Surrounded by woods & horse pastures, this cozy cottage is a perfect way to get in tune with nature, relax and create, yet still have ready access to the most charming mountain town. Perfect for monthly or weekly lodging as well as overnight stays!

The space

This charming, cozy cottage in the mountains of northern Alabama is offered by writer and owner John Lee. Enjoy peace, quiet and breathtaking views of the surrounding woods and horse pastures from both a front and back deck under massive trees. The cottage is ideal for long-term monthly or weekly stays as well as nightly visits.

If you're ready to stay in, the rustic cottage and surrounding land provide perfect space for resting, creating, writing, meditating and more. If you're ready to go exploring, the cottage is within walking distance of the hike and bike trails of DeSoto State Park.

The property is located about 5 miles from Mentone, a quaint, artistic town only 10 minutes away from Interstate 59 (Exit 231) on Lookout Mountain. Mentone offers great restaurants, stores and shops along with breathtaking mountain views and incomparable natural beauty.

The cottage sleeps up to 5 people on one real bed in the bedroom, a couch in the living room which unfolds into a queen size bed, and a daybed which sleeps one that the owners will supply if desired.

It features a huge living area with a gorgeous indoor fireplace, one very spacious bedroom, a kitchen, and two full baths. The cottage is fully furnished including a washer and dryer. The kitchen is completely equipped and has a quaint little breakfast nook looking out into the woods and pastureland. Guests are welcome to make use of the dishes, utensils and appliances.

This getaway is very pet friendly; 1 acre is fully fenced! There are no pets currently on the premises and yours are welcome to the entire area, but please clean up after them, as well as crate them if left alone inside the cottage. There is plenty of free on-site parking.

Make sure and visit Mentone on Saturday. There is a neat farmers market and the shops especially AJ trading post is awesome.

John's cottage is wonderful--well off the beaten trail but close enough to town for a convenient trip for groceries or a nice meal. It's a really great spot to get away to read and write, disconnect from the grid, or watch and listen to nature, without losing any of the amenities of home.

This was a great place to spend an entire week in a beautiful, peaceful setting. Close enough to lots of things to do but was satisfied to kick back and relax in peace and quiet and watch the gorgeous horse farm across the street!

I'm not sure what I can add that hasn't already been said in the other reviews. Maybe IDYLLIC is an adjective that hasn't already been used? We chose this place primarily for the enormous fenced area for our two dogs. That worked out perfectly. But we were struck with the peace and serenity we felt there. It's quiet there, but we never ran out of things to do. We are avid cyclists and the hills were challenging for us. The Breeze at Dawn struck a nice balance for us because although we loved the rural setting, we were happy to have wifi and wireless service. John is a PHENOMENAL host - quick to reply to questions, having the cottage stocked with everything you might need, very accommodating when we decided to extend our stay a few extra days. We would return to this wonderful place again in a heartbeat.

I can't thank you enough for your kind and supportive words and feelings about the breeze at dawn. It is a peaceful place if I do say so myself I spent many good years writing, reading, watching my trees grow

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at John's cottage, it was the perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. The cottage is so cozy and quiet. We appreciated the snacks John left for us. The bed is comfortable and the air conditioner and fans kept us nice and cool. I took advantage of the Jacuzzi tub after all the walking we did around the State Park. Our Westie loved exploring the large fenced yard. We will definitely be back.

I'm a writer, public speaker, therapist and college professor. I love spending time with my three sweet dogs on Lookout Mountain, where I've owned this little piece of Heaven for over 20 years.
