Kristina was a great host, the place was clean and close to Commercial Drive, a really fun and cool neighborhood. We appreciated the clean linens and towels she left for us. A nice touch was the music playing when we came into the suite. The skytrain is just a walk away and there were so many restaurants and cafes to eat at. This was our first Airbnb stay and it was comfortable and relaxing. We would totally stay here again.
I was in Vancouver for a business conference, and I stayed there for 5 days. The house is really comfortable, super-clean, easy to get and closed to a street (i.e. "the drive") full of restaurants, shops, and all what a guest like me needed. Kristina was really supportive, and she made my staying very productive and easy. Overall, a solution which I found much better than many standard hotels.
We really enjoyed our stay at Kristina's - close to the drive which has lots of restaurants and shops and shows a different, interesting side of Vancouver away from the shiny tall buildings of downtown. Cozy apartment, well equipped and good communication with Kristina - a great stay.
There are so many things that we found wrong with this place. The photos are very misleading. I am shocked that this accommodation has received 40 positive reviews. I have stayed at a handful of Air B&Bs (Montreal, Tofino, Salt Spring) and this was the worst one by far.
What was nice/ good:
1.Several big windows that opened wide.
(website hidden) had been swept, the kitchen was clean, as was the bathroom
3.New linens on the beds, newer white towels
6.Close to parks, Trout Lake Farmers Market, and to Comm D
What was *not* nice :
1.The carpet in was very stained. The owners laid rectangular pieces of cut carpet in certain areas (around the couch) to cover stains. There was also a piece of cut carpet over a transition from the living room to the kitchen which was not secured in any way. Beyond looking very budget, I also tripped over it a dozen times before finally moving it (only to look at the unfinished floor below).
2.One bedroom had NO DOORKNOB. Just a hole in the door. The door also didn’t even come close to closing.
3.The bathroom sink leaked into the cabinet below, making the toilet paper soggy and wet.
4.I found almost a dozen very large spiders (10 to be exact) in the apartment. There were spider webs everywhere – the bathroom light fixture was completely surrounded by one (and a huge spider); the outlet under the kitchen cab was covered in one (unfortunately discovered when I plugged something in); behind the doors; etc. The apartment clearly has not been well cleaned in months. Webs like that don’t form in days or even weeks.
5.There were also moths everywhere. In the first 2 hours there, I squished 5. Then I squished 1-2 a day for the next 4 days. They were indian meal moths which can inadvertently go home with you and which will infest your things. So unacceptable.
6.There was junk piled at our entrance. A workout machine with a stool and a bucket piled on top of it; a broken table; etc.
7.Broken outlet cover plate.
8.Very scuffed up walls that need repainting.
9.Dirty, dusty moulding and window ledges. Clearly little attention to cleaning in the past long while. The place felt GRIMY, even if it had been swept and the kitchen sink cleaned and shined.
10.The noise from upstairs was really loud. They weren’t doing anything like having a party or moving furniture, but the everyday noises in this house are very amplified and loud enough to wake me and my 3.5 year old.
11.Beds were super uncomfortable and clearly either old or very cheap.
(website hidden) was very bare bones. I have not yet been in a Air B&B (or hotel with kitchen for that matter) so basic in kitchen supplies.
Thanks for the positive insights to my suite Richard, that it is bright, has new linens and towels, close to parks, Trout Lake, sorry you didn't find Commercial Drive *nice* it is not as yet gentrified as most areas in Van but unfortunately will get there soon.
As for the negative ones, the list is long but thankfully unique to your stay. I take great pride in ensuring cleanliness and comfort and would have been very amiable to your concerns if you had let me know during your stay. To try and set your mind at ease that you did not stay in a grimy place - I have the stove and fridge pulled out and floors washed behind them every second guest, the carpets are steamed at the end of each season and the swatches of carpet at the couch may be a bit less clean then the spotlessness of the carpet under them (ppl like to snack and watch TV and the swatches are there to protect the full carpet) - oh all the windows are new as of June 10th 2015, so they really have no had much chance to get as dirty as you thought they were. I use the finger across the surface test when in doubt. As for the kitchen being bare bones - there is every thing you need to make lovely meals, new pots and pans as of the spring, coffee maker (with filters) , kettle, toaster, microwave, teapot, basic spices, dish cloths/teatowels, dish soap, dish rack, laundry facilities (soap included), Britta water filter - maybe you missed a dishwasher as there is none...but that is stated in the listing.
Bugs - yes they are seasonally more of a nuisance than at other times, the moths have been more present than usual this year but the hot weather seems to have killed them off for now.
Next time you are this dissatisfied with an Airbnb rental you have booked PLEASE let the host know as they (as I) would be more than happy to address your issues and do our best to rectify them. Ensuring my guests have a great stay in Vancouver is truly top of mind for me.
The location was perfect and the suite was exactly as described. The neighborhood is very quiet and residential, yet close to everything. Commercial Drive with all that neighborhood has to offer - groceries, restaurants, coffee shops, transit and more is only a short walk away. Kristina was responsive and very helpful during our stay - providing a fan to help beat the unusual heat and additional towels. Access from the alley made loading and unloading the car very easy - great for oder guests. The kitchen was complete with everything you need for a cozy evening in. I loved the flowers on the windowsill. Our stay was enjoyable and exactly what we wanted.
Kristina was very welcoming and very prompt responding to inquires and questions we had about the booking. Her home was very comfy and clean, and in a GREAT location near the Drive and the skytrain. I stayed here for almost a week with my family and we loved having this place to come back to every night. Highly recommended!
This basement apartment was clean and had a medium size and small bedroom that worked out great for our stay. Nice living room, but TV was not hooked up. Close to restaurants, but quiet at night. Easy to drive into downtown for sightseeing. Nice public park blocks away.
