Monopoli is the southern port of the Bari area. After the destruction of Egnathia, an ancient city of Messapi in strong connection with the greeks, its inhabitants fled to Monopoli, from which it derives its name as only (monos) city (polis). For centuries it has been one of the most important harbor in Apulia, even though for its strategic position was usually attacked by Barbary corsairs.
Since the XI century it hosts the bishop's diocese, and in the XV century it came under the Venetian control becoming one of the most important seaports on the Adriatic Sea as a base between Bari and Brindisi. The city saw also the Spanish domination: in this period the Aragonese transformed radically the historical center building a castel and improving the defensive system as you can see even nowadays.
Monopoli is today one of the most appreciated touristic destination because of its history and the beauty of the coast: a constellation of tiny creeks and sandy beaches. Also the nightlife with pubs and clubs along the seaside is well appreciated.
The city hosts many touristic attraction like: the Charles V Castel, The Gerosolomitano Hospital (1350), the S. Jacob Hospital, Palmieri Palace, the Comunal Biblioteque, the Sant Stephen abbey, the reinassance city walls.
Among the churces it worth a visit the Cathedral which is a Baroque architecture, the S. Maria Amalfitana Basilica, a rare piece of Romanic architecture, the SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo church with its paleocristian architecture.
We would suggest also a visit of the near towns like Polignano a Mare (the Mr. Volare city) with its high cliffs overlooking the sea, Castellana Grotte with the famous caves and Alberobello, the Unesco city. Among art and history you might also have a visit to the Fasano’s Zoosafari which can be the best choice for childrens and adults…
Touristic attractions in the area
In a range of 20-30 km you can visit the most famous places in Puglia:
* zoo-Safari Fasano
* Trulli di Alberobello
* archeological site of Egnazia
* Castellana’s caves
* Itria Valley
* * Ostuni, the white city
* Conversano with its romanic cathedral, the baroque cloister and the medieval castel
* Polignano a mare
It was the second time I visited Monopoli and stayed at this apartment again. Maria is one of the best hosts I have ever met, even take me by his car from Bari when it was all day strike with no trains or buses! I am sure I'll be back to visit this lovely part of this lovely town. And 100% I'll stay in this flat! Grazie!
We had an excellent time in Monopoly, travelling with a 6 months old baby. A totally random choice it turned out to be the highlight of our trip down the Adriatic coast of Italy. The apartment was really well located, in the old centre of Monopoly in an ancient, but very tidy building. Within walking distance were numerous good restaurants, bakeries, markets and beaches. The old centre is really beautiful and inviting. The host was great, showed us a around town and all, and the apartment was excellent, clean and comfortable.
Confortable, clean and tasteful appartment in a 800 years old building in the heart of the historical center of the Puglian jewel Monopoli, only few minutes walk from the old harbour, the main square, wonderful trattorias, osterias, pizzerias, restaurants, small shops and a small touristagency owned by a young local girl who arranges wonderful bikingtours to rocky churches and masserias in the pitoresque area. The very very kind, warm, open, helpful and informing owners (they picked us up at the trainstation) had bikes to our disposition and we went on them to the beaches (there are more than 20) south of Monopoli. Hope to come back!
We had a great time it Maria's appartment. It's location; close to the beach, bars, restaurants and the city's highlights is just marvellous! The appartment is not too big, but big enough for two adults, and clean! I would stay here again without doubt!
The flat is small but very nice, located in the middle of the fantastic old town. We haven't met the owner but her neighbour, who was very helpful. Maria replied very quickly. We enjoyed the flat and the town very much! Thanks!
Maria has probably the most authentic and atmospheric apartment I've ever stayed in. Located in the heart of a lovely coastal town of Monopoli, in a medieval house amidst narrow serpentine streets, 2 minutes from the sea and 5 minutes from the beach, this apartment is close to the many highlights the town has to offer. And even if you get tired of the outside, you can always go back in to enjoy the minimalist and tasteful interior and have a chat with the locals across the street.
Maria
We went with our two boys and we are very satisfied with the stay in the apartment of Maria and Giuseppe Monopoli. Giuseppe picked us from the station, we are very grateful for that. He showed us places which we had to see in the city. Apartment was clean and well maintained fully furnished in the heart of the old city. Close to downtown, restaurants, shopping and beaches.
We recommend this place for our friends.
Grazie Maria and Gisueppe
We had an amazing time!
Our hosts, Maria & Pino were very friendly, energetic & relaxed. They gave us a lot of tips & hints about food, places and activities that made our stay amazing.They made sure we had a wonderful gastronomic experience also.
The apartment was very nice, very clean and in a good location. It's nice to stay in such an old building right in the heart of the historic center. And so near to the main square where all the activity, life, happens. We had wonderful bike rides trough the city and very nice stroll even when the city slept in the night. The food was very good. You must try the burrata cheese and best pizza you'll ever eat in the Garibaldi square. Pino & Maria will help you with that.
There are a lot of beaches. With or without sand. Fine sand, hard sand, small rocks, big rocks, jumping cliffs...whatever suites you.
Monopoli is also close to other interesting places like Castellana, where you an see the caves or Alberobello with its odd rooftops.
We will definitely go back!
