Monopoli is the southern port of the Bari area. After the destruction of Egnathia, an ancient city of Messapi in strong connection with the greeks, its inhabitants fled to Monopoli, from which it derives its name as only (monos) city (polis). For centuries it has been one of the most important harbor in Apulia, even though for its strategic position was usually attacked by Barbary corsairs.
Since the XI century it hosts the bishop's diocese, and in the XV century it came under the Venetian control becoming one of the most important seaports on the Adriatic Sea as a base between Bari and Brindisi. The city saw also the Spanish domination: in this period the Aragonese transformed radically the historical center building a castel and improving the defensive system as you can see even nowadays.
Monopoli is today one of the most appreciated touristic destination because of its history and the beauty of the coast: a constellation of tiny creeks and sandy beaches. Also the nightlife with pubs and clubs along the seaside is well appreciated.
The city hosts many touristic attraction like: the Charles V Castel, The Gerosolomitano Hospital (1350), the S. Jacob Hospital, Palmieri Palace, the Comunal Biblioteque, the Sant Stephen abbey, the reinassance city walls.
Among the churces it worth a visit the Cathedral which is a Baroque architecture, the S. Maria Amalfitana Basilica, a rare piece of Romanic architecture, the SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo church with its paleocristian architecture.
We would suggest also a visit of the near towns like Polignano a Mare (the Mr. Volare city) with its high cliffs overlooking the sea, Castellana Grotte with the famous caves and Alberobello, the Unesco city. Among art and history you might also have a visit to the Fasano’s Zoosafari which can be the best choice for childrens and adults…

The apartment was beautifully decorated and clean. Enjoyed the simple decorations for the holiday season.
We made dinner one evening and the accommodations were fine in the kitchen. The entry and foyer were warm and inviting. We were fortunate to have an Italian speaking daughter so Maria communicated everything with her. Love the multiply floors. Bikes we could have ridden and would have loved to but the 2-4 inches of snow prevented that adventure. First trip to Italy but loved the location and the setting. Narrow roads, tall buildings, interesting doors and shutters. Well marked apt. numbers and street signs. Restaurant just around down the street was excellent. Coffee bar, pharmacy, bakery and all you need within 4-6 blocks. Port close by to look at boats.

Staying at Maria's place was very pleasant, apartment was just big enough for our family. The hosts were very helpful with lots of tips. We got a unique experience about living in the historical center of an old Italian city.
Maria and Josef erre very helpful for the trip planning and meeting in Monopoli. The apartmentis nice and is very well located in a quiet street. Just a few minutes away from great restaurants and one very good ice cream place called cafe Roma.
My daughter, my mother and I have spent two weeks at Maria`s and Pino`s apartment. The apartment is comfortable, clean and cozy. Apartment is situated in old building and has really good location in the middle of Monopoli Old town. Everything is at your fingertips. Maria and Pino are very kind and helpful, Pino picked us up at the train station. Thanks Pino for information about Monopoli town and good advises about restaurants, bakeries, markets, beaches and Wi-Fi spots. We had a perfect rest. We hope to meet Maria and Pino next year again!
My other half and I spent three magic days at Maria and Pino's. The flat is cozy, spotlessly clean, nothing missing, located in the heart of Monopoli's amazing old town: anything you may need is at no more than 5 minute walk. We haven't heard from the hosts during the three days but they offered to help should the need be felt. Pino is very passionate about local attractions and gave us very good tips about what is unmissable in the area, good restaurants, wi-fi spots and more.
All in all a five star experience, absolutely recommended.
