Description

The space

Although we are now closed for the winter, we reopen in late May. The Twin Spruce room (2nd flr.) in this rustic retreat has a private bath and a guest laundry (one of the baths is on the 1st flr). There's a private balcony with a fantastic 180 view of the Mt. Sneffels Range and Dallas Divide, and you have exclusive use of the living room with its stellar views of the San Juans! Please be aware that we have two listings: The True Grit Mtn. Retreat-Mexican Queen is our other one.

You are 1/2 mi. to Ridgway State Park offering boating, fishing, swimming, biking and camping. Only 10 mins. to town, 20 mins. to the old mining town of Ouray, and 45 mins. to Telluride Ski Resort. There is abundant hiking, jeeping, horseback riding, snowshoeing and X-country skiing only minutes from your door. Visit the Chamber website at: for more things to do.

Our rustic western town (where the film "True Grit" was made!) offers many dining options, a small grocery, a fine library, antique and retail shops, plus the restored Sherbino Theater offering movies and live musical entertainment. We also have our own liquor distillery/pub, Trail Town Still, and the Colorado Boy Brew Pub, an award-winning brewer. There are two hot springs very close by; one is clothing optional:) Did you know Ridgway is the home of the Grammy Awards? They are hand-crafted right here in town, and you can tour the workshop! Entertainment opportunities are myriad as this is a very artsy-fartsy community.

Whether winter or summer, come to our mountains and let us spoil you!

Guest access

First flr. living and dining rooms, plus limited kitchen privileges (please see House Rules below). Private bath (one bath is on the 2nd flr. & the other is on the 1st). We encourage our guests to make full use of our decks and the hot tub in the summer months. We also have an outside screen porch with lots of comfy furniture & great views.

Interaction with guests

We love to interact with our guests, but always let them set the pace. We are always willing to offer advice on places to dine or visit. Our private quarters are located in a separate wing of the house, so the primary interaction is in the kitchen.

The neighborhood

We live in a very quiet neighborhood of lovely homes on 2 1/2 acres each. The 35 acre ranch on our west side has horses and cows, plus several neighbors have horses as well. The only sounds you will hear are the cows lowing & the Mtn. Jays chattering:). The views of the mountains are unparalleled from every angle. Deer are ever present early in the morning or early evening. In the all it isn't uncommon to see elk grazing nearby.

Getting around

No public transport.

Other things to note

Not all airbnbs are the same. We include a continental breakfast, so all you have to do is roll out of bed and feast:). Our baked goods are all home-made, plus we offer fresh seasonal fruit, hard-boiled eggs, cereal, juice & coffee or tea. We try to serve mainly organic food from our local Farmers Market & also from our own garden.

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful home just outside Ridgeway. The host, Don and Lysa were warm and friendly. Lysa even was texting us before our arrival about scenic routes. The area is gorgeous! Don and Lysa did a good job within minutes making us feel at home and giving us suggestions on what to see in the area. Even their dog made us feel welcome! The breakfasts Lysa cooked us were a real treat not often found in an AirBnB. The location was easy to get to yet offered a spectacular open view of the mountains and surrounding area. Definitely would stay here again!

We had a wonderful time during our recent stay. We found the room to be quite comfortable and cozy, and the private balcony has the most amazing view of the mountains. The hosts, Don and Lysa, were extremely welcoming. They truly care about making sure their guests have a lovely experience. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer!

Lysa and Don are the consummate hosts. After a somewhat perilous traverse of the Red Mountain Pass (550) in fog and rain, we arrived late and weary. Lysa greeted us with a hug and a helping of their delicious pot roast dinner. This act of kindness set the tone for the entire stay, with offers of walking trails and advice on the best Hot Springs to visit. The house is very tastefully decorated with Lysa displaying some beautiful examples of Native American art and antique furniture. Each morning we were met with a sumptuous breakfast of fruit and other baked items. Their dog, Tristan is very friendly and will quickly welcome you into the home. It seems what matters to Lysa and Don is that your stay is as enjoyable as can be, that you are well fed, well informed and well rested and that for me is the measure of an outstanding host.

We love catching up with them, eating some great breakfasts, and exploring the area! Til next year!

Lysa and Don made us feel very welcome from the moment we got there. They were both very helpful and always available. Don gave me wonderful advice on where to fish (I caught my limit within 90 minutes, and Lysa's breakfasts were outstanding. One sign of a great cook is- they make it look easy. She made it look easy. After eating "in town", I much preferred Lysa's cooking. Beyond that, they were marvelous hosts in every way.

Elizabeth (Lysa) And Don User ProfileElizabeth (Lysa) And Don is a superhost.

My husband & I are semi-retired and split our time between two residences. We are very active: skiing, biking, hiking, walking. We love the arts & enjoy the opera and theater in Tampa as well as museums. We are very social people and love to share our homes with new friends. Lysa (Elizabeth) is an adventurous cook, always looking for the next best recipe. Don loves to advise guests on what to see and do. It would be our pleasure to host you in the manner that suits, whether it be personal attentiveness or just letting you kick back and find your own way.
