Interaction with Guests
The host lives in the property and is always ready to help you feel good at home, and find your way around the city.
Leme neighborhood, in Copacabana, is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Rio, a very quiet quarter at the very end of Avenida Atlantica.
Just behind Leme, on the hillside with the same name (Morro do Leme), we find the twin favelas of Chapéu Mangueira and Babilonia.
That is where we are!
The twin communities are widely recognized as some of the most beautiful and peaceful in Rio. They are quite small, with only about 7000 people in total, and surrounded by an environmentally protected area at the top of the hill.
These communities where some of the first in Rio to be "pacyfied" (receive a UPP Station -Pacifying Police Units), in 2009, and has been safe from any violent incidents since.
Built on a lush green hillside just 200 yards from the beach, offering amazing views and a quiet environment, they have been an attraction for tourists and foreign press for many years.
The recent hype around Rio`s favelas has brought new life to Babilonia and Chapéu Mangueira, with many foreign tourists and expats discovering it`s charms, in new hostels and business opening by the week.
Within the community, you can find some very nice options for inexpensive restaurants and even pizza delivery.
Restaurants, banks, pharmacies, supermarkets, and other services are abundant in Leme neighborhood, just down the stairs.
Come to Leme neighborhood in Copacabana and take the Ladeira Ary Barroso up to the entrance of the Chapéu Mangueira community.
You can walk, take a taxi or a moto taxi to that point.
The best referece is the famous Bar do David, which is right at the entrance and will be our meeting point.
From there it`s just a short walk to the house.
There is a set of stairs just in front of the house that leads you through the favela onto the main street (Rua Gustavo Sampaio, in front of n.155) in just a couple of minutes.
- In Avenida Atlantica there are Bus connections to Copacabana, Ipanema, Maracana, Botafogo, Centro, etc.
- In Avenida Princesa Isabel (5 min walk) there are many bus connections to all parts of town.
- Taxis and mototaxis available 24 hours in Rua Gustavo Sampaio (Leme)
- Nearest Metro Station is Cardeal Arcoverde (15 min walk)

Joao is a perfect host to spend some days with in Rio.
The Apartement is amazing, the view really nice, the location close to the beach. Joao helped us out with everything and we could always ask him.
We also could stay one night longer spontanously, that helped us a lot.
Thanks so much Joao! :-)

My boyfriend and I stayed with Joao at the Guesthouse during the World Cup. Joao was a great host! He helped us navigate from the airport to his place, gave us recommendations, and was always willing to help in any way possible! The community is wonderful! Our first night there Joao invited us to a party where we met other locals and travelers staying in the area!
The room was what we expected. Private, plenty of room for us to make ourselves feel comfortable and unpack a little (dresser, hangers, etc.).
The Guesthouse is up a steep hill, so beware, if you don't like walking stairs or have lots of luggage, this might be an issue.
There is a staircase leading almost directly to Leme beach area which is really nice! The area was nicely decorated for the World Cup with the stairs, walls, etc. painted green and yellow!
We felt completely safe walking around the area and in Rio. And, we enjoyed stayed the experience and stay at Joao's Guesthouse!
We enjoyed the views and the area we stayed in. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.
Joao was a great host. He met us at a better-known location near the hostel and helped us walk our things over from there. He was readily available when needed, along with the two other great people helping out at the hostel. The hostel is in a favela which is totally safe. There are police stationed there regularly and all the other residents are very friendly. It's a great experience seeing a favela from that side as well. It's also just a 10 min walk to Leme/Copacabana beach!
The only thing I would warn about are the 200 steps up to the hostel from the beach. This was not a problem for us at all, but could be for some. There are taxis that could take you closer as well if that is a concern. Overall, I would definitely recommend this hostel and would stay again!

Hi, my name is João.
I come from Portugal and have been living in Brazil for 3 years.
Since 2013 i have been hosting foreign tourists and students in this 6 bedroom Guesthouse, located in a small favela called Chapéu Mangueira, in Leme (Copacabana).
Here you can find affordable accommodation, in comfort and safety, and also have a fantastic insight into one of the most fascinating favelas of Rio de Janeiro, with it`s lively atmosphere and amazing views.
Chapéu Mangueira is a small community, the smallest favela in Rio`s Zona Sul, with only around 3000 people.
The atmosphere is really friendly, a small village feel, where most people know each other and help out their neighbors.
I have fallen in love with the community, as have many tourists and others who decided to stay for a while.
The house has a superb location, with fantastic views over the ocean and Copacabana, and very close to all the facilities of Leme neighborhood and the beach.
It has been a great experience to host people from all over the world, different cultures, languages, sharing experiences in Rio and within the community.
I feel privileged to have the opportunity to share all the great things about the favela lifestyle and culture. and to make my guests feel at home in the community.
I am also more than happy to help my guests get around town and enjoy a magnificent time in Rio, and hopefully learn a little bit of portuguese in the process.
See you soon in Rio!
