!
Interaction with Guests
I am very happy to have email interaction with my guests. I am very accessible via internet….unless I am camping at a remote surf location…which I honestly wish happened more often.
My home is very close to the mouth of the Rio Carbonera. This is the best waterfront, natural dipping pool in the matapalo area. It can be quite refreshing on a hot summer day. It is also a cool, safe, calm place for small children to swim and play.
Taxis can be arranged to come to the house. Best to give the drivers a days notice to ensure availability. My caretakers can make these arrangements for guests.
Other Things to Note
This home is located about 150 meters from the only public bar/restaurant in matapalo. It is convenient for a quick meal and there is an organic farmers market on friday afternoons. During the high season, Friday nights are the community social time. Its fun to mingle with the locals. Please be aware that sometimes music can be heard from my house on a busy Friday night or during special events. Music shuts down by 12:30.
This is a solar run home and when there is cloudy weather or storms power may run low. I do have a generator backup for these times. Also, due to the remote location of the Matapalo area, there may also be lapses in internet access for various reasons.
This home, and all homes in the area, are abundant with wildlife. It is recommended that all guests have flashlights. It is a solar powered home with a very large solar system. But that being said, power conservation is important to ensure that the power is there when you need it. Please be sure to turn off lights and fans when not in use. Due to past experiences, pets are not normally allowed in this home but please ask for exceptions The water system at this property is on a septic and well water is stored in a tank via solar pump. Please remember to turn off all hoses or faucets when not in use. Please do not flush anything beside toilet paper down the toilet.
Casa Mil Flores is a little piece of heaven!! The home was exactly as described. We enjoyed lounging in the hammocks, walking around the yard and looking at all the flowers, spotting wildlife, waking up and hearing the birds and monkeys, and walking to the beautiful beach. Perhaps because we were there in the dry season, or perhaps because nothing is as loud as your own baby's cries, the howler monkeys didn't wake us up in the morning as others have said. The sunrises over the beach are amazingly beautiful.
There are a few other homes near Casa Mil Flores, almost like a little neighborhood. Mostly american ex-pats and other vacationers. I found it quite comforting to know that there were other people around, and the yard was so secluded that we never really saw anyone. Every time we went to the beach, we were the ONLY ones there.
The beach is quite rocky - I found this made things more interesting for the kids as there were lots of little nooks to explore. Getting over the rocks to Playa pan Dulce (the sandiest beach) was a bit challenging, but only because we had our 11 month old to carry. Our 5 and 8 year-olds did just fine and enjoyed the adventure. The surf in the Pacific was warm could be a bit rough - Michelle very helpfully left tide charts to be able to best plan when to swim. Swimming in the river next to the house was wonderful—calm water and refreshingly cool.
Kim and Melanie were great local hosts who helped arrange a wonderful dolphin tour and zip lining for us. Melanie checked on us without being intrusive and was available to answer questions and give advice. Maru was wonderful and it was very nice to have the house cleaned mid-way through our stay.
The last night we drove out to Carate (further away from Pto Jimenez) and enjoyed the sunset on the beach and a lovely meal at the Lookout Inn. We'd recommend this to anyone visiting Casa Mil Flores.
Michelle was extremely responsive and easy to communicate with. I would highly recommend Casa Mil Flores to anyone visiting Osa.
Casa mi Flores, living la Vida Pura! We enjoyed our stay beautiful home off the grid in the Osa. Melanie and Kim where great in helping us discover the jungle and can't forget Maru she was a sweet heart. Thank you Michelle your house was lovely and the new shower heater was a bonus after long day surfing! Recommend the house to anyone looking to discover the Osa.
Michelle's house is truly a gem, located in an exceptional location. If you are looking to go off the grid and enjoy nature in one of the most pristine spots in Costa Rica, I would highly recommend Casa Mil Flores. The location is nice, since it is close to Martina's a meeting place. Her hosts Melanie and Kim were very helpful in making reservations. I would recommend going to Lapa Rios for lunch (we went for dinner). They have a nice mirador. 4WD is also mandatory.
We can truly recommend this wonderful place in a beautiful and remote part of Costa Rica. Fantastic nature and wild life - very biodiverse - and we loved the cute, rustic, nicely decorated house a few steps from the ocean. Thank you! (PS.If you rent a car, 4WD jeep is it!)
Michelle's home is even better than the picture. It's a beautiful, very comfortable and well equipped house. We have had a great time and the neighbors Kim and Melanie were very welcoming and helpful. We enjoyed practicing yoga with the community, swimming in the ocean and hiking the river. We drove a small car from San Jose, and it It took us a good 7 hours. Our advice for you is: 1) to arrive at day time to find the house easily and immediately enjoy the scenery, 2) to buy groceries prior your arrival as nothing is available around the house and Puerte Jiminez is at 50 minutes drive (for a small car), and 3) to withdraw some cash before arriving as well, there is a good restaurant just at the corner but it does not accept credit cards.
Beautiful home and grounds! We loved picking and drinking from the fresh coconuts and enjoying the sounds of the jungle every morning/night. The neighbor, Kim, was extremely helpful, too. Off the beaten path, but well worth the travel.
We didn't want to leave!
This house is beautiful and surrounded by lush rainforest and wildlife. As others have said, we watched dozens of different kinds of monkeys and the scarlet macaws from the house (oh, and a sloth) and heard the ocean from our bed. We also ate fresh fish every other day mostly from fishing off shore.
The beach is a 2-minute walk away with other beaches you can walk to, such as the gorgeous Pan Dulce. We were welcomed by the caretakers living around there who pointed out fruits and herbs in the garden and kept the house clean and the garden well tended. It felt like a family. We really luxuriated in this place, and loved every minute of it.
The descriptions of the house were very accurate, and Michelle was a responsive and delightful host. She left a helpful instructional booklet for the house and made sure that people were there for care taking the house.
We loved being there! Thank you!
My name is Michelle Large. My passion for the ocean started at a young age at the Jersey shore with my family and took a great leap when I moved to California when i was 20 years old and started surfing. A few years later I decided to travel to Costa Rica and that was the beginning of a new chapter of my life. I stayed in the Peninsula de Osa for 5 years at that time before moving back to the states to finish my studies. My passions include surfing, traveling, cooking, raw food preparation, SUP, yoga, painting, fishing and gardening. I speak both english and spanish. I divide my time between California and Costa Rica but I love to travel to new places and meet new people. I used to be more of a rustic traveler but that has refined with age. In my opinion, traveling is anywhere that is new and interesting. It does not necessarily have to be going to the other end of the earth...although i like that too.
