About this listing
Monopoli is the southern port of the Bari area. After the destruction of Egnathia, an ancient city of Messapi in strong connection with the greeks, its inhabitants fled to Monopoli, from which it derives its name as only (monos) city (polis). For centuries it has been one of the most important harbor in Apulia, even though for its strategic position was usually attacked by Barbary corsairs.
Since the XI century it hosts the bishop's diocese, and in the XV century it came under the Venetian control becoming one of the most important seaports on the Adriatic Sea as a base between Bari and Brindisi. The city saw also the Spanish domination: in this period the Aragonese transformed radically the historical center building a castel and improving the defensive system as you can see even nowadays.
Monopoli is today one of the most appreciated touristic destination because of its history and the beauty of the coast: a constellation of tiny creeks and sandy beaches. Also the nightlife with pubs and clubs along the seaside is well appreciated.
The city hosts many touristic attraction like: the Charles V Castel, The Gerosolomitano Hospital (1350), the S. Jacob Hospital, Palmieri Palace, the Comunal Biblioteque, the Sant Stephen abbey, the reinassance city walls.
Among the churces it worth a visit the Cathedral which is a Baroque architecture, the S. Maria Amalfitana Basilica, a rare piece of Romanic architecture, the SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo church with its paleocristian architecture.
We would suggest also a visit of the near towns like Polignano a Mare (the Mr. Volare city) with its high cliffs overlooking the sea, Castellana Grotte with the famous caves and Alberobello, the Unesco city. Among art and history you might also have a visit to the Fasano’s Zoosafari which can be the best choice for childrens and adults…

We had a wonderful stay in Maria's apartment. It is perfectly placed in the old town a few minutes walk to the beach and 2 minutes from restaurants, bars and the old town. It is a charming place, in a lovely old stone building, with air con which was great as it was very hot. The bikes were great as we could cycle down the coast and there were umbrellas too useful in the 35'c sun. Pino showed us around the town on arrival which was very kind and they checked we were happy half way through. A very comfortable apartment for 2 or 3 adults in a beautiful part of Italy!
This small appartment is in the middle of the old town and in walking distance of the square were you can sit, drink and eat. It has everything you need. Including airco. The beds are good, the bathroom is very small but with washing machine. The kitchen is also small with two cooking plates but this is enough with all the small restaurants in the neighbourhood. Pino, the letter, made us feel very welcome and even showed us the city by car. He gave tips were to go and we could use the bycicles, beach chairs and umbrellas. And he has a special card for the car parking and that is very welcome because it is difficult to find a parking place. The communication is in Italian but thanks to google translate you can manage fine. We ate the best icecream at caffe roma at largo vescovado by the way, the gelato al tarfuffo is great.
Great apartment in wonderful Monopoli! Marias husband gave us a warm welcome and showed us around in the old city. The apartment is central and 5 minutes from the nice beaches.
The stay at Marias appartment in Puglia was fantastic. We are made very welcome, we were kindly picked up at Monopoli train station by someone who I think was a local celebrity. We are dropped of at the apartment where we were greated by Maria. After showing us around the apartment she took us on a tour of the town, she even helped us choose somewhere for lunch. She asked the the waitress to serve us a speciality dish of sea food.
Monopoli was a great place to stay and is also very good location to catch trains to other areas in Puglia. We recommend going to Polignano a Mare and Lecce. Make full use the the bikes the Maria may kindly offer, there are many great beaches traveling south. The longer you stay in Monopoli. The more you love it.
Maria and her husband were there to pick us up and take luggage. He took us out for a quick and fantastic gelato at his favorite gelateria. fantastic reception.
