This comfortable house is in the desirable Matapalo area of the Osa peninsula. It is a solar powered house that was build with many of the conveniences of home. Enjoy a gourmet kitchen, wifi, quality mattresses, and large covered wrap around deck.

The Space

Casa Mil Flores is a hidden gem located on the Osa Peninsula in the southern zone of Costa Rica. Located a short walk off the beachfront, the house is close enough to enjoy the sound of the rolling waves on Playa Carbonera. To the other direction, the property boarders a nature reserve with abundant wildlife and plant bio-diversity.

Casa Mil Flores is conveniently located in a small neighborhood, close to the rare amenities of the local bar/restaurant, school, and transportation. The one acre property has been strategically landscaped with tropical fruit trees and foliage to add to the privacy of this open air home.

Beautifully designed, the house has a passive solar concrete first floor and an all tropical hardwood upper level. The first floor offers a cool relief from the tropical mid-day heat. There is a guest bedroom with a king size bed. This room is perfect for the late morning snooze or afternoon nap. The lower level of the house also has a living room, a professionally equipped kitchen, a large master bath, and a covered deck area for dining and relaxation. If you love to cook, you will appreciate the professional gas range, the full size solar powered refrigerator with freezer (a rare find on the osa!), snack bar, inside-outside wood bar and abundant counter space. The water for this entire home is purified with a UV filtration system.

The second floor is an expansive open master bedroom constructed of tropical hardwood and a polished wood floor that can double as a yoga room. There is a king size bed with a queen size hide a bed and a sofa bed. There is also a full bath with views of the jungle and mountains. Upstairs has two large decks for animal viewing and evening sunsets over the distant ridge line.

This home is about 100 meters from our local beach and within a 10-40 minute walk to all of the surfing waves of the matapalo area. The area offers many activities such as jungle hikes, birding tours, horseback riding, river and waterfall walks, as well as sailing, world class fishing and local yoga classes.

For added privacy, this property has been landscaped with a living fence. It also includes a carport and a gated entrance. Please check out the garden too! I have planted many fruits and local herbs. Different things are in season at different times…please feel free to forage…but always leave enough for the next person. Thanks!

Interaction with Guests

I am very happy to have email interaction with my guests. I am very accessible via internet….unless I am camping at a remote surf location…which I honestly wish happened more often.

The Neighborhood

My home is very close to the mouth of the Rio Carbonera. This is the best waterfront, natural dipping pool in the matapalo area. It can be quite refreshing on a hot summer day. It is also a cool, safe, calm place for small children to swim and play.

Getting around

Taxis can be arranged to come to the house. Best to give the drivers a days notice to ensure availability. My caretakers can make these arrangements for guests.

Other Things to Note

This home is located about 150 meters from the only public bar/restaurant in matapalo. It is convenient for a quick meal and there is an organic farmers market on friday afternoons. During the high season, Friday nights are the social (email hidden). Its fun to mingle with the locals… but sometimes music can be heard from my house on a busy Friday night.

  • Casa Mil Flores was a fantastic vacation spot in an amazing, gorgeous area of Costa Rica. If you want to both relax and be adventurous - this is an absolutely perfect place to visit. Our visit to Matapalo was at the start of our honeymoon. While the drive was long (and slightly bumpy) from San Jose, we were greeted by Gretchen who was such a great host to us during our (website hidden) Flores is a beautiful home with a lush tropical environment surrounding the space. The beach is so close that in the mornings, we would get up and enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the waves in seclusion. Like everyone who calls Matapalo their home, you'll have to adjust your sleep schedule, we were in bed before 9PM each night and up at 5AM with the sunrise and sounds of birds and monkeys as our (very effective) alarm clock.

While in Matapalo, Gretchen provided some great suggestions for activities including a surf lesson with "Pollo." The surf beach in Matapalo is THE BEST beach to learn how to surf and "Pollo" was such a great instructor. After a half hour in the warm beach water, we were catching waves and riding them to shore. Hiking along the road provides great sight seeing of birds and the monkey communities, no matter where you walk, take a camera! About 2 miles from the home is Everyday Adventures, a group that lets you climb a large tree and repel down a waterfall.

A few tips we'd give other visitors.
Paradise doesn't require jeans. We brought warm weather clothes like jeans and we laughed at ourselves for it.
Prepare for mosquitos! Our visit was in June and the entire country of Costa Rica has is a hot bed for mosquitos. The house is very open but the comfortable beds have nets to protect you.
Don't fear the road - it's a bumpy dirt road from Puerto Jimenez to Matapalo, we rented an SUV - clearance matters more than 4WD.
Watch the solar power: Mil Flores (like all the homes in the area) is solar power. This means the power isn't recharging if it's a cloudy day or at night. Be conservative and don't charge phones or have fans going non-stop through the night.
Bring a camera and take lots of pictures. The environment in this area of Costa Rica is gorgeous. We spent the second half of our vacation on the northern end of the country and the scenery and wildlife in Matapalo is beyond comparison.

  • Casa Mil Flores was beyond all of our expectations! The house is truly beautiful, all open air and we woke up by the chanting sounds of birds and howlers perched nearby every morning. The top floor bedroom offers a delicious breeze and a large yoga balcony where we did our morning yoga in the sunlight. We cooked every day in the spacious kitchen and had an amazing time just relaxing outside on the patio, watching Toucans, Parrots, Spider monkeys, Capucins and adorable squirl monkeys in the trees right beside us. The beach nearby was stunning and often completely free of souls. It was a true paradise! Thank you so much Michelle! We will definitely come back! :)

  • Big airy house set in its own gardens in the middle of the jungle, where every day you are awakened by birds and monkeys, plus other jungle sounds. Every morning the sun streams in, it makes you feel good to be there.

  • We had the most amazing time at the Casa mil Flores!
Getting there was super easy with Michelle's instructions and her neighbor Hellen was already there waiting for us, showing us the house and explaining everything we needed to know.

The house has two stories with a beautiful large bedroom on the first floor where you wake up with a sunrise view and a yoga terrace. The kitchen offers everything you need, so we cooked everyday and didn't even need to go somewhere else. The garden is beautiful, very well kept in shape. Every afternoon we got visited by monkeys, eating bananas in the carport. A gorgeous little pathway of hibiscus trees is leading the way to the quiet beach where you can walk for hours without even meeting anyone but parrots and birds sometimes. The neighbors Hellen & Kim can give you great tips for what to around the area by foot or car. They built a little natural infinity pool at a small river right next to the house where you can enjoy a little fresh water bath. One day we went to the Luna Lodge in Carate by car, a quite bumpy ride but definitely worth the lunch and view there.

What can we say: there's Costa Rica and there's the Osa. It truly felt like paradise. Thank you so much Michelle for making this happen! We'll definitely come back as soon as we can!

  • Michelle's place on the Osa Peninsula was beyond our dreams. The house is beautiful, large and impeccably clean with a fabulous kitchen that we used every day. Maru, the housekeeper, met us upon our arrival and showed us all there is to know about the house and land surrounding the house. We are traveling with our two year old and she was very taken by Maru's gentle nature and fun spirit. She showed us the stunning beach just a two minute walk from the house and the fresh water swimming hole overlooking the gulf. On our last night Maru made us one of the most delicious meals we have had in Costa Rica so far! Kim and Melanie, the house managers who live next door to Michelle's house, were very helpful as well! Whenever we had questions about what to do on the peninsula, they were there for us. They were kind enough to call in reservations for dining treats and made many suggestions for places we wouldn't have known about otherwise. Michelle was very communicative as well and made sure we had everything we needed. Hopefully we can meet her on our next visit!

Our favorite experiences on the Osa were:
Visiting the bird sanctuary. The owner's Patrick and Rubyanne are fascinating people and we loved hearing their stories and checking out their birds.
Eating lunch at the various lodges on the peninsula. The Luna Lodge and Finka Exotica were fabulous!
Hiking a mile or so up the river up to a waterfall.
Ogling the squirrel monkeys on Michelle's exquisite land.
Drinking fresh coconut water plucked from the trees outside by Maru.
Doing yoga on the balcony off of the bedroom. This was such a treat!
Getting a jungle facial from Alison (the local body and skin pro) in a lovely outdoor spa.
The artisanal market at Martina's restaurant. Such a fun place!

Thanks Michelle for opening your home to us! We had a fantastic stay and will certainly be back!!

  • We had a great time at Michelle's home in Osa! A beautiful big, calm and quiet space that was easy to feel at home in. Minutes from the rocky beach through a gorgeous hibiscus flower archway! We had the beach to ourselves- apart from when we were joined by Macaws and Monkeys! Michelle's neighbours were on hand 24/7 and very helpful with anything we desired/required. There were lovely towels, and lots of places for us to lounge in and around the house. We enjoyed making smoothies in the kitchen, doing yoga on the balcony and wathcing it get light from bed. The place was easy to find and provided a blissful solitude for us to be alone and relax in. Thank you! xx

About
My name is Michelle Large. My passion for the ocean started at a young age at the Jersey shore with my family and took a great leap when I moved to California when i was 20 years old and started surfing. A few years later I decided to travel to Costa Rica and that was the beginning of a new chapter of my life. I stayed in the Peninsula de Osa for 5 years at that time before moving back to the states to finish my studies. My passions include surfing, traveling, cooking, raw food preparation, SUP, yoga, painting, fishing and gardening. I speak both english and spanish. I divide my time between California and Costa Rica but I love to travel to new places and meet new people. I used to be more of a rustic traveler but that has refined with age. In my opinion, traveling is anywhere that is new and interesting. It does not necessarily have to be going to the other end of the earth...although i like that too.
