The Space

COMFORTABLE TOWN HOUSE WITH VIEWS >>
The 18th century town house has just been renovated and features a third floor loggia with a kitchen and rare views of the towers of the ducal palace, the so-called Duché.

The second floor bedroom has a toilet and sink, there is a comfortable first floor sitting room, and a ground floor wet room with shower, storage and a washing machine.

A good friend jokingly calls the decorative style "modern monastic". We've worked hard to retain and highlight the old stone walls, beams and other features and decorated it with mainly Scandinavian furniture.

There's a TV with international channels; free wifi and free calls to landlines in Europe, and North America.

We also have a bicycle that you are free to use.
Please take note that the house has four levels and stairs must not be a problem.

GATEWAY TO BEAUTY, HISTORY >>
Uzès is often called “the Frenchman’s own holiday paradise” because of its Utopian “relaxed charm, narrow streets with carefully restored houses, tree-lined squares with medieval arcades and an abundance of cafes and restaurants.”

It's an easy place to stay content but also a perfect base for day trips in an area packed with cultural and natural gems, including Mediterranean beaches, Avignon, Nimes, Montpellier, the Camargue, Aix-en-Provence, Baux-de-Provence, Arles and Marseille.

But in actual fact, once people get to Uzès most prefer to stay put. In the words of another friend: "Uzès is a trap. You'll never leave." Many return again and again - and some of us fall so much in love we end up getting a second home.

Welcome!

The Neighborhood

The house is situated in a quiet and beautiful pedestrianized street in Uzès' historical centre, a great starting point for tranquil walks in the aristocratic town's labyrinthine core.

There's a friendly salon de thé round the corner, an Italian who serves great coffees further down the street and whole list of restaurants and cafés on the boulevard and in the alleyways, not forgetting the market on the Place aux Herbes Wednesdays and Saturdays and Uzès' famous quality antique and craft shops.

Getting around

Although Uzès in many ways retains a feeling of living as a separate Utopian fiefdom that makes you not want to leave at all, it is in fact well-connected with the outside world.

Direct busses to Nimes TGV station in the city centre take less than half an hour and cost 1.30EUR. Busses to Avignon are 45 minutes and also stop at the unmissable Pont du Gard World Heritage site.

TO AND FROM UZÈS >>
Uzès is conveniently located close to France’s major highways A9 and A7.

If you’re travelling from abroad you may find it easier and faster to get to the south of France by plane or train, via for example Paris, Marseille, Montpellier, Nimes or Avignon.

TGV trains run from Paris to Avignon or Nimes in less than three hours. Cheap tickets at the IDTGV website. Normal fare tickets at the SNCF website.

Other Things to Note

EASY PARKING >>
Paid outdoor parking (€3.60 a day) is a one minute walk away behind the archbishop's palace. Paid subterranean parking (€10 a day) is also round the corner, on the Boulevard.

For free parking you'll have to walk about five minutes to the rue Saint-Firmin area.

  • I have been back from Alexander's Uzès house for a couple of weeks now, and the nine-night stay continues to comfort and inspire. It was the perfect spot for a working retreat, with everything close to hand, yet quiet and private.

The layout is rather like a medieval tower, so be mindful that there are many stairs, but you will be rewarded with a large picture window framing the rooftops and the handsome Duchy Tower.

This bijoux house is simply appointed with style typical of this elegant town. And Alexander was the most gracious of hosts, always on hand before, during and after my stay. If you have never visited Uzès before, Alexander has compiled a comprehensive guide, and he publishes a dynamic website with local updates.

I couldn't have been happier. This will be my first choice for a return stay in Uzès.

  • We had a lovely week in Alexander's house in Uzès. We were unlucky with the weather, but thoroughly enjoyed ourselves nevertheless, spending lazy afternoons and evenings reading, listening to music or watching dvds indoors, making this a much better option than a hotel would have been. Although it is an old, stone house, it was very warm and cosy despite the freezing temperatures outside. Alexander couldn't be more helpful and communicative, and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend the house to anyone thinking of visiting the area (we hope to go back ourselves one day soon, to see all the sights we missed thanks to the rain!)

  • Uzès is a gem of a town, and Alexander's place is a gem from which to explore it. We have nothing but praise for both the town and for this particular accommodation, and we spent a fantastic six nights here. Our favorite floor (there are four floors in this house) was probably the loggia on the top floor - great for relaxing, making a coffee, listening to Alexander's nice selection of music, or even preparing dinner or a snack... all the while with views overlooking the rooftops of Uzès and the adjacent castle. Alexander was a superb host, even though we never met him in person. Communication with him was faultless, and he provided one of the most thorough booklets I have ever received from a host, explaining so much about Uzès and its surrounds, and things to do in the area. He generally took no longer than two or three minutes (literally) to reply to any of our inquiries, which was very impressive. His house is right in the heart of the old town, and a more charming old town you would be hard-pressed to find. I only wish we could have stayed longer, or even bought a similar property for ourselves to move into (but alas, both of those options have to remain as dreams for the time being).

Thank you again Alexander for a time we will never forget in Uzès.

  • My wife, 4 year-old son and I stayed at Alexander's place in Uzes in early Nov. Despite the chilly weather, we were warmly welcomed and Alexander proved was a gracious host. All was as advertized. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a good spot to explore Uzes et environs in style and comfort.

  • I had such a great time at Alexander's place that I actually extended my stay! Where should I start? The place is really, really nice, conceived and decorated with impeccable taste. It has this delicious "luxurious retreat" feeling. Everything you could need (from an umbrella to a kitchen accessory) is there. It's super clean and very quiet. The view above Uzès' roofs from the room at the top is one from a movie, and hearing the bell from the church nearby is priceless. Its location in Uzès (the quintessential Provence town) is perfect, and Alexander (although we never met in person) was so helpful, friendly and responsive. I personally didn't mind the stairs, they're a great workout! I would have stayed there longer if I didn't have to get back home!

  • I don't normally do the review thing but here make an exeption.Although we did not meet Alexander he gave us all the info one could need. The place was spotlessly clean and location was perfect.

  • My husband, son and I planned a very last minute trip to Uzes and contacted Alex a few hours before we'd hoped to check in. We were thrilled to receive such a quick response. He was easy to communicate with, providing all the necessary details to allow us to check-in just a little later that evening. He provided an informative document summarizing all the things we'd need to know about his townhome. The space itself was very charming. We were really hoping to be right in the historic center of Uzes and the location of this place can't be beat! It is about a 2 min walk to parking and also to Place aux Herbes. We enjoyed the lively market and strolling through the small cobblestone streets. The apartment is comfortable although we did need to be careful, especially with our youngster, on the stairs between each level, which are quite steep. The use of space in the cozy apartment is great. We had everything we needed and more.

  • We had a truly lovely time staying in Uzès - the townhouse is great and it felt like a treat to be there. It was clean, tidy and everything was exactly as described. It's right inside the old town, without being surrounded by touristy chaos, and was easy to find when we arrived.

I was trying to think of something critical to say, and the only thing I could come up with was if that we were really tall (we really aren't) the low ceilings might've bothered us. So if you're extra tall you might want to chat to Alex about it before booking. I reckon you'd still have a great time tho!! :)

    September 2012
  • Very pleasant experience in Alexander's house! We had four people staying there and all of us enjoyed the center place out of Uzes town, full range of kitchen ware. CDs and books that offered by the house. Besides, Alexander is a very responsive and friendly house owner. Highly recommendation for your holiday in southern France!

  • Alex's apartment is gorgeously designed and quite charming. We loved staying there for about a week. Uzes is beautiful and his place is right in the middle of it.

Alex and the caretaker Jehanne are highly responsive and helpful every step of the way. Would absolutely airBNB with them again. The map they gave us of Uzes was very helpful.

One note: noise travels very easily in the narrow alleys of Uzes, so if you're looking for isolation from the neighbors, this is not the place for you.

About
For me the airbnb community has proven to be a successful outlet both for renting our house in France as well as for finding accommodation away from home when we have the opportunity to see more of the world. It’s clearly a brilliant way of meeting and connecting with good and interesting people, and it goes without saying that as house guests we would be as respectful of your home as we hope and expect guests at our homes will be. Based in my native Copenhagen, Denmark, with my partner, I work as a corporate journalist in the cleantech industry and do some creative writing on the side. Taking my cue from Airbnb's recommendations, the five things I couldn't live without are probably my communication devices, books, music, travel and the people I love. Favourite book: Lawrence Durrell's The Alexandria Quartet. Favourite travel destination: Uzès, of course. As an Airbnb host, because I enjoy sharing my own passion for and knowledge of Uzès so much, you can expect to rent from a person who takes a keen interest in making sure you enjoy your stay and will like his favourite French town as much as he does!
