About this listing

The space

Monopoli is the southern port of the Bari area. After the destruction of Egnathia, an ancient city of Messapi in strong connection with the greeks, its inhabitants fled to Monopoli, from which it derives its name as only (monos) city (polis). For centuries it has been one of the most important harbor in Apulia, even though for its strategic position was usually attacked by Barbary corsairs.

Since the XI century it hosts the bishop's diocese, and in the XV century it came under the Venetian control becoming one of the most important seaports on the Adriatic Sea as a base between Bari and Brindisi. The city saw also the Spanish domination: in this period the Aragonese transformed radically the historical center building a castel and improving the defensive system as you can see even nowadays.

Monopoli is today one of the most appreciated touristic destination because of its history and the beauty of the coast: a constellation of tiny creeks and sandy beaches. Also the nightlife with pubs and clubs along the seaside is well appreciated.

The city hosts many touristic attraction like: the Charles V Castel, The Gerosolomitano Hospital (1350), the S. Jacob Hospital, Palmieri Palace, the Comunal Biblioteque, the Sant Stephen abbey, the reinassance city walls.

Among the churces it worth a visit the Cathedral which is a Baroque architecture, the S. Maria Amalfitana Basilica, a rare piece of Romanic architecture, the SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo church with its paleocristian architecture.

We would suggest also a visit of the near towns like Polignano a Mare (the Mr. Volare city) with its high cliffs overlooking the sea, Castellana Grotte with the famous caves and Alberobello, the Unesco city. Among art and history you might also have a visit to the Fasano’s Zoosafari which can be the best choice for childrens and adults…

The location is central and walking distance of lovely eateries. The town itself is picture perfect and seemed to be mainly Northern Italian tourists. The apartment is small but clean and comfortable. The entrance to the building, the stairs and the bike storage area you see in the photos is a communal area. The apartment is a small kitchen, shower room, bedroom and lounge area with a sofa bed. Maria was very helpful and communicated promptly. Unfortunately between my poor Italian and Maria's English (which is better than my Italian) there was some confusion over the check out arrangements.

Although small, this flat was sparkly clean and so well equipped not only in the kitchen and bathroom but also with bikes and beach umbrellas to use and air conditioning. It was right in the heart of beautiful old Monopoli, so close to lovely swimming, shops, restaurants and amazing ice cream. What a great place to stay, and a warm and friendly host who waited patiently for us all day and was still cheerful and welcoming when we finally arrived. Thank you Maria

It was a perfect place for my stay. just a few minutes walk to the beach, shops and restaurants. I never met Maria I only met her husband and he actually came to pick us up which was so nice of him ! It was no problem with checking in our checking out, we are live there earlier and they let us leave the bags there until the apartment was ready for us. I would definitely recommend it to anybody I was there with my mother and two kids and we had enough room in the apartment. Monopoli was great, we discovered the little bike taxi and I used them all the time, they would charge five euros to take us to beaches that were 2 km away and they were Able to drive us all the way to the apartment, cars are not allowed in the old town.

Our trip to Monopoli was amazing! The Airbnb was located in a really cute area that was close to restaurants, shops, and the beach. Our only complaint would be that it is really noisy at night on the weekends and Sunday morning. Throughout the week, the night life is still incredible, but you don't really hear it from the Airbnb unless people are walking by. There was also no wifi in the Airbnb, but there are plenty of restaurants close by with wifi :) Overall we had a very nice stay and the hosts were really sweet and helpful! Would definitely stay here again.
