Everything about the place was truly excellent and it was the best vacation experience I've had. This was my first time using airbnb, and my first time renting out someone's home on vacation, and it was an excellent first impression. Simply put, in both value and quality, I would highly recommend staying here over a hotel if you're thinking about a visit to the Big Island with any more than a couple people.
My Wife and I stayed here for ten days with both of our parents visiting, mine from the mainland and my Wife's from Beijing - and it couldn't have been a better family get-together.
We arrived to a small welcome basket of local treats on the counter at the beginning of our first of ten days. Everything was in very good condition, and the house is really quite beautiful and spacious with all the amenities you would need for any vacation. Everything that you see on the listing came exactly as advertised - from the BBQ and some extra swimming gear, to easily accessible wi-fi and a fully stocked kitchen. The home is just three blocks walk away from the main swimming pool of the Kapoho tide pools, and a short block and a half away from the rocky coast down a small fisherman's path. Swimming at the tide pools was one of the nicest experiences of our stay, and my parents made it a point to go out swimming there almost every morning. The tide pools are nicely protected and there are just so many beautiful fish swimming just beneath you, definitely a big highlight to this place. Even on the weekend, the tide pools were never crowded with only maybe eight to ten families there at the peak hours.
If you really need a beach you just need to drive 10-15 minutes south along the 137 to some of the island's famous black sand beaches. Go all the way down the 137 to the junction with the 130 and there's Uncle Robert's farmer's market and a black sand beach nearby and some good food. The actual market was Wed and Sat evening, though even the Wed event was a little busy for our tastes. There are some really wonderful restaurants just 15 minutes away in Pahoa. We tried Kaleo's, Luquin's, Ning Thai, and Mike's New York Pizzeria in town and I was quite happy with everywhere we went.
This is an excellent central location to see everything that's worth seeing on the east side of Big Island - we went north of Hilo to Akaka falls, the Onomea falls and tropical garden (highly recommend this), and the Hamakua forest. It's about as convenient as anywhere worth staying on island for Mauna Kea as well as the Volcanoes National Parks.
Truly excellent, and thanks again to our hosts! Cheers!
The house is truly beautiful. Comfy beds. Bicycles to use. Snorkel gear included for the glorious tide pools which were one of the high points of our trip to the islands.
Hosts were available by phone. Quick to respond. A 20 minute drive to the nearest restaurants, in Pahoa.
Spacious, clean, luxurious. Perfect for our family of six adults.
The house was truly amazing and included all of the necessary amenities and then some. The pictures are definitely an accurate representation of the property, but it's even more impressive in person. The neighborhood was nice and quaint, with the best part being that it was only about a 1/4 mile from the tide pools. The tide pools offered countless hours of entertainment and were really a thing of beauty. We made a few trips into Hilo which is less than an hours drive. The market in Hilo is a must do, with Wednesday and Saturday having the largest selection of vendors. There are no shortage of things to do whether staying locally or venturing out.
I highly recommend staying here if making a trip to the Big Island
The house was just as nice as the pictures made it out to be. The snorkeling in the tide pools was crazy good. We visited not too long after the tropical storms, so there was still quite a bit of debris in the neighborhood and surrounding areas, but the house and lot were in great repair. 10/10 would vacation again.
