Welcome to our home away from home. Pool, lounge chairs, picnic table outside and lots of space inside for you. Fresh flowers and a treat will greet you as we try to make your stay an experience - not just a hotel.

The Space

Melanie is an avid gardener who loves cooking, travel (France, N. Africa, W. Africa, Australia, etc.) and the house reflects all of that. She does wilt from gardening in heat over 100 degrees, however.

One bedroom plus an outdoor twin bed. The large INTERNATIONAL room, has a couch, full size medium-soft bed, and a large desk work space. It is large enough for a yoga workout. It is a short distance down the hall from the bathroom. The carpet is clean, but two boys grew up there. It is directly across from the hosts' room, but buffered by a bedroom closet and linen closet. The bathroom is just down the hall a few steps; since a daughter has moved home, she has some items in there, but the bathroom will be yours during your stay.
There is also a firm twin bed on the porch for those warmer summer nights. Near the newly resurfaced pool, a gas bbq and picnic table are available. There is no t.v. in the bedroom, however there is one in the living room. Although we don't have cable, we have local channels and Netflix and can provide you with an internet access code.

NOTE: There is one indoor/outdoor cat, one outdoor dog and one indoor small dog for those with any allergies. We are also chicken (not rooster!) owners - Lucy and Shoshanna . They are in a small coop in the back yard. They provide us with organic eggs daily. The gardener comes Friday mornings about 7 so there will be some noise for about 1/2 hour.

Your hosts are a working couple, except during school holidays when one will be cooking and working in the yard. Ron makes great moist scrambled eggs, usually with spicy sausage and avocado. Melanie makes sweet breads and quiches. Organic produce is delivered on a weekly basis and usually an abundance is in the frig. We would be glad to share a meal with you if you'd like. There will certainly be coffee in the morning, use of the microwave or teapot, and toiletries if you forget something.

In the backyard, there is a small refrigerator, gas bbq, pool/towels and lounge chairs for your use. In front there is a quaint bistro set where wine and cheese can be enjoyed. Wireless internet is available.

The neighborhood is quiet, but near freeway 41 onramp where you can easily get on 99 south. 99 north is a straight drive down Herndon avenue a few miles. (Fresno is half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco). If Melanie's schedule allows, dropping you off at the train or bus station downtown would be a pleasure. Two bikes and a lock are available to explore the neighborhood, nearby Fig Garden Village shopping center with some good restaurants and many shops (Whole Foods, French bakery, the Elbow Room w/ music some nights, the Pottery Barn...all in attractive store fronts and surrounded by nice landscaping). Yosemite is less than 2 hours away. Many hikes w/in driving distance. Ron has hiked all over Yosemite and rock climbed there -- plenty of advice and hiking books to loan you for the day. We also have a cooler and picnic basket for you to take on your adventures.

Melanie and Ron have stayed at several AirBnBs and Melanie used to be a couch surfer host. Her favorite new book is on how to run a bed and breakfast of your own :). She has also housed exchange students. She speaks French (fluently) and Spanish (enough to get by) and would love meeting international travelers. We look forward to meeting you!

UPON BOOKING, please let me know if you'll want coffee in the morning (black, sugar, cream/milk) or tea and if you have any food allergies/preferences (gluten, no egg, no milk products,, etc. no pork, hate avocado, etc.).

Guest Access

Guests have access: to hall bathroom (some of my daughter's affairs are in there also);some refrigerator space (please let me know if you'll need space so I can accommodate you); living room and dining room; outside living spaces including lounge chairs, bbq, chiminea, and pool; and their bedroom. Prefer guests not to use kitchen.

Interaction with Guests

We love visiting w/ guests, but will respect your privacy also. We've dined w/ several guests or shared breakfast together. It's really up to you:)

The Neighborhood

It's a nice neighborhood to take walks in and a walkable distance to Starbucks, restaurants and quaint shops in Fig Garden Village.

Getting around

There are bus routes nearby, but Fresno isn't known for its public transportation :(

Other Things to Note

Smoke detectors and CO2 are installed and working. There is also a fire extinguisher in the room for your safety.

  • This was my first time ever staying in a family's home. I usually stay in a hotel, but wanted to get a feel for the city. The experience was so much better than expected. The room is quite large, 15x20 (?) and we stayed cool in the 107 degree heatwave with the AC and ceiling fan. The room was so comfortable that we spent most of our time there. We were in town to look for housing, so most of the visit was spent scouring ads, emailing and visiting rentals. The free wifi, with a good connection, was a blessing and aided in our search. Melanie made a wonderful breakfast each morning with eggs from her hens and homemade jam. The home is in a safe, lovely neighborhood with restaurants and a Whole Foods just a few blocks away. We went to Yosemite one day and Melanie gave me some helpful tips on visiting the park.
The family has a very friendly little dog, Charlie, that will hop on the bed and hang out with you. Not a yappy dog, just a cute little creature that is full of joy. Parking is on the street directly in front of the house.
I would definitely recommend this home for a place to stay.

Thank you for the suggestion, Valerie. I hope you found a good place for your son to rent :) We'd be happy to host you again if you head this way to visit him.

  • So, I was talking to a friend of mine who shared this idea that airbnb is a hit or miss. Basically the places span across the spectrum of awesome to stinky. Comparing that to a cheap motel, you know what you are in for and things are kinda boring.

In comes this place. It lies on the extreme of the spectrum (the awesome end). The most awesome people living in a great space, making great conversations and even better breakfasts.

    We stayed 3 days at the place and it always gave us the feeling of home. Eating breakfast while their dog charlie is running around playing is a good start of the day before we had to head out to do our thing. Melanie and Ron is an active couple who start their day early and stay up late and had plenty of stories to share with (website hidden):DR;
    1. Awesome people with interesting stories
    2. Beautiful place
    3. Incredible breakfast and morning conversations.

Awww, Abhishek, I'm glad we were a "hit" and not a "miss" for you and Sonal. When I first started reading your comment, I got a little nervous :) We thoroughly enjoyed hosting you. You are a lovely young couple with much happy memory making ahead of you. Be sure to take Sonal to Big Sur soon!!! Enjoy your every other weekend travels with your new wife. Update me on how her cooking progresses! We are having Indian food tonight! :) All our best, Melanie

  • Staying at Melanie's place was great. We didn't get to spend that much time there since we got late at night and left next day early morning. We felt really welcomed and they were sure that we didn't leave without breakfast. Will definitely stay there again.

  • It was a pleasure staying with Melanie and Ron. Although I managed to scare Melanie to death *g* we received a very warm welcome. The whole house is great - spacious and clean, with backyard, pool, chicken ... amazing!

I had a cold IPA with Ron, chatting about his crazy rock climbing ascents amongst other things. Melanie prepared a great quiche for our breakfast and told us great places we could check out along our way. And it's impossible to get rid of that cute little dog - he follows you everywhere and wants to snuggle all the time. You will miss him, trust me! :)

To sum it up: great experience - highly recommended!

All the best to you guys!

  • Beats any hotel in Fresno! Melanie and her family were nothing but accommodating and generous. I booked the room only a few hours before and came in late in the night. Melanie was super friendly and stayed up late to welcome me in. Breakfast was fantastic and prepared me for a big day ahead in Yosemite, which her husband gave me some excellent tips for. Room was clean and perfect for anyone traveling long or short term. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone and will definitely book again if I'm ever in the area :)

  • Our stay with Melanie and her family was nothing shy of fantastic. Her home was warm, charming and simply outstanding. It was so inviting and cozy we loved the aura making us feel like it was a home away from home.

Her breakfast are those of delicious fine cuisine. Our favorites included her homemade pastries and tasty quiche.

We look forward to our next stay when visiting Fresno.

If you stay anywhere else, it's your loss. Thanks again Melanie. Ron and Lauren. Be well and Merry Christmas!!

Fresno, CA -- rock climb (sorta), gardening, COOKING, collecting pottery, thrift store shopping, WINE, hiking, IPA beers (Ron only), biking. We like good clean fun...followed by wine and cheese and baguettes. Ron taught me and my 26 year old son to rock-climb - scarey sport. He loves beer, but swings both ways (I love now we have 4 cases of wine in a new wine frig from our recent visit to Amador County)
