About this listing
A large sunny room with amazing mountain views and its own private balcony. Come see why our guests rave about our views, especially at night from our hot tub. Full gourmet breakfast included! Most of our food is locally sourced and organic.
Summer is in full-on sizzle in the San Juans! The snow melt has provided an abundance of wildflowers, and our jeeping and hiking trails are at their peak. The Twin Spruce room (2nd flr.) in this rustic retreat has a private bath and a guest laundry. There's a private balcony with a fantastic 180 view of the Mt. Sneffels Range and Dallas Divide, and you have exclusive use of the living room with its stellar views of the San Juans! Please be aware that we have two listings: The True Grit Rustic Mtn. Retreat-Mexican Queen is our other one.
You are 1/2 mi. to Ridgway State Park offering boating, fishing, swimming, biking and camping. Only 10 mins. to town, 20 mins. to the old mining town of Ouray, and 45 mins. to Telluride Ski Resort. There is abundant hiking, jeeping, horseback riding, snowshoeing and X-country skiing only minutes from your door. Visit the Chamber website at: (website hidden) for more things to do.
Our rustic western town (where the film "True Grit" was made!) offers many dining options, a small grocery, a fine library, antique and retail shops, plus the restored Sherbino Theater offering movies and live musical entertainment. We also have our own liquor distillery/pub, Trail Town Still, and the Colorado Boy Brew Pub, an award-winning brewer. There are two hot springs very close by; one is clothing optional:) Did you know Ridgway is the home of the Grammy Awards? They are hand-crafted right here in town, and you can tour the workshop! Entertainment opportunities are myriad as this is a very artsy-fartsy community.
Whether winter or summer, come to our mountains and let us spoil you!
First flr. living and dining rooms, plus limited kitchen privileges (please see House Rules below). Private bath. We encourage our guests to make full use of our decks and the hot tub in the summer months.
Interaction with Guests
We love to interact with our guests, but always let them set the pace. We are always willing to offer advice on places to dine or visit.
We live in a very quiet neighborhood of lovely homes on 2 1/2 acres each. The 35 acre ranch on our west side has horses and cows, plus several neighbors have horses as well. The only sounds you will hear are the cows lowing & the Mtn. Jays chattering:). There is a 35 acre parcel across our road, which is ideal for x-country skiing or snowshoeing. The views of the mountains are unparalleled from every angle.
No public transport.
Other Things to Note
Not all airbnbs are the same. We include a full gourmet breakfast, so all you have to do is roll out of bed and feast:). Most of our food is organic and locally sourced, including veggies from our own garden.

We stayed with Don & Lysa just this week & could not have had a nicer experience. Would turn around and go back in a blink if I could. Gracious, warm, accommodating, & located in a little slice of heaven!
Lovely home cooked breakfast was a real perk. Ridgway is wonderful as well.
The house and the room was just as described and maybe better. Don and Lysa were really open and easy to talk to. They had lots of great suggestions for things to do. I brought my telescope with me and Don was very kind to let me set up in his backyard - even letting me use his lawnmower to clear an area to set up in. We had several great viewing nights and saw a lot of meteors (Persieds). Breakfasts were excellent and much more elaborate than I had expected. Got a little hot in the afternoon but things cooled off at night and we slept very well. One thing - if you are not a dog person, you may not like their dog who is a large, very friendly Lab. Well behaved but still a big dog who has the run of the house (although he never came upstairs where the rooms are). Personally I liked him a lot. They have lots of birds and a large prairie dog town in the field behind them. The views are just as great as advertised. Ridgview is a neat little town and they are only 10 miles from Ouray which is also fun. Don and Lysa were great hosts and pretty much left you alone to do your own thing unless you wanted help and then they were as helpful as you could want. Very interesting folks to talk to and we also enjoyed the other couples there while we were there. Overall, the week was just great and I can't think of anything that would make it better except for fewer mosquitoes outside (which they could not control). Would gladly go again.
Don and Lysa welcomed us immediately upon our arrival. Their home was lovely and so comfortable. They took care of our every need. We wouldn't hesitate to stay there again if we're ever back in Ridgeway.
Staying at Don and Lysa's was like staying with friends or family. They were warm, welcoming and relaxed. By the time I left I felt like we were old friends! On my first evening, Don, Lysa and the couple who were staying in the other room had an impromptu little "party" in the kitchen over wine and beverages. I enjoyed this so much more than just a boring, lonely hotel room and appreciated the company and the stories and laughter.
My room was very comfortable and the bathroom was elegant and spacious. Lysa was gracious in accommodating my dietary needs at breakfast (no grains, no sugar). Their dog was a sweet, calm lab who likes petting and always greets you with a tail wag. There is a living room for guests with a beautiful view of the Sneffels Range for reading and relaxing. The neighborhood is quiet and surrounded by meadows, cows and horses as well as homes.
This was such a delightful stay! The accommodations are 5 star! Breakfast was FABULOUS! Lysa & Don were warm and helpful and caring. I will be back to enjoy day trips to Telluride and beyond! Perfect choice!
We have stayed in several Air BnB homes, and Don and Lysa's home rates at the very top ! The views, the room with balcony, the common living areas, the breakfast ... and to top it all off ... kind, generous and welcoming hosts.
This was our second trip to True Grit.. we will definitely be making this an annual trip! Lysa and Don are fantastic hosts with great suggestions/ideas for the area. We feel so welcome and comfortable here. The best part is being able to bring our dogs & knowing they are welcome and adored as well :). If you are wanting to stay in the Ridgway/Ouray/Telluride area-- this is where to be!! Can't beat the views, breakfasts, or location. Love it here!!

About the Host, Elizabeth (Lysa) And Don
My husband & I are semi-retired and split our time between two residences. We are very active: skiing, biking, hiking, walking. We love the arts & enjoy the opera and theater in Tampa as well as museums. We are very social people and love to share our homes with new friends. Lysa (Elizabeth) is an adventurous cook, always looking for the next best recipe. Don loves to advise guests on what to see and do. It would be our pleasure to host you in the manner that suits, whether it be personal attentiveness or just letting you kick back and find your own way.
