About this listing
The international room represents our family and love of travel -- memories from Australia to France decorate the room. We are close to Sequoia National Park and Yosemite...and only 2.5 hours from Morro Bay. We love our outdoor space.
The large INTERNATIONAL room has a couch, 2 sitting chairs, king size bed, and a drop-down secretary desk work space. Décor is from all over the world -- will share stories if you want. There are built-in dresser drawers to use for longer stays and some closet space (it's our "sports" closet too). The carpet in the international room is clean, but two boys grew up there. Guest room is directly across from the hosts' room, but buffered by a bedroom closet and linen closet. Guest room is a short distance down the hall from the newly remodeled bathroom. Our grown daughter has her affairs in the bathroom and may need to grab something, but otherwise it should be all yours.
Near the newly resurfaced pool, a gas bbq and picnic table are available. There is no t.v. in the bedroom, however there is one in the living room and wifi access. Although we don't have cable, we have local channels and Netflix and can provide you with an internet access code.
NOTE: There is one indoor small dog for those with any allergies. We are also chicken (not rooster!) owners - Flan, Lucy Too and Shoshanna . They are in a small coop in the back yard. They provide us with organic eggs daily. The gardener comes Friday mornings about 7 so there will be some noise for about 1/2 hour. And Ron leaves at 6 a.m. - for those sensitive to any noise at all.
Melanie is an avid gardener who loves cooking, travel (France, N. Africa, W. Africa, Australia, etc.) and the house reflects all of that. She does wilt from gardening in heat over 100 degrees, however. Our response to the California drought has the garden/lawn suffering some. We were superhosts before suspending our listing to remodel the bathroom and paint. We expect to gain back our rating soon!
Your hosts are a working couple, except during school holidays when one will be cooking and working in the yard. Ron makes great moist scrambled eggs, usually with spicy sausage and avocado. Melanie makes sweet breads and frittatas. Organic produce is delivered on a weekly basis and usually an abundance is in the frig. Plus we grow our own plums and berries and make homemade jam. We would be glad to share a meal with you if you'd like. There will certainly be coffee in the morning, use of the microwave or teapot, and toiletries if you forget something.
In the backyard, there is a small refrigerator, gas bbq, pool/towels and lounge chairs for your use. There are several outdoor spaces where wine and cheese can be enjoyed. Wireless internet is available.
The neighborhood is quiet, but near freeway 41 onramp where you can easily get on 99 south. 99 north is a straight drive down Herndon avenue a few miles. (Fresno is half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco). If Melanie's schedule allows, dropping you off at the train or bus station downtown would be a pleasure. Two bikes and a lock are available to explore the neighborhood, nearby Fig Garden Village shopping center with some good restaurants and many shops (Whole Foods, French bakery, the Elbow Room w/ music some nights, the Pottery Barn...all in attractive store fronts and surrounded by nice landscaping). Yosemite is less than 2 hours away. Many hikes w/in driving distance. Ron has hiked all over Yosemite and rock climbed there -- plenty of advice and hiking books to loan you for the day. And he is an avid soccer player. We also have a cooler and picnic basket for you to take on your adventures. There are some great wineries nearby too. We love Fresno and can recommend things to do here locally - Gazebo Garden's music and food trucks on Friday/Saturday, a walk at Woodward Park, Good Company Players plays, Tower Theatre movies, farmers markets, etc.
Melanie and Ron have stayed at several AirBnBs and Melanie used to be a couch surfer host. Her favorite new book is on how to run a bed and breakfast of your own :). She has also housed exchange students. She speaks French (fluently) and Spanish (enough to get by) and would love meeting international travelers. We look forward to meeting you!
UPON BOOKING, please let me know if you'll want coffee in the morning (black, sugar, cream/milk) or tea and if you have any food allergies/preferences (gluten, no egg, no milk products, etc. no pork, hate avocado, etc.).
Guests have access: to hall bathroom (leftover daughter's affairs are in there also); some refrigerator space (please let me know if you'll need space so I can accommodate you); living room and dining room; outside living spaces including lounge chairs, bbq, chiminea, and pool; and the international bedroom. Prefer guests not to use kitchen, but we can usually accomodate some light cooking.
We love visiting w/ guests, but will respect your privacy also. We've dined w/ several guests or shared breakfast together. It's really up to you:)
Smoke detectors and CO2 are installed and working. There is also a fire extinguisher in the room for your safety.
The guest bedroom with sofa, sitting chairs, desk and king bed will be all yours. The bathroom a few feet down the hall will have some of my grown daughter's affairs in it that she may need to access. Outside sitting area and breakfast area are yours to enjoy as well. In winter, you are welcome to join us at the fireplace in the living room.
Interaction with Guests
Depending on the dates of your stay, one or both of us will be here. We would be glad to interact with as much as you would like and of course, we are happy to help you with things to do and travel logistics.
In a quiet well-established neighborhood, but close to freeway 41 exit. Lovely walkable shopping center nearby w/ food, wine tasting, pharmacy, etc. -- just a nice place to visit period whether you're buying or not. Good area for a neighborhood bike ride (we'll provide bikes). High school nearby if you want to play tennis or run the track in the evenings. Close to groceries for packing your picnic for a national park.
It's a nice neighborhood to take walks in and a walkable distance to Starbucks, restaurants and quaint shops in Fig Garden Village.
There are bus routes nearby, but Fresno isn't known for its public transportation :(
The train/central bus station is downtown. I may be able to give you a ride depending on my schedule. Uber is up and running here, as well as taxis.
Other Things to Note
A gardener comes at 7 a.m. on Fridays and is here about half an hour. Ron is an early riser and leaves early for work. He's quiet, but you will hear a door open/close.
Please no smoking inside or near a door/window of the house. Use coasters on any wood surfaces. Please limit food in the bedroom; there are several outside and inside eating areas. When using the shower please turn on the fan switch located near the medicine chest. Please wipe down glass in shower with the yellow microfiber cloth provided. In response to the drought, please be conscientious of your water use. If you ask to use the stove or bbq, be careful not to set any hot items on the kitchen counter top. No one except those who booked the stay may be in the house -- unless granted specific permission. No drugs or excessive alcohol. Always lock the door when you leave (whether you are returning or not). Be very careful not to let Charlie out when coming in or going out; he will run -- even though he says he sorry when he does. Take care of the home like it's your own.
